Obit- Davis_BROOKSVILLE – Joel Putnam Davis of Brooksville died on June 9, 2016. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., on Sept. 19, 1926, the third son of Rhea Reineman Davis and Edward Kirk Davis.

His informal education consisted of learning to fish and sail. He received his formal education at Milton Academy and Harvard College, where he met his future wife, Ruth Hiebert, whom he married in 1950. Together they raised four children in Osterville on Cape Cod. By this time, he had graduated from catching scup and sea robins to bluefish and striped bass. It was on Cuttyhunk Island where he discovered stripers abounded, and Cuttyhunk became the family’s summer home.

Joel took over the late 19th-century corporation, Seapuit Inc., which had built one of the earliest nine-hole golf courses in the country. He turned it into a premier land management and property development company.

Public service was important to Joel. He was an emeritus trustee of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, as well as a life trustee of Cape Cod Academy and he also served on the board of the Marine Biological Laboratory. For 50 years he was a trustee of the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations.

In 1992, when Joel and Ruth moved to Horseshoe Cove in Brooksville, he was able to indulge in his love of sailing. Cruising the many small harbors and islands along the Maine coast, learning that humpback whales come to the surface when you play a recording of Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons,” discovering new places and even a few rocks made his summers a delight.

Besides his wife, Ruth, he is survived by his children: Serena Davis Hall, her husband, Brent, and their daughters, Molly and Sarah Hall; Jonathan Davis, his wife, Louise, and his children Justin, Hannah and Caleb, and her children Caitlin and Samantha Forrest; Christopher Davis, his wife, Janet McMahon, and their daughters Josie and Sophie Davis; and Margaret Maiden, her husband, Miles, and their daughters Haley and Hannah Maiden. Karen Brown Davis, mother of Justin, Hannah and Caleb, died in 2010.

He leaves his older brother Holbrook R. Davis of Osterville, Mass., and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to either the Brooksville Free Public Library or the Blue Hill Public Library.

A celebration of his life will be announced at a later date.

Obit- Deyoe_COREA/THE VILLAGES, FLA. – Alice Jean Deyoe (Jean Deyoe), 87, of The Villages, Fla., passed away peacefully Friday, June 10, 2016. She was born in St. Paul, Minn., on May 7, 1929.

Jean graduated from Boston University and received her master’s from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. She worked at Arkansas State College, Briarcliffe College in New York and as a guidance counselor for the Montgomery County District in Maryland, where she retired and then moved to Corea. Aunt Jean was the first president for the Paul Bunyan Road Association of land owners, and was appointed by the governor of Maine to be a member of the task force on improving access to prescription drugs for the elderly, and volunteered for many organizations.

If you ever wanted to know anything that was going on in the world, Aunt Jean knew it. She read everything and watched everything. She was very knowledgeable and opinionated which sometimes rubbed people the wrong way. She knew what she wanted and when she wanted it. She stood up and took charge of herself, and those less fortunate. She loved animals. At some point, I believe she had four dogs and 11 cats all under one roof. She adored them all and took in strays of all kinds.

She had a lifelong partner, Barbara Riley, who predeceased her. In addition to Barbara, she was predeceased by her parents, Caroline and Alan Deyoe, and her sister, Carolyn Bonsall. She is survived by her brothers, Alan M. Deyoe, Jr. and J. David Deyoe. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, and her dear friend George H. Odom and his wife, Claire Gore.

A private family burial was held on Friday, June 17, at the Prospect Harbor Cemetery in Prospect Harbor.

David C. Faltings

Obit- Falting_KETCHUM, IDAHO – David C. Faltings, Super Dave, as he was known to his friends, died of ALS after a three-year struggle on June 9, 2016. He was 52. In many ways, he was the smiling face that greeted people at Silver Creek Outfitters. Dave was everyone’s friend.

Dave was born in Southern California. As a child he lived in St. Louis, Mo., Gaithersburg, Md., Coral Springs, Fla., Diablo, Calif., and Danville, Calif. Collecting and keeping friends along the way.

As a boy, summers were spent in Ellsworth with his paternal grandparents, Mildred and George Faltings. He had a small aluminum boat and was off every morning, disappearing into the Green Lake morning fog with the camp dog, Bourbon. A lifelong love of nature, fishing and disobedient dogs began. He loved his labs, past and present: Riley, Bug and Lily. He loved all living things.

He traveled the world fly fishing: Chile, Russia, Christmas Island, British Columbia and the Seychelles and was always willing to share. He had no secrets. His generosity was genuine and he was always eager to help others by introducing them to a new place to fish, helping them cast or selecting the right fly.

Dave went to Idaho from Danville, Calif., to attend the University of Idaho. There, he earned his degree in finance in 1984. He guided at Silver Creek Outfitters while in college and moved to Ketchum full-time in 1988, along with some of his fraternity brothers: Brett Drummond, Ritchie Thurston, Mark Osmer, John Kendall and Mike Neary.

Steelhead Camp started after college. Dave and a group of friends set up a fall fishing camp at the confluence of the Grande Rhone and Snake Rivers. Wall tents were erected in September and taken down in November. They were there for the season with guests coming and going. Steelhead was Dave’s favorite — his passion.

Dave met his wife, Renee, in the Pioneer Saloon. A mutual friend introduced them, simply saying “She likes to fish.” When Dave’s first question was “What do you like to fish for?” Her reply was, “I really like the strong tug of a steelhead.” The hook was set. Weeks later, Dave announced to the world he was going to marry her. It took a little longer for him to convince her. They married in Stanley, Idaho, on February 15, 2010.

Renee was the perfect bride. As Dave explained, “She has a fishing cabin on the Metolius River, a camper and drift boat.”

He always wore a smile. His eyes sparkled bright. Kind, selfless and humble.

He is survived by his wife, Renee Faltings, parents Janet and Donald Faltings, his sister Allison Streeby, her husband Dan and their four children, Lucy, Beau, Jack and Beatrice, sister Jennifer Faltings and her daughter Harper Rose and three dogs, Riley, Lily and Bug all residing in Boise, Idaho. Aunts and Uncles Barbara and Warren Kinsman of Ellsworth, Ruth and David Green, Montecito, Calif.

The family would like thank his nurse Allison Ashford for the compassionate care she provided Dave, the team of Doctors and staff at St. Luke’s, Dr. Summer Gibson and staff at the University of Utah ALS Clinic and all of his friends.

A private celebration of life is planned for July 24 at noon on the banks of Silver Creek.

A memorial fund has been setup through the Bald Mountain Rescue Fund. Checks should be made out to The Bald Mountain Rescue Fund with the notation “In memory of Dave Faltings” written on the memo line and sent to: The Bald Mountain Rescue Fund, Attention: Brian Barsotti, PO Box 370, Ketchum, ID, 83340.

Dr. Henry Thomas Perkins

Obit- Perkins_PENOBSCOT – On June 10, Dr. Henry Thomas Perkins died peacefully at his home in Bristol Mills, with his three children by his side, after a decade-long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Hank, as he was known to his friends, was born in Rahway, N.J., on March 20, 1938, and soon after moved to his father’s hometown of Penobscot. He attended the one-room school across from his home, was the only student in his calculus class at Blue Hill High School, dug peat in the bogs, raked low-bush blueberries, and delivered milk (to E.B. White’s house no less).

Through earning a scholarship and working as a busboy in the cafeteria, Hank was able to graduate with a BS in Mathematics from MIT in 1960, followed by a MS in Mathematics from NYU in 1964, and a PhD in Physical Oceanography through the joint program with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and MIT in 1970.  From 1970 to 1971, he was a post-doctorate fellow at the Marine Physics Section of the Institut fur Meereskunde in Kiel, Germany.

From 1971 through 1978, he was assistant professor of Physical Oceanography at the University of Miami.  From 1979 to 1989, he conducted oceanographic research for the Navy with NORDA/NOARL at the Stennis Space Center, MS. In 1989, he took up a position as Principal Scientist at NATO’s SACLANT Undersea Research Centre in La Spezia, Italy, where for five years he worked as chief scientist on board the oceanographic research vessel, Alliance, and interpreted data picked up by Barny, a trawl-safe underwater data recorder he co-created.

He later returned to the Stennis Space Center where he remained until his retirement in 2004, when he volunteered his time and expertise at the Darling Marine Center in Walpole. Throughout his career he traveled the world, collaborating with like minds in Barbados, Africa, Iceland, numerous European countries, the North Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, Japan, South Korea, and the Sea of Japan.

Hank was a quiet, modest, unassuming, nonjudgmental gentleman with a wonderful dry sense of humor.  He was a scientist, seaman, researcher and explorer who spent his life searching for the truth about the physical world.  He possessed a brilliant mind, though he never felt the need for people to know that and rarely spoke about his accomplishments.

His hobbies were gardening, walking the trails of Maine, woodworking, listening to Bach, reading and reciting poetry, making top-notch martinis and staying up to date with the latest research on the brain and the universe.

He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Henry was predeceased by his father James Perkins; mother Marguerite Perkins Rowe; stepfather Virgil Rowe; brother-in-law Dana Jones; and stepson Stefano Luisi.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 20 years, Catherine of Bristol Mills; three children – Bethany (Peter Lamson) of Spartanburg, S.C., Adam (Leyla) of Covington, L.A., and Jordan Bailey (Michael) of Brookline, N.H. Seven grandchildren – Mina, Alexander, Keating, Zahra, Cora, Henry and Ellis; first wife Valerie Perkins of Slidell, L.A.; stepdaughter Moira Luisi (Alessandro Paulin) and step-grandson Ian of Montemarcello, Italy; and his sister, Barbara Jones of Bucksport, and her extended family.

Henry’s remains will be buried privately in the family plot in Penobscot.  A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the organization Compassion and Choices – a cause in which he was particularly engaged.
