GOULDSBORO – Beverly Jean Colson, 63, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2016, surrounded by her family at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. She was born on Oct. 20, 1952, in Steuben, the daughter of the late Donald and Verna Hayward.

Beverly is survived by her loving husband, Michael, of 44 years, daughter Crystal of Gouldsboro, son, Christopher and his and wife, Laurie, of Santa Maria, Calif., brother Jim and Maxine Cuppett of Lebanon Conn., sister Sharon (Hayward) & Elwood Washington of Hampton Va., brother Bob Hayward of Stow, her Uncle Dicky Dugay and Aunt Juanita, both from Cherryfield. She also is survived by close relatives of Michael’s family — Chuck and Patty Colson, Jackie Foss, Jeanne Weeks and Wesley Reed and Gloria and Birchard Church as well as several nephews, nieces and cousins.

Beverly was predeceased by her mother, Verna (Seavey) Hayward, father, Donald Hayward Sr., sister Sheila (Hayward) Monroe and sister Carol (Hayward) Fickett.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to her caregivers, Kim and Cheryle, and her childhood friends, Faye (her quilting partner) and Judy and her daughter-in-law Laurie, who has always been there for her. Thank you to all the doctors and nurses who diligently worked to maintain her quality of life.

Beverly loved her family more than anything, marrying her high school sweetheart Michael in June of 1972, then having her children Crystal and Christopher. Her family was the light of her life.

She was a dedicated volunteer, and coach to her children’s sports teams. She was an active participant in the MS Society, working on the board as well as raising thousands of dollars to give to them. She even met her goal of raising $2,100 for this year’s walk before she passed. Beverly has a work history that included working at Stinson’s and Wyman’s factories then obtaining her bachelor’s degree in education from Chapman University and became a teacher to many students in several schools over the years. She also worked in customer service and management in several places, with her final career being at the Bluenose Inn in Bar Harbor. Because Michael was in the Air Force, they lived in Maine, California, Okinawa and Michigan, so she touched many lives. They were able to return to Maine to visit their family and she stayed close to her roots, and they finally moved back and built a house in 1994, where she lived until her death.

Beverly had a way of making each person feel special and important. The Lord’s angels took her to heaven and left each of us with our precious memories and special moments of her life.

In honor of Beverly, memorial contributions can be made to the MS Society P.O. Box 4527 New York, NY 10163.

A funeral service was held on Monday, May 23, 2016, at the Knights of Pythias in Gouldsboro. The funeral service was followed by a time of visitation and refreshments. A private burial was held Thursday, May 26, at Westbay Cemetery in Gouldsboro. Arrangements have been entrusted to Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Homes in Ellsworth. Online condolences can be made at www.bragdonkelley.com.

Obit- Martin_ELLSWORTH – Beatrice Mitchell Martin, 94, died May 17, 2016, in Ellsworth with her family at her side. She was born in Southwest Harbor on Jan. 25, 1922, the daughter of Malvin “Pete” Mitchell and Vera (Robinson) Mitchell.

Her father worked for Stinson’s Sardines, so Beatrice grew up in the small towns of coastal Maine as Pete moved from factory to factory. Finally, the family returned to Southwest Harbor and Beatrice graduated from Pemetic High School in 1940; she was the last surviving member of her class. She was also one of the last of that Greatest Generation, and when her older brother, Arthur, joined up, Beatrice moved to Holyoke, Mass., and found a job inspecting artillery guns at Worthington Pump for 83 cents per hour. She was proud of her part in the war effort, and as she liked to say, the guns didn’t leave the plant without her approval.

After the war, Bea and her brother returned to Hancock County and opened The Crescent cabins and restaurant. She married Wilton E. Martin of Sullivan on Nov. 2, 1947, in Southwest Harbor as Mount Desert Island burned around them.

Bea’s avocation was antiques. In 1967, she opened The Bow Window Antiques in Orland in partnership with her sister-in-law Barbara (Gray) Martin. Over the course of the next 25 years, Beatrice set up shop in several locations. She was well known as the proprietress of The Even Exchange, a popular antiques shop on the corner of Route 1 and the Tunk Lake Road in Sullivan, until it burned in December of 1999. Beatrice continued to dabble in antiques until just before her death.

Bea, who was better known as “Gram” to her family and the many who loved her, will be forever remembered as a wise and kind mentor and the best kind of friend. She is survived by three children and their spouses: Jeffrey Martin and his wife, Kathleen, of Bethel, Robin Berard and her husband, Tony, of Coral Springs, Fla., and Sullivan, and Jonathan Martin and his wife, Elena, of Ellsworth. She is also survived by eight grandchildren: Christopher Martin (and his wife, Nikki), Angela (Martin) Norige (and her husband, Andy), Shannon Martin, Jeffrey Berard, Alex Berard (and his wife, Leah), Ryan Martin, Ben Chapman, and Greg Martin. She had nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. In her last years, she was well cared for by a special friend and neighbor, Howard Budman. She was predeceased by her parents, her brother Arthur Mitchell, her husband, Wilton E. Martin, and one daughter, Jo Anne Martin.

A memorial service will be held at a date to be announced. Those wishing to make contributions in memory of Beatrice may donate to the Ark Animal Shelter, 60 Barber Lane, Cherryfield, ME.

Mary Carolyn Morrison

Obit- Morrison_HANCOCK – Mary Carolyn Morrison, 73, passed away peacefully at her home on May 31, 2016. Mary was born in Bangor on Jan. 23, 1943, the daughter of Edward Farwell, Sr. and Elaine (Maher) Farwell. Mary graduated from John Bapst Memorial High School and attended Beal College, where she earned her associate degree in business management.

Mary married Bruce A. Morrison on May 2, 1964, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bangor. Mary and Bruce are the proud parents of two surviving children: Kimberly M. Morrison and R. Scott Morrison.

Mary was a proud, loving and devoted grandmother of three amazing grandchildren: Kayla Ann Morrison, Brendon Scott Morrison and Trevor Christophe Morrison. Mary was the eldest of five children and the sister of Edward “Bud” Farwell, Jr. and his wife, Marcia, of Holden, Linda Farwell and her husband, John Manning, of Hallowell, Susan Farwell and her husband, John Philson, of Cumberland, Janice Farwell of Westbrook, and significant other, Donald Walkwitz of Otisfield. Mary was predeceased by her brother, Joseph Farwell.

Mary was happily married to Bruce for 52 years. Mary enjoyed a long career in business with New England Telephone and later as co-owner of Kimsco Supply Co. Mary and Bruce enjoyed traveling, especially to the Caribbean. One of Mary’s favorite roles was that of “Nana”. She enjoyed excursions, dance recitals, sporting and school events with her grandchildren.

Mary enjoyed music, singing, sailing, attending ballet, theater, concerts and summer days by the pool with a good book. Mary was a creative and talented seamstress and embroiderer. One of her most creative projects was a picture of her mother, Elaine Farwell, taken in a field of daisies by her father, deceased BDN photographer Daniel Maher. She applied the photo by silkscreen and created individual wall hangings beautifully embroidered and designed for each one of her siblings.

Mary’s last project was embroidering Christmas Villages, which were given as gifts to family. Mary’s quiet demeanor and ability to keep these gifts from her heart a secret, made them especially meaningful to everyone. Mary loved to cook and decorate for the holidays; she especially loved Christmas. Mary’s thoughtfulness and kind heart extended beyond in many ways. It wasn’t uncommon when relatives, friends and those who didn’t have anywhere to go for the holidays, were invited to the Morrison home in Hancock and Mary would send them home with their own individually prepared turkeys to enjoy.

Mary was the foundation of her family for over 60 years and was very close to her brother Bud, sisters Janice and Susan as well as her cousin Marilyn. Mary touched so many people with her love, kindness, and wisdom.  She was often the “go-to” person when family needed guidance, advice and an objective opinion. Mary will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Mary loved her pets and requested in lieu of flowers that donations be sent to the SPCA of Hancock County. A family memorial service will occur later.

flagSEARSPORT – Lester “Chuck” L. Weser, 94, of Searsport died on June 4, 2016, at Waldo County General Hospital following a period of declining health.

Chuck was born on Dec. 12, 1921, in New City, N.Y., the son of Lester Niles and Harriet Neil Weser. He was educated in New City and graduated from Congers High School in New York. After graduating, Chuck was employed at Grumman, where he worked on the TBF Avenger. A year later, he enlisted in the Coast Guard and was stationed at Fire Island, N.Y. After WWII, Chuck went to work for the Clark’s Town Police Department in New York. His love of cars prompted him to change his career, and in 1955 he opened Weser Ford in Tuxedo Park, N.Y. In 1959, Chuck moved his family to Maine and along with his wife, Helen, opened Check with Chuck Auto Sales in Northport. He also enjoyed selling real estate and in his later years opened Bay Shore Realty.

Chuck was faithful in getting his Uncle Henry’s every week and would read each and every ad. Chuck and Helen together would go and seek out treasures, collectibles and antiques. He was interested in everything. Chuck was a fix-it kind of guy and made sure his family didn’t forget his favorite line: “if someone built it, I can sure as hell fix it!” Words well spoken from a child of the Depression. Chuck loved to hunt, whether with his sons in the woods of Waldo County or with friends in the Adirondacks in New York. In his senior years, Chuck loved to regale anyone who would listen to his stories; it gave him one more opportunity to relive his 94 years. Also, Chuck was very proud to be a Mason and was a 61-year member of Excelsior Lodge No. 151 in Northport.

Chuck was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Helen Getter, and his son Corey Christopher. Chuck is survived by his three sons, Lester Richard and his wife Nancy Kelley of Searsmont, Robert George and his wife Susan Schmalkuke of Lake Park, Fla., and Peter Niles and his wife, Denise Colone, of Orland. Chuck is also survived by two granddaughters, Heidi Ann Burke and her husband Steven of Warrenton, Va., and Kristen Kelley Brazier of Brewer. Chuck has two great-grandchildren, Corey Jameson Burke and Clancey Merle Brazier. Chuck had some very dear friends and one who he especially adored — “my” Dulcie Noble, David Bishop, Tom Noble, DJ Bishop, Sharon Dean and Dr. Brad Samojla.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 8, at Riposta Funeral Home 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast, with a committal at Maplewood Cemetery Lincolnville.

Those who wish may make donations in Chuck’s memory to Searsport Ambulance or Hospice Volunteers of Waldo County, P.O. Box 772, Belfast, ME 04915. Memories and condolences may be offered to the family at www.ripostafh.com.

Anne Tatum Hayes

Obit- Anne Hayes_ELLSWORTH – Anne Tatum Hayes, wife, mother, gardener, athlete and active volunteer, died at home in her sleep, June 6, 2016, just five months after the death of her husband of 66 years, Dr. Leonidas “Lee” Hayes.

Born in 1925, Anne lived with her parents and sister near her Quaker father’s family in the Philadelphia suburbs. During the Depression, the extended family all shared a home, steeping Anne in the values of peacemaking, cooperation, service and frugality. Anne’s mother was from France, having met and married her husband while he served in France with the American Friends Service Committee. As a child, Anne spent every other summer in France, cherishing playtime with her extended family there. Anne loved playing outdoors and developed an enduring interest in the natural sciences.

A graduate of Radnor High School and Rosemont College, Anne was working as a lab technician when she met Lee. They married in 1949, and moved from Philadelphia to rural Pennsylvania, where Lee was a doctor and Anne focused on raising their six children.

She and Lee were active in progressive politics, including protesting the death sentence for the Rosenbergs, and community improvement projects, notably helping to found the Yellow Springs Historical Society. Anne also began her involvement with efforts to improve conditions for people with developmental disabilities, having both a cousin and a son with intellectual disabilities.

When the family moved to Ellsworth in 1971, Anne met other parents of disabled children by volunteering during swimming lessons for disabled children and helped to found Downeast Horizons in 1974. Anne felt privileged to serve for six years on the Maine Commission on the Problems of the Mentally Retarded, including three as its chairperson. The commission’s work led to the signing of the Pineland Consent Decree and the establishment of group homes for the disabled throughout the state.

Anne’s interest in international understanding brought her to the Ellsworth chapter of the American Field Service, which organizes exchange programs for high school students with other states and nations. She served as the chapter’s president, hosted an exchange student for a year, and sent three of her children on exchange trips.

The Surry Opera Company provided Anne with another outlet for peacemaking, along with the joys of friendship and the challenge of music performance. She studied the Russian language before traveling with the company to the Soviet Union twice, and later to Russia, the Georgian Republic, Japan, Canada and France. She also regularly attended presentations of the International Club, and was proud to host an International Club meeting at which her grandson Sasha spoke about his year studying in Japan.

Anne and Lee loved hosting social gatherings, including Democratic Party events with special guests George Mitchell, Joe Brennan, Walter Mondale and Mike Michaud. After her mother came to live with them full time, Anne began hosting teas with other French-speakers, gatherings that led to the formation of Le Cercle Francais, Hancock County’s monthly francophone social. Anne maintained strong connections with her French cousins and traveled to France many times.

Anne was a longtime member of the Ellsworth Literature Club, giving reports on books she loved until she was 90. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish and taught Sunday school. Anne was a dancer and athlete in school, loved the Red Sox, and played tennis all her life. She so enjoyed her Ellsworth doubles group that she continued to attend monthly birthday parties 15 years after she had to give up the sport. An avid gardener, Anne delighted in sharing plants and putting away produce that she had raised. She also loved birding and even after her eyesight clouded she would wear binoculars around her neck to watch birds out the kitchen window.

With community service as one of her core values, Anne participated in the Maine Coast Memorial Hospital Auxiliary for decades, helping with committee work, serving as president, and diligently staffing the canteen or welcome desk with her daughters or with her neighbor, Lorna McCormick. Anne also served on the Ellsworth Historic Preservation Commission and was a member of Citizens for Responsible Development.

After her mother’s death, Anne became an active volunteer with Hospice of Hancock County. She provided faithful, caring companionship to people in the final stage of life until she had to give up driving at the age of 87. When Lee received a terminal diagnosis of cancer, Anne devoted herself to his care, working with Hospice and family to keep him in comfort at home. She received her own terminal cancer diagnosis only weeks before Lee’s death, and enjoyed her last months hosting a steady stream of friends and family.

In addition to her sister, Marguerite Cackley of Vorheesville, N.Y., and first cousins Robert Brebant and spouse Janine of St. Clare, France, and Jacqueline Brebant of Paris, France, Anne is survived by her sons: Jonathan of Ellsworth, and Bob and spouse Christina Rusnov of Winslow; daughters: Loie and spouse Julie Ogletree of Boston, Julie and spouse Norm Duphily of Auburn, Susie and partner Tom Cappiello of Palmer, Alaska, and Sarah and spouse Mark Dehler of Kanata, Ontario; grandchildren: Anne, Katie, Sasha, Aaron, Nora, Elizabeth, Micah, Nicholas; great-grandchildren: Patrick and Imogen, and many cherished nieces and nephews.

Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to HOME Inc., P.O. Box 10, Orland, ME, 04472; Hospice Volunteers of Hancock County, 14 McKenzie Ave., Ellsworth ME, 04605; and Downeast Horizons, 1200 State Highway 3, Bar Harbor, ME 04609.

Visitation hours 5-7 p.m., Monday, June 13, at Jordan-Fernald Funeral Home, Ellsworth; funeral Mass, 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 14, at St. Joseph’s, Ellsworth; 11:30 a.m., reception in parish.

Obit- Maclean_FRANKLIN – Judith Ann Maclean, 79, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, cousin, aunt and friend, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2016. Her life was filled with love, laughter, music, books, art, photography, family and friends. Judith Ann, (Judie, Jude, Mom, Grammy, Aunt Judie) was always up for an adventure, creating good natured mischief and mayhem almost everywhere she went. Her sense of humor was infectious and endearing. She was a wonderful storyteller and she cherished the number of years she worked at the Ellsworth Public Library as the assistant children’s librarian.

Storytelling always came naturally to her and Judith Ann often would use puppets and props to bring a story to life. An avid reader all her life, books, books and more books always surrounded her. As time passed and her eyesight faded, she remained undaunted transferring her affections to books on tape and CD. You could always count on her for a stimulating conversation pertaining to her current subject of interest.

A deeply spiritual woman, Judith Ann lived her life ever curious about the unseen, unknown realms and her personal convictions held her close through the challenging last years of her life when she was not able to communicate with those she loved as she once had. Even then, her sense of humor remained intact through the last days of her life, and for this we will always be grateful.

She lives on in each of us in perfect, special and unique ways. If it weren’t for her, we would not be who we are; Bob, her husband of 61 years; her children, Kevin, Tracy, Heather and Cameron; her grandchildren, Lanika, Brendan, Hilary, Phoebe and Lauren; and her great-grandchildren, Jade, Emma, Jakob, Ashlin and Roman. We honor her in love and gratitude for a beautiful and precious life well lived and for showing us the power of Auntie Mame’s words, “Yes! LIVE! Life’s a banquet, and most poor suckers are starving to death.”

Obit- Barbara Frost_OTIS – Barbara Ann Frost arrived in this world March 6, 1931, and left June 7, 2016.

It was a great 85 years. I had the best of both worlds, living at Beech Hill Pond, Otis, in the summer and Cardinal Cove, Fort Myers, Fla., in the winter.

I loved hosting holiday gatherings and celebrations, parties and dancing, traveling and cruising. Wherever I was, I was always surrounded by my loving family and friends — making memories and traditions that I hope will live on forever.

I am survived by my five children and their spouses; Pamela and Mark Sargent, Stephen Frost, Patricia and Michael Rock, Clifton and Pam Frost, and Heather Frost and Malcolm Higgins. My nine grandchildren — Ben Sargent and Dani Harriman, Justin Frost, Joshua Rock, Abbey and Trevor Jessiman, Katelin and Paul Joseph Lucas, Paige Colwell-Frost, Taylor Higgins, Megan Higgins and grand-daughter-in law Cindi Sargent. My four great-grandchildren — Nicholas Sargent, Andrew Sargent, William Sargent and Cassidy Rock. Special Niece Kelly Strang-Richard, and Honorary daughter Jan Li.

People waiting on the other side to greet me are my parents — Pete and Mary Fernald, husband of 38 years Harold P. Frost, twin sister Joan Strang, sister Jean Dube, special niece Cindy Polo, first grandson Jason R. Sargent, and partner for 16 years Bud Sella, along with many other family members and friends.

In accordance with my wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial celebration of life will be held at “Camp” on Beech Hill Pond, 225 West Shore Road, Otis, Maine on Saturday the 2nd of July, from 1-3 p.m. I was very Patriotic (The 4th of July being my favorite holiday) so in my honor please — wear red white and blue — bring a chair — and bring a story to tell!

Memorial contributions may be made to A Maine Veterans Organization, The Travis Mills Foundation, Belgrade Lakes Retreat, 89 Water St., Hallowell, ME 04347 (Travis Mills.org) or Hope Hospice, 9470 Healthpark Circle, Fort Myers, FL 33908, Attn: Development. (Donate.hopehcs.org).
