Obit- Charles Joseph Pokoney JrFRANKLIN – Charles Joseph Pokoney Jr., 77, “Mountain Man,” passed away peacefully with his children by his side on May 1, 2016, at MaineCoastMemorialHospital in Ellsworth. He was born on April 23, 1939, the son of Charles and Virginia Pokoney of Peekskill, N.Y.

Growing up in the shadow of the Rock Cut on Annesville Creek, he attended Van Cortland Elementary and Lakeland High School, where he met and married his childhood sweetheart and mother of his two children, Maxine Cillis. They were married for 25 years and lived in Continental Village, N.Y., where they were active members of the Continental Village Volunteer Fire Department. In addition, the family spent much time on their boat Chug-a-mug on the Hudson River, holding late night bonfires, and family campouts, all while enjoying the majestic Hudson River Valley. The owner of a small tree service, he also worked construction and ran heavy equipment. He was a member of the New York Operating Engineers Union Local No. 137, and worked on hundreds of jobs in the tri-state area. Mountain Man fell in love with Maine in the late 1970s and bought a home in Franklin. He spent many years traveling back and forth from New York to Maine, and had many adventures along the way.

He is survived by his daughter, Denise Black and husband, Philip, and grandsons Otto and Cooper Black of Blue Hill, son Michael Pokoney and wife, Laurie, of Franklin, grandsons Justin Pokoney and Shannon Pokoney and wife Amy of Ellsworth, and former wives Maxine Cillis Gause of Ellsworth and Mary Lemoine of Swan’s Island.

Mountain Man was a 48-year member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, member of the Ellsworth Moose Lodge, and member of the Franklin Veterans Club, and leaves behind many special friends and fond memories of good times with his brothers and sisters from these organizations. A free spirit, you lived life on your own terms, worked hard and played harder, enjoyed your adventures and the simple pleasures in life. You may be gone, but you will never be forgotten.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, June 5, at the Ellsworth Elks Lodge, High Street from 2-4 p.m. Please feel free to bring a dish to share.

Memories and condolences may be offered to the family at www.directcremationofmaine.com. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Elks Lodge, 317 High St., or the Moose Lodge, 47 Foster St., Ellsworth, ME 04605.

Charles Putnam Dethier

BLUE HILL – Charles Putnam Dethier died in his sleep in his own bed May 8, 2016, at the grand age of 98. He was born in New York City on Dec. 10, 1917, to Avis Putnam Dethier and Edouard Dethier, and led a full life devoted to his three passions — family, education and Blue Hill.

He and Maisie Hardenbergh (1921-2014) met as youngsters in the ’20s and married in 1948, raising four children (who in turn raised seven grandchildren) in their home in Wayne, Pa.

Charlie enjoyed a long, satisfying and multifaceted career at the Haverford School in Pennsylvania, where he began as a French teacher but worked his way up to be head of the lower school, serving also as coach of football, baseball and squash teams. He knew many new Haverfordians in kindergarten, followed their exploits through college, and remained in touch with students he taught before the war.

From 1921 on, he spent his summers at his family’s home in East Blue Hill, where he could sit on the porch simultaneously reading and admiring the view into McHeard Cove. A lifelong sailing enthusiast, Charlie knew the winds, waters and rocks of Blue Hill Bay as well as anyone. As recently as age 96, he sailed his beloved Mercury with a crew of children and grandchildren around Jed’s Island, barking at the seals. He managed the Kollegewidgwok Yacht Club in the 1950s and was also a fine golfer and tennis player and a member of the Blue Hill Country Club.

Charlie was a voracious reader and had an amazing memory: he could remember plots and names from books he’d read 60 years ago, give statistics for his favorite athletes, recall conversations from decades ago and tell you the name of a musical piece and its composer after hearing just a few notes. He was the essence of a multi-tasker, listening to classical music while correcting school papers and fielding his kids’ homework questions. His stories made everyone laugh, and feel, and aspire to live as richly as he did.

Charlie would be pleased to have friends donate to a favorite educational institution rather than send flowers. Friends are also encouraged to contribute to a memorial collection of “Charlie Stories” by sending detailed memories of stories by or about Charlie to brock.dethier@usu.edu.

Obit- David Curtis_flagHANCOCK – David C. Curtis, 79, died May 22, 2016, after a brief illness. He was born Feb. 8, 1937, in Boston, Mass., as the only son of Albert and Nancy (Covelle) Curtis, and nephew of Cmdr. Katherine Curtis Siggins, Dave grew up in Medford and Winchester, Mass., graduating from Winchester High School in 1955.

After high school, Dave graduated from East Coast Aero Tech and signed on for an eight-year term in the Army Reserves.

Early in his life, Dave worked a variety of jobs, ranging from aircraft mechanic at Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. in Connecticut, to door-to-door salesman with Fuller Brush Co. in Massachusetts, before finally settling into his career with New England Telephone. After retiring in 1989, Dave and Anne moved to Hancock.

During retirement Dave enjoyed many hobbies, from camping and following local stock car racing to building model airplanes and model trains to learning about computers. Always an avid tinkerer, Dave continued his love of building and figuring out how things worked.
