Patricia N. Gorski

Obit- Gorski_BROOKLIN – Patricia N. Gorski, died June 26, 2016, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. She was 76.

Bunny was born in New Jersey on May 6, 1940, the older of two children of Irene and Carroll Morris. The “rabbit test” to determine pregnancy was relatively new at that time, and when it came back positive, little Patricia was nicknamed Bunny even before she was born. She embraced the name and made it her own. The rabbit became her totem and family and friends always enjoyed giving her gifts, cards and paintings featuring her spirit animal.

Bunny grew up in a number of towns in the Morristown area of New Jersey for most of her childhood. She was proud to be descended from two signers of the Declaration of Independence: Robert Morris, financier of the American Revolution; and Charles Carroll, who became the first U.S. senator for Maryland.

Bunny graduated from the Academy of Saint Elizabeth in Convent Station, the oldest all-girls high school in New Jersey. During her school days, she might have met her future husband, Richard “Dick” Gorski, while attending dancing classes for local girls and boys — if he hadn’t ducked out of the classes and gone to the movies instead.

Bunny later met Dick, the love of her life, on a blind date in 1958. They married in 1960, and had two children, Peter and Elizabeth (Beth), and lived in several New Jersey communities, including Bernardsville and New Vernon. Dick worked for architectural firms in New York City, while Bunny not only was a loving wife and mother, but devoted herself to social and political causes such as the campaign of George McGovern and protesting the war in Vietnam. She also taught herself to become a gourmet cook, an accomplished gardener and amateur farmer, raising goats, pigs and chickens.

In 1976, Bunny and Dick and their family made a radical change in their lives by moving to Brooklin, which at the time was extremely isolated and rural. Life there was a struggle at first, with the family combating illness and unemployment and having to cut nearly 16 cords of firewood that first winter to keep their old, uninsulated farmhouse warm.

But Dick and Bunny — eternal optimists despite many challenges — persevered and became integral members of the community. Dick worked for WoodenBoat magazine in Brooklin for many years and was active in local politics. Bunny became a mainstay of the local Democratic Party and held many occupations over the years, including running her own yarn shop in Blue Hill, teaching cooking, doing landscaping and becoming a polarity and massage therapist.

It was that training combined with her life-long acquired knowledge of the body’s chemical balancing and workings that helped she and Dick in 1999 in their fight against brain cancer with which he had been diagnosed. That battle came to an end nearly two years later, far longer than his doctors had given him.

Bunny later became a founder of the Brooklin Pottery Co-op and a successful potter. Her work was sold in a number of galleries around the state. One of her early creations, delicate and lacey “Bunny Bowls” were in demand from day one and she was continually asked to produce more.

But most of all, Bunny was known as a friend. Virtually everyone in Brooklin — and many in nearby Blue Hill — knew Bunny Gorski. A true extrovert, she loved a party, and talking to and being with other people — family and friends — was her greatest joy. Pete and Beth came to call her the “Energizer Bunny” because no matter how late the hour, she was always up for one more round of conversation. Until the end, Bunny remained young and vigorous for her age and had plans to live until she was 500.

During Bunny’s last week at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, she rallied herself to hold one final party with a group of close friends and family. On a brilliant sunny June afternoon, everyone sat around her bed as she and they enjoyed a favorite dessert of chocolate bouchons and mango gelato. Everyone laughed and talked, Bunny most of all. Her room was filled with flowers and cards and, as one friend wrote, although they couldn’t all be there in person in her room, an entire town was with her in spirit.

Bunny was predeceased by her husband, her father and mother, and her brother, Norman Morris. She is survived by her daughter Beth, of Portland; her son, Pete, and daughter-in-law, Tess Nacelewicz, both of South Portland; sister-in-law Marcia Orr, of Mountain City, Tenn.; six beloved nieces and nephews; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

A celebration of Bunny’s life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 9, at The Bay School’s Emlen Hall in Blue Hill. A reception will follow at 1 p.m., at The Farmhouse Inn in Blue Hill. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: The Brooklin Youth Corps.

Mary (Etzler) Hawks Steinhardt

Obit- SteinhardtHANCOCK POINT – Mary (Etzler) Hawks Steinhardt, 93, of Roanoke, Va., and Hancock Point, passed away from natural causes on Friday, June 24, at Brandon Oaks Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Roanoke. She was affiliated with the Unitarian Universalist Church of Roanoke.

Mary was born in Mount Airy, N.C., on Nov. 26, 1922, oldest child of Ruth Etzler Hawks and Howard Washington Hawks of Lambsburg, Va. She was predeceased by her parents and by her two brothers, Howard Warren Hawks and Richard Eugene Hawks.

Mary received her Bachelor of Science degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Class of 1944, and was one of the first women admitted to the school. While still an undergraduate, she addressed the Virginia Legislature on the value of coeducational education.

She also received a Master of Arts degree in psychology from Hollins College in 1967, writing her thesis on language acquisition in infants. For many years, she taught developmental psychology and early childhood education at Virginia Western Community College in Roanoke, where she was known to be a committed and inspiring teacher. She was tireless in pursuing the well-being of children in Virginia and was recognized for her work by the governor of the Commonwealth and by the Virginia Association for Early Childhood Education.

Mary was active politically, especially as a member of the League of Women Voters in Bethlehem, Pa., and in Roanoke, where she served on multiple boards for a variety of civic groups. She is also remembered for her role as a supportive and hospitable faculty wife when her husband, Ralph Steinhardt, taught chemistry at Hollins. They met and fell in love at VPI, where they shared a joie de vivre that lasted until Ralph’s death in 1994. Mary also worked briefly at the library at Los Alamos National Laboratory, where Ralph had served during World War II on the Manhattan Project.

Mary was a distinguished cook and reader, passing these affections happily to her children. She enjoyed music passionately, looking forward especially to the annual Bach Festival in Bethlehem. She and her family most enjoyed sharing a summer house in Hancock Point, where her infectious wonder and appreciation for the natural world found much to rejoice in, a quality she maintained until the very end.

It was here in Maine that her natural talent as hostess and cook found time to flourish, as friends from far and wide came to spend time on the wide front porch, and to share the conviviality of Ralph and Mary’s hospitality. Coming to Maine in the summertime came to be the time she could most indulge her generous impulses as matriarch, colleague and friend. After Ralph’s death, she found time for her lifelong desire to garden, and established a lovely one that brought her, her family and passersby great joy.

Those who knew her best will remember her for a brilliant mind, a sympathetic heart, and an eye and an ear for beauty They will also remember her habitual farewell, “Be careful crossing the Hudson!” and her observation late in life that “we live in a wondrous world!”

She will be joyfully remembered and sadly missed by her survivors: her daughter Theresa Ruth and her husband, Walter B. Neilsen-Steinhardt; her daughter Sarah Jean Steinhardt, her husband, David Turkheimer, and her daughter, Anna Ruth Cantor; her son Ralph Gustav Steinhardt, his wife, Donna Scarboro, and their children, Ruth Jackson Steinhardt and Ralph Gustav Steinhardt Jr.; as well as her beloved sisters-in-law, Kathleen Joan Culbreth Hawks and Louise Myers Hawks, and many nieces and nephews and their children.

There will be a memorial service at the Hancock Point Chapel on Aug. 14, 2016, at 5 p.m., followed by one in Roanoke, Va., on Sept. 24, 2016, at a venue to be determined later.

Following the service, her remains will be interred with those of her husband in Lambsburg, Va. The family wishes to thank the staff and administration of Brandon Oaks Retirement Community, especially its Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where Mary spent her last years.

In lieu of flowers, mourners wishing to remember Mary may donate to the Frenchman Bay Conservancy (frenchmanbay.org), the Bach Choir of Bethlehem (bach.org) or to the Mary and Ralph Steinhardt Fund (Science Seminars) through Hollins University (hollins.edu).

The family would like to thank their many friends and family for their kind expressions of comfort at this difficult time.

Obit- PostHANCOCK – Cynthia Post (Cindy), beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend, died on July 11, 2016, at Eastern Maine Medical Center after an unsuccessful treatment for pneumonia and congestive heart failure. She was 73 years old.

She is survived by her sons Brendan and Liam Goodman, her daughters-in-law Vicka and Theresa, her grandchildren Graham, Gabriel and Bella, her sister Diana Post-Hall, her brother-in-law Cliff Hall and the many friends she made along the way.

Cynthia was born in Philadelphia, Pa., in October of 1942 to Edith and Joseph Post. During her early years, Cynthia enjoyed spending time with her Irish grandparents, Margaret and George Wilson. These caring people were devoted to her. Cynthia remembered and spoke of their loving kindness throughout her life.

Cynthia was educated at Abington Friends School (AFS), where the Quaker values of compassion, love of learning and independent thought remained with her throughout her life. Cynthia came to enjoy working with children as a result of helping out at the family’s nursery school, which was located in their home on Cheltenham Avenue.

A slender girl, Cynthia studied first ballet then modern dance. She excelled at choreography and performing while in high school. After graduating from AFS, she briefly served as a teaching assistant in the modern dance department at the University of Pennsylvania. She then moved to New York City at age 17 to work at a magazine and study dance under Martha Graham.

In 1970, Cynthia married Dr. Paul Goodman while living in City Island, N.Y. The couple had two sons together, Brendan and Liam.

The family moved to Hancock in 1981, where Cynthia resided the rest of her life. Cynthia and Paul separated in 1983 and were later divorced.

While raising her sons as a single mom and briefly caring for her ailing mother, Cynthia worked as a substance abuse counselor at New Horizons. She soon earned degrees in Movement Therapy and Counseling Psychology from Antioch Graduate School, College of the Atlantic, The New School and the Laban Institute of Movement Studies. In 1992, Cynthia began working as a child protective case worker for the state of Maine and also served as an adoption worker and supervisor until her retirement in 2011.

Always gregarious with a comedic wit, Cynthia was a free spirit who loved taking classes, listening to music and playing the bodhran. She acted in several plays with the Penobscot Theatre Company and the New Surry Theatre and continued to dance throughout her life. She also had a soft spot for animals and often took in stray dogs and cats that had nowhere else to go.

Cynthia had a penchant for social justice and an innate compassion for all people that crossed her path. Upon her retirement she became very involved with the Community Union of Ellsworth, whose goals include raising the minimum wage and fighting inequality.

The work they did together was very important to her and she could often be found demonstrating, picketing and asking people to think about the choices they make in life. Additionally, Cynthia was a regular volunteer for the Welcome Table soup kitchen and the Democratic Party of Hancock County.

Obit- HuntflagEAST BLUE HILL – Donald Harvey Hunt, husband of Dorothy Johnson Hunt (deceased), died in Eugene, Ore., on June 13, 2016, at the age of 96.

Dorothy was born in East Blue Hill in 1917, and was a member of the Long Family Kindred, the descendants of the founder of East Blue Hill.

Don was born in Worcester, Mass., on June 12, 1920, the oldest son of Pitman Willis Hunt and Alice Ada Dow. He joined the Army as an enlisted man in 1940, was made an officer in 1942 and served in the Army Air Force Weather Service as a weather officer pilot and instructor in meteorology, mustering out with the rank of major in 1946. There he was one of the first pilots to fly into a hurricane to obtain meteorological data.

He then entered Harvard College, became fluent in Russian and graduated with a major in Russian studies in two years. Don then began top secret U.S. government work he never talked about. When the group he managed was merged into the CIA, he chose to move to California to work on the top secret development of the Distant Early Warning defense system (DEW Line).

Don returned to government service in the Washington area, where he received a service award from President Lyndon Johnson. He was involved in special assignments including: recommended preparations to limit earthquake damage in San Francisco, which were implemented before the next major earthquake; evaluation of then dwindling supplies of natural gas, leading to a reversal of historic regulatory policies which inhibited development of reserves; and as science adviser, negotiation of the Ozone Treaty, which has removed the risk we all faced of major increases in exposure to harmful radiation from the sun.

He led the reorganization of the National Weather Service and related services into a new agency, coming up with the name NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). Serving as deputy administrator until his retirement, he led efforts to improve the prediction of both everyday weather and severe storms. At the end of his career, he led NOAA’s deployment of Doppler Weather Radar, the basis of weather radar today.

After his wife Dorothy’s death in 1994, he married Yvonne Fries of Calgary. They were happily married for more than 15 years, and traveled extensively, ending with a six-week grand tour of Europe, and celebrating his 90th birthday in Paris. Tragically, Yvonne died soon thereafter. Don spent the remainder of his life at Cascade Manor in Eugene, Ore., where he was well known for telling stories of his life and loved by all.

He is survived by his children Clifford, Karen and David, his grandchildren David (Wally), Elizabeth (Ellie), Shirley Chan and Tina Beutler, his great-grandson, Justin Chan, his stepchildren Allan Fries, Jim Fries and Barbara Berry, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at Seaside Cemetery in Blue Hill, Maine, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 23, 2016, but attendees should arrive at least 15 minutes early due to limited parking.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for contributions for the maintenance of Seaside Cemetery, which can be mailed to: Town of Blue Hill, Attn. Jody Murphy, P.O. Box 412, Blue Hill, ME 04614. Checks should be made payable to: Town of Blue Hill, with the memo line “Upkeep of Seaside Cemetery.”
