OBIT- Larry King Older_OBIT- Larry King Younger_

ELLSWORTH – Lawrence “Larry” Franklin King, 68, passed away peacefully on April 19 at his home attended by his loving family. He was the son of Eugene F. and Dorothy E. (Maddocks) King. Larry was born Oct. 20, 1947, the day of the Bar Harbor Fire. Right after birth, he and his mother were transferred to Hancock Point on the Sunbeam to escape the approaching fire. Thus began his love of boating, which continued over his lifetime, concluding with a surprise Christmas gift for Nancy — a Caribbean cruise in January 2016.

Larry was raised in Bar Harbor in the village of Salisbury Cove. He graduated from Bar Harbor High School and attended the University of Southern Maine and then moved to New Hampshire to work for Ingersoll Rand. After five years, he had an opportunity to go into business with his father at Associated Builders. He was joined by brothers, Bob and Doug. Larry was very proud of his family’s achievements and their business successes.

His decades of dedication to the city of Ellsworth began as a member of the Board of Appeals in 1976, and he served twice as chair. In 1988, Larry was appointed to the Planning Board, which he served until 1999, when he was elected to the City Council. He also led the Comprehensive Plan Committee from 1989 to 1992. During his seven years on the council, King was chairman from 2003–2005. He was a past president of the Ellsworth Chamber and the Ellsworth Rotary Club. Larry believed that you get out of the community what you’re willing to put into it. He served the community in so many ways; often the contributions were private.

He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy J. Tilden King of Ellsworth; children, Jennifer King of Ellsworth, Kristen King and husband, Shawn Mahoney, of Florida, Troy Adams and fiancée Katie Feeney of Ellsworth; grandchildren, Cory, Caitlyn, Evan and Jackson; brothers, Robert King and wife, Nancy, of Ellsworth, David King and wife, Lisa, of Gorham, Jeff King and wife Jody of Trenton, Doug King and wife, Tracy, of Ellsworth; the mother of his daughters, Susan King of Ellsworth; two aunts, Alice Jordan of Ellsworth, Charlotte Wilson of Rockport, N.Y.; an uncle, Stephen Maddocks of Fairfield; several nieces and nephews, and countless friends.

Friends may call from 5-7 PM, Friday, April 29, at the First Congregational Church of Ellsworth, where funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, April 30. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments in the parish hall following the service. Interment will be at Woodbine Cemetery, Ellsworth, following the reception. Those who wish to remember Larry in a special way may make gifts to First Congregational Church of Ellsworth, 2 Church St., Ellsworth, ME 04605, or to the Ellsworth Historical Society, 40 State St., Ellsworth, ME 04605. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.BrookingsSmith.com.

OBIT Albert Sprague_BLUE HILL – Albert “Tim” Tilden Sprague IV, 63, passed away March 9 at his home in Blue Hill after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Originally from Marshfield, Mass., Tim moved to Duxbury, Mass., in the early ’70s, working for Sweetster’s General Store through the mid-1980s. He was also a valued worker with the Badger Co., a subsidiary of Raytheon in Cambridge, Mass., from the mid-1980s until the late 1990s. He was also a successful fisherman, providing mussels and other shellfish to many area establishments and to fine New York City restaurants. After retiring to Blue Hill, Tim pursued his passions for antique collecting, playing pool, salmon fishing and creating and maintaining magnificent gardens at his home with his loving wife and companion, Nancy. Their gardens were routinely included in the annual garden tours of the area.

Tim was immensely proud of his heritage being a direct descendant of Englishman William Sprague, who arrived in Massachusetts in 1628 and, along with his brothers, helped co-found the city of Charlestown and shaped the future of Mass. Another ancestor, Captain Seth Ford Sprague, was the first to carry an American flag aboard a naval ship, the Smyrna, into the Black Sea. Tim’s grandfather was a rear admiral, and his father Albert T. Sprague III, was a commander in the U.S. Navy.

Tim was a fascinating storyteller, a “trouble-making” prankster, a source of great amusement to all who knew him, and a caring and thoughtful neighbor and friend to so very many.

Beyond his wife, Nancy, Tim is survived by his two stepdaughters Laura Alinovi and Sara Alinovi, Sarah’s husband Anthony McComas; his sister Jennifer Sprague Zwiebel; neice Erin Ann Robertson; and nephew Matthew Albert Zweibel.

A private celebration of Tim’s life will be held with family members and select close friends May 7, and the First Annual Timmy Sprague Memorial Pool Tournament will be held at Tag’s Pool Hall in Ellsworth Sunday afternoon, May 15. The brackets are already filled, but spectators and well-wishers are most welcome.

OBIT- Stephen TitcombBLUE HILL – Stephen Chandler Titcomb of Blue Hill, age 63, died April 16 doing one of the things he loved the most — ski mountaineering — while in the Italian Alps with friends. Steve’s adventurous spirit took him and his wife many beautiful places throughout the world hiking, skiing, canoeing, sailing and sea kayaking. They shared a love of finding new adventures together and followed the motto “go light, go cheap, but most importantly go now.”

Steve was born May 25, 1952, in Springfield, Vt. He began skiing at a young age and raced on his high school ski team. He graduated from the University of Vermont with a degree in forestry. As a young man, he bought 160 acres of forest on a mountain in northern Vermont, which would remain a place close to his heart. He was very at home in the woods, swinging from sapling trees down the hillsides, sugaring in the spring and caretaking the forest.

He put his heart and soul into the woods of the mountain. After moving to Maine, he spent a full month each spring and fall on his woodlot in Vermont, which he managed for over 35 years. Each year Steve made at least 7 gallons of syrup to give away to friends and family.

The only place that could draw Steve out of the mountains of Vermont was the harbor and ocean in Blue Hill. He felt blessed to have the best of both worlds — a place in the Vermont woods and a home on the ocean in Maine. Whether in the woods or on the ocean Steve was always aware of his natural surroundings and enjoyed the beauty and wonder of nature.

In 1982, he married Terri Ward of Seattle, and they made their home in Jeffersonville, Vt., and began raising their children Leah and Jack while building a log cabin on their woodlot. In 1996, they kept the cabin but moved to Brooklin and then to Blue Hill.

Steve was a skilled carpenter and developed his career in house restoration and rentals. He was often heard saying how much he loved providing people with a good place to live and he became close friends with many of his tenants.

Steve and Terri began sea kayaking in 1985, eventually becoming Maine sea kayak guides, first working tours out of Eggemoggin Lodge and then starting their own guide service. Each year they would take an extended kayaking trip, kayaking the entire coast of Maine (north of Portland) working their way up the New Brunswick coast.

They also enjoyed kayaking in Newfoundland and British Columbia. Steve and Terri both loved canoeing on the Allagash, St. John and North Maine Woods waterways, the Rio Grande, and the Everglades. They enjoyed hiking and skiing both worldwide and locally. They backcountry skied in Vermont, Maine, the Gaspe Peninsula and the Alps. They hiked the Tour De Mont Blanc, the Dolomites, throughout Ireland and the Annapurna loop in Nepal.

Steve enjoyed working with the Blue Hill Heritage Trust helping to improve trail conditions and make nature more accessible for the people of the peninsula. If you are interested in making a donation in his name, please donate to the Blue Hill Heritage Trust to help continue the good work that he was involved with.

He is survived by his wife, the love of his life, Terri, his daughter Leah and his son Jack.

The memorial service and celebration of his life will be held at Flye Point by the Lookout Inn in Brooklin on May 7 at 4 p.m. Feel free to bring your favorite picture of Steve and a story to share. All are welcome.

Obit- Jan Biggers_FRANKLIN – Jan Louise Devolder Biggers, 88, of Franklin, passed away on Saturday, April 23, 2016, at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital. She was born on Dec. 28, 1927, in Cambridge, Mass., daughter of the late Louis and Edna Devolder.

Jan graduated from Jamaica Plain High School in 1945. She was active in the school library club, glee club and record yearbook club, doing many of the humorous illustrations throughout the book. At the time, she said her ambition was to be a dress designer. Beneath her yearbook picture is written, “She holds the paints of life in her artistic soul.”

Her mother encouraged her to apply to Massachusetts School of Art. She was readily accepted, and four years later received her degree.

Jan knew at a young age that she wanted to marry a minister and assist him in his work. One night she ended up attending a social held in honor of the new young minister assigned to the Methodist church. She hadn’t originally been invited, but one of the debutants took ill and couldn’t attend. When the Rev. Ray E. Biggers was introduced to her, he couldn’t take his eyes off her. He spent the entire evening in her company, and a few weeks later, he proposed. They were married on Sept. 1, 1950.

Jan sang in the choir, and helped out at various church activities. She supplemented her husband’s income with her artwork. Many people remember her for her children’s book, “The Big Little Kitty,” which was published by Whitman Publishing Co. in 1953. She also had a coloring book published, and had worked at Rustcraft Greeting Cards before her marriage and subsequent move to Wisconsin.

She continued to do portraits in either pastels or oil paint for most of her life. It was only in the last year that her eyesight had deteriorated to the point that she stopped doing portraits and switched to landscapes. Perhaps the last portrait she did was for her daughter Lorelei, running her dog sled team across the snow with her granddaughter on the sled and her husband, Alan, mushing in the background.

Jan enjoyed people. Wherever she went, she made lifelong friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Edna Devolder, her sisters Elizabeth Scarlatos and Mary Billings, brother-in-law Anthony Scarlatos, nephew Christopher Billings, and grandson Adam Sieja and great-granddaughter Autumn Stienmetz.

Jan is survived by her five children: Sterling (Elterine) Biggers, Steven Biggers, Liesa (Frenchy) Stienmetz, Lorelei (Alan) Sieja, and Lennore Black, nine grandchildren: Kate (Temo) Zamudio, Tamara (Christopher) Richardson, Brian (Susan) Stienmetz, Daniel (Rachel) Sieja, David Stienmetz, Annika Sieja, Steven Stienmetz, Jan (Bryan) Fry, and Krysta Sieja, and 11 great-grandchildren: Brynn and Declan Fry, Ceilidh Sieja, Elliott, Amelia, and Charlie Richardson, Alan and Evelyn Stienmetz, Masie and Matthew Stienmetz, and Zenadeen Zamudio.

A memorial service will be held at Church of Our Father in Hulls Cove on Saturday, April 30, at 10 a.m. The Rev. Sue Cole will preside. Jan’s ashes will be scattered on her island on Abram’s Pond, her favorite place on Earth, alongside her mother and sisters, in a family celebration of her life, later this summer.

In lieu of flowers, monetary donations can be sent in care of Steven Biggers, and will be taken to her favorite charity, the food pantry. His address is 57 Abrams Pond Road, Franklin, ME 04634.

Obit- Jane S Zirnkilton_SEAL HARBOR – Jane Smith Zirnkilton, age 84, died of natural causes at her home in Seal Harbor on Saturday, April 30, 2016.

Josephine Jane Smith was born on April 26, 1932, in Baltimore, Md. She was the daughter of Beauchamp E. Smith and Josephine Donovan Smith. She was raised in York, Pa., where she continued to reside following her marriage to the late Frank C. Zirnkilton in 1954. Following a divorce, Mrs. Zirnkilton moved to her summer home in Seal Harbor in 1976.

Mrs. Zirnkilton attended York Collegiate Institute, the Ethel Walker School, Mt. Vernon Junior College and was graduated from Skidmore College.

In her youth, Mrs. Zirnkilton was an accomplished equestrian. After numerous riding injuries, which continued to affect Mrs. Zirnkilton throughout her life, her father encouraged her to take up sailing. Mrs. Zirnkilton began racing her Luders 16, Chinquapin, at the age of 16.

Her newfound love of sailing, coupled with her quiet, competitive drive led Mrs. Zirnkilton to early success in competitive sailing. At the age of nineteen, representing the Seal Harbor Yacht Club, she won the Women’s North American Sailing Championship, known as the “Adams Cup.” Her sailing years included many more victories. Mrs. Zirnkilton’s love of sailing and the sea would last the rest of her life. When the physical challenges of racing sailboats became limiting, she continued to spend as much time as possible on the water, traveling up and down the East Coast and the Bahamas with her Captain and companion, the late Norman Sanborn, on the Morning Star.

When not on the water, Mrs. Zirnkilton was an active volunteer in the community. While in York, she served on the White House Committee on Mental Health, the Board of Directors of the York Hospital Auxiliary, as Director of the York Hospital Fete, Christmas Seal Chairman of the York County Tuberculosis and Health Society and Vice Chairman of York Citadel Salvation Army among many other community leadership roles. After moving to Maine, Mrs. Zirnkilton was active with the Mount Desert Island Hospital, serving many years on the Board of Trustees, the Development Committee and the Hospital Auxiliary.

Mrs. Zirnkilton was a lifelong member of the Harbor Club and the Country Club of York. She was also a member of the Northeast Harbor Fleet and the Seal Harbor Yacht Club, where, to date, she is the only woman ever to have served as commodore.

Mrs. Zirnkilton was known for always asking how she could be of help to others. She will be forever remembered by her children for her unconditional love and compassion. She is survived by her three children and their spouses: Frank C. Zirnkilton, Jr. and his wife Katie (St. Davids, PA), Stephen M. Zirnkilton and his wife Stephanie (Seal Harbor, ME) and Jane Z. Rouse and her husband Tom (Timonium, MD). She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Sarah Zirnkilton, Stephen Zirnkilton Jr., Allison Rouse, Alexander Rouse, Beauchamp Zirnkilton, Heidi Zirnkilton and Peter Zirnkilton.

Memorial services will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Mount Desert Island Hospital, the Seal Harbor Village Improvement Society, the Seal Harbor Library Association, the United Church of Christ, Northeast Harbor and Seal Harbor, c/o Abby Chapel or The First Moravian Church of York, Penn.

Arrangements by Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert. Condolences may be expressed at www.jordanfernald.com.
