FRANKLIN – Charles Joseph Pokoney Jr., 77, “Mountain Man,” passed away peacefully with his children by his side on May 1, 2016, at MaineCoastMemorialHospital in Ellsworth. He was born on April 23, 1939, the son of Charles and Virginia Pokoney of Peekskill, N.Y.
Growing up in the shadow of the Rock Cut on Annesville Creek, he attended Van Cortland Elementary and Lakeland High School, where he met and married his childhood sweetheart and mother of his two children, Maxine Cillis. They were married for 25 years and lived in Continental Village, N.Y., where they were active members of the Continental Village Volunteer Fire Department. In addition, the family spent much time on their boat Chug-a-mug on the Hudson River, holding late night bonfires, and family campouts, all while enjoying the majestic Hudson River Valley. The owner of a small tree service, he also worked construction and ran heavy equipment. He was a member of the New York Operating Engineers Union Local No. 137, and worked on hundreds of jobs in the tri-state area. Mountain Man fell in love with Maine in the late 1970s and bought a home in Franklin. He spent many years traveling back and forth from New York to Maine, and had many adventures along the way.
He is survived by his daughter, Denise Black and husband, Philip, and grandsons Otto and Cooper Black of Blue Hill, son Michael Pokoney and wife, Laurie, of Franklin, grandsons Justin Pokoney and Shannon Pokoney and wife Amy of Ellsworth, and former wives Maxine Cillis Gause of Ellsworth and Mary Lemoine of Swan’s Island.
Mountain Man was a 48-year member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, member of the Ellsworth Moose Lodge, and member of the Franklin Veterans Club, and leaves behind many special friends and fond memories of good times with his brothers and sisters from these organizations. A free spirit, you lived life on your own terms, worked hard and played harder, enjoyed your adventures and the simple pleasures in life. You may be gone, but you will never be forgotten.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, June 5, at the Ellsworth Elks Lodge, High Street from 2-4 p.m. Please feel free to bring a dish to share.
Memories and condolences may be offered to the family at www.directcremationofmaine.com. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Elks Lodge, 317 High St., or the Moose Lodge, 47 Foster St., Ellsworth, ME 04605.
