MANSET

J. Anthony Covino, 96, died on May 8, 2018, at his home in Manset (Southwest Harbor), surrounded by friends and family who loved him. Born on Nov. 8, 1921, in Port Chester, N.Y., he was the youngest of the six children born to Italian immigrants Matilda (Ciliberti) and Joseph A. Covino. Over the years, he was known as Anthony, Tony, Mr Covino, Uncle Anthony and Toie!

Tony was a public school principal in Ocean Township, N.J., for 30 years.

A graduate of Port Chester High School (1939), Tony attended East Stroudsburg State Teachers College (East Stroudsburg University), graduating in 1943. In February 1943, he, and many of his classmates at East Stroudsburg, were called into service. As part of Patton’s Third Army, Tony served in Austria, France, Czechoslovakia and Germany. A favorite family story occurred after the War when he was stationed in Germany. Just before Christmas in 1945, Tony organized many soldiers, even non-Catholics, to attend a Catholic Mass in nearby Augsburg. There they accomplished their secret and joyful mission: carry and drop off scores of chocolate bars for the children. Because GIs were forbidden to “fraternize” with the defeated Germans ¾ even with children ¾ giving candy away directly was against Army regulations. They left the pile of chocolates for the priest to distribute. Tony was discharged as a staff sergeant in March 1946.

Generous GI Bill benefits funded Tony’s return to school for a Master’s in Education from Teachers College at Columbia University (N.Y.). At Columbia, Tony met and fell in love with Mary Strock Robbins from Bridgeton, N.J. They married on Nov. 27, 1947. Their marriage of 57 years ended at Mary’s death in 2005.

Tony taught social studies in White Plains, N.Y., and Riverside, N.J., and, in 1952, he became principal of the Wanamassa (N.J.) School. Mary and Tony moved to Wanamassa with their very young children, Susan and John. In 1958, the new Ocean Township School opened. Tony became the first principal, leading the school until his retirement in 1982. Throughout his career in Ocean Township, Mr. Covino’s hard work, integrity, enthusiastic school spirit, sense of humor and love for children endeared him to generations of students, parents and teachers. He continually urged students to “do the extra step” and to consider Ocean Township School “the best school in the United States.” Mr. Covino’s fairness was legendary. He told his students: “Anything you see me do, you can do.” More than one student waited in vain to see if Mr. Covino would ever walk on the grass or chew gum in school ¾ both forbidden activities! Former students fondly remember Mr. Covino’s insistence that they tell the truth about misdeeds, followed by his giving them a second chance. At his retirement in 1982, the library at the Ocean Township School was named “the J. Anthony Covino Library.”

Tony’s passion never wavered about the importance of public schools to our democratic way of life. He believed that public education was the backbone of our democracy and, in its best incarnation, helped level the playing field for all students. He advocated tuition-free public colleges and universities. Tony always said that society benefits when we all have a good education.

Tony was devoted to his large extended family. He took great pride in his Italian heritage and loved when we could all be together. Tony had many stories of the sacrifices, hard work, love and loyalty that kept his family together during the Great Depression.

A lifelong Democrat, he marched in a parade at the age of 7, carrying a sign for presidential candidate Al Smith. Tony often spoke of the New Deal WPA program that provided a job for his out-of-work father and millions of others. A union man, Tony was instrumental in the negotiations that resulted in Ocean Township educators receiving medical insurance as part of their benefits. He helped organize the Ocean Township Principals Association. Throughout his 36 years of retirement Tony received his pension and continued to receive medical and dental insurance. Tony was grateful for the NJEA, the strong educators’ associations in New Jersey, which negotiated these benefits. Always seeing the big picture, Tony thought EVERYONE should have the same benefits and supported universal health care.

During their retirement years, Mary and Tony enjoyed traveling with family and friends, attending family celebrations, and most of all being with their wonderful grandchildren. Moie and Toie played whiffle ball, Candyland, card games and puzzles and took them to ball games and on outings. They eagerly attended their grandchildren’s many, many performances and ball games, and were always ready for chauffeur duties. Moie and Toie were grandparents “EXTRAORDINAIRE.”

In 2003, Tony and Mary left New Jersey and moved to Southwest Harbor to be closer to Susan and her family. They had spent many years coming to Southwest Harbor, often for months at a time. After their move, frequent visits by family and friends gave them many opportunities to show off their beautiful Island. Tony and Mary stayed in contact with many friends and teachers from their 52 years in New Jersey, all of whom remembered them with fondness.

After Mary’s death, new joys came Toie’s way with the arrival of great-grandchildren Russell, Gwyneth, Flora and Owen. Toie was always so proud of his family!

Tony enjoyed meeting and getting to know new people, including the friends of his children and grandchildren. And they enjoyed knowing him. Tony met everyone with an open heart. One recent acquaintance described him as having a “magnetic” personality; another said Tony was the finest person he’d ever met.

Tony was predeceased by his adored wife, Mary, and his wonderful siblings Al, Evelyn, Pete, Vinny and Nick; and his niece Patricia Ellen. Tony is survived by his beloved children, Susan Covino Buell (John) and John (Susan), and their children and grandchildren, Todd Buell (Brussels, Belgium), Katharine Covino Poutasse (Harvard, Mass.), Brian Covino, (East Boston, Mass.), Elisabeth Buell, (Providence, R.I.), Timothy Buell, (Bar Harbor) and Daniel Covino (Grinnell, Iowa) and Russell, Gwynnie and Flora Poutasse and Owen Covino. Uncle Anthony is also survived by his much-loved nieces and nephews and their spouses, children and grandchildren, and many cousins.

The family wishes to thank the very loving helpers who cared for our father over the last few years. Their presence enriched Toie’s life immeasurably. We are very grateful to Edie, Stacy, Judy, Bethani, Christy and Amethyst.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m., July 7, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Seawall Road, Manset. The reception for family and friends immediately follows at the Buell home, 68 Fernald Point Road, Southwest Harbor. Internment at Holy Redeemer Cemetery will be later in the day. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Tony’s name to the Harbor House Community Service Center, 329 Main St., Southwest Harbor, ME 04679 or to the “J. Anthony and Mary R. Covino Memorial  Scholarship” at Ocean Township High School (attn: Myra Siciliano), 550 West Park Ave., Oakhurst, NJ 07755.

BLUE HILL

Brian Todd Damon’s long battle ended suddenly at his home in Blue Hill on Tuesday, June 12.

Born Dec. 15, 1963, the son of Vincent and Carol Damon of Brooklin, Brian was that smiling gentle giant that everyone saw often around town in the Blue Hill area. His blond hair and hulking frame never failed to rush ahead to hold the doors for others, even as his own health made it difficult to do so. He loved to help others, and greet each person with “How are you?” and “Have a great day.” He believed fiercely that kindness was the gift we all have inside to share with others, and it was up to each of us to make the world a better place.

Brian was a jack of all trades, from his degree at WHCT in Calais for automotive, to carpentry. He worked many years at Auto Colony in Ellsworth, EBS in Blue Hill and turned carpenter till his health made it impossible nine years ago.

Brian fought each day with his family by his side, and love was what he drew strength from to continue. His family was his everything. Brian is survived by his wife of 17 years, Jennie Atherton Damon, and their children Jayce Harrison and Caitlyn Bray of Blue Hill. His ex-wife and friend Theresa Damon and sons Timothy Todd Damon and wife Nyssa Rose, now of Waterville, and Benjamin Brian Damon and wife, Laci Jaye, now of Bucksport. Beloved grandchildren, Jackson Tyler, Verity Rose, Gracelynn LeeAnn, and Penelope Jean. Brothers, Bruce Damon of Orland, Bradley Damon of Brooklin, Barry Damon and wife, Missy, of Sedgwick. Parent in law/love Paul and Vickie Atherton of Blue Hill. Brain also leaves behind several dearly beloved nieces and nephews and “adopted children,” who frequently were found by his side. A “sister of the heart” Tiffany Eaton of Deer Isle, and longtime friend Marty Creamer of Jefferson. Brian was predeceased by both mother and father, and nephew.

A celebration of life will be held June 23 at 11:30 a.m. at the Farmhhouse Inn, Blue Hill. Celebration will be potluck style. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to his son’s future care. An account is currently being established for this purpose. Please feel free to inquire.

BUFFALO, N.Y. AND MOUNT DESERT ISLAND

          David C. Dean, MD

   19 April 1931 – 21 May 2018

Dr. David Campbell Dean was a beloved doctor, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and great-uncle. In all of the many roles he held and to all he served, he brought love, joy and curiosity. He not only wished for patients, family members and strangers he encountered to be healthy, but also actively helped them heal through lively conversation. A question master, Dr. Dean sparked life in those he spoke with, helping them realize that their opinions, their stories, and their lives mattered.

Dr. Dean had Maine in his DNA. Born in Buffalo, N.Y., to parents from Maine (mother Eleanor from Guilford and father Archibald from Portland), Maine held a special place in his heart. He followed his father’s footsteps and graduated from Bowdoin College (1952) and on to medical school at Johns Hopkins (1956).

The summer before he graduated from medical school, he found the perfect woman, Jean Lord Butler. Daughter and stepdaughter of prominent physicians, she was born and raised in Bangor. They met when friends of their parents asked ‘the Deans’ to look out for Jean when she came to Buffalo (what she then thought was the end of the Earth) for occupational therapy training the summer of 1955. They were engaged within weeks and married by the time David graduated in June.

They visited Jean’s parents (Dr. and Mrs. James Howard Means) at their summer home on Isle au Haut, but when the family got larger and the trip to Isle au Haut more challenging, Mrs. Means sold her Bangor home and bought the family summer home on the Shore Road in Manset (Southwest Harbor) in 1964. And, so began the 50-plus-year love affair with Mount Desert Island.

Dr. Dean embraced every inch of the area. He met lifelong friends and supported the community (patron of Acadia Repertory Theatre, Camp Beech Cliff, Friends of Acadia, Maine Seacoast Mission and more). In addition to Acadia Rep, he would regularly attend lectures at the Claremont Hotel, the Jackson Lab and College of Atlantic. He dug in to the history of the island, of the community, of the people who called the island home (summer or year round). An avid tennis player, he participated in countless Causeway Club round robins and won the “Over 100” Mixed Doubles Championship with Susy Flack in 1997 and 2000.

He loved to socialize. His tall stature made him easy to spot. His joy of life and friendly teasing nature was disarming and contagious. His favorite day of the summer was the Fourth of July — where he would get the family together to head over to the Bar Harbor Athletic Field for a day of fun (starting with the blueberry pancake breakfast, then on to the Independence Day parade, lobster races, seafood festival and craft fair). So many new people to meet! His opening line would generally be “Where are you from?” He would immediately lean in to learn more about them, and also offer up tips from the island.

What he loved most was the sea — sailing or motoring around the inner islands, lunch at Islesford Dock restaurant, touring through SWH and NEH, checking in on the various osprey nests, fishing for mackerel or bass from the mooring, or sitting on the shore for a great lobster cook out. In addition to being on the sea, he loved what could be harvested from the sea — sometimes things others would question! He would stop and pick up fresh seafood from the “little van at the head of the harbor” — and swore that eating pickled herring for breakfast would help him live longer.

Dr. Dean’s day job was as a cardiologist. He was at the forefront of preventive medicine, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of heart disease. He loved his profession and he continued to practice medicine through his last days.

From 1959 until 1961, Dr. Dean was instructor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, and in 1960, he served as a cardiology fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital under the founder of preventive cardiology, Dr. Paul Dudley White.

From 1962 to 1991, he served as chief of cardiology at the Buffalo VA Medical Center, where he built the first cath lab in 1962 and worked closely with Dr. William Chardack, Dr. Andrew Gage and Wilson Greatbatch, who developed the first successful implantable pacemaker in the world, before working as a consultant for many hospitals in the Buffalo area.

Since 1961, he served as a clinical professor of medicine and clinical professor of rehabilitation medicine at the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine. His two-year Cardiology Training Program at BVAMC turned out 60 cardiologists. He published 64 articles in refereed journals, edited the book “Interpreting ECGs, An Advanced Self-Test Guide” and gave lectures on cardiology around the world.

By his family and friends, Dr. Dean will always be remembered as an inquisitive, adventurous person who led a life full of rich conversations. He taught by example the art of inquiry: with an easy laugh, tall stature, and nodding head, he asked people questions that stretched them outside of their comfort zones while making them feel worthy of a full interview. He had an insatiable, infectious curiosity that propelled him to talk to anyone, no matter their occupation or relation to him. He knew that he had something to learn from all types of people.

David will be remembered for his keen intelligence, inquisitive nature, zest for life and love for all people. All those whose lives he touched are healthier because of him.

He leaves behind his beloved wife of 62 years, Jean (Butler), and children Bruce, Keith (Therese) and Laurie (G. James) Baird, grandchildren Jenna, Mari, Julia, Lisa Baird (Patrick Price) and Brian (Lisa) Baird, and great grandchildren Ava, Piper, Nicholas and Sophie. He was a loving brother to Sylvia (Robert) Raban and Archibald and the late Donald S Dean; loving brother-in-law to Anne Dean and Beth (George) May; also survived by many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to the Archibald and David Dean Scholarship at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, c/o Helen Kennelly, The Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine, 750 East Pratt St., 17th Floor, Baltimore, MD 21202.

A celebration of life will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, July 5, 2018 at the Causeway Club “Red Barn,” 10 Fernald Point Road, Southwest Harbor, ME 04679.

STEUBEN

Roberta (Dutton) Sawyer, 93, of Steuben died suddenly on June 20, 2018, at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Roberta was born on May 16, 1925, the only child of Phillip S. Dutton and Marion (Davis) Dutton of Steuben. Roberta traced her Dutton and Shaw ancestors in America back to the early 1600s and was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. A brief first marriage to Merton Leigh “Bud” Pottle ended in divorce. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 58 years, William F. “Billy” Sawyer of Milbridge, and is survived by her faithful dog Mia.

Roberta grew up in the village of Steuben. As a teenager, she moved to Machias and graduated from Machias High School. After high school, she spent a year at Washington State Normal School. Discovering she didn’t like teaching, she transferred to Maine School of Commerce (later Husson University), where she studied stenography. She worked as an executive secretary in Portland and Milbridge and managed the rental properties and businesses she owned with her husband. The last year and a half of her life she was lovingly cared for by the staff at Dirigo Pines in Orono.

Roberta was one of a kind. She was a fiercely independent and determined Down Easter with a soft spot for those who were struggling; scrupulous about paying her own way and refusing help while quietly supporting those in need; a notorious beauty who didn’t believe in spending money, especially on herself, but donated to numerous charities; possessed of a wonderfully dry and sometimes biting wit; gracious but not one to suffer fools; a good citizen who didn’t believe in seatbelts or speed limits; an intensely private person who loved partner dancing; a patriot and a political conservative. She was elegant, dignified and a lot of fun. She will be greatly missed by her friends and relatives, including Sally Ward of Machias, Bonnie Beck of Portland and the entire Dutton family.

A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2018, at the Henry D. Moore Parish House, 22 Village Road, Steuben. Interment will be in the Steuben Village Cemetery immediately following the service. Condolences to the family may be expressed at BrookingsSmith.com.

PENOBSOT

Paul Grew Birdsall was born in Massachusetts to Paul M. Birdsall and Helen Grew Birdsall on June 4, 1927. He skied, skated and loved the outdoors. He was schooled at Phillips Exeter Academy then on to Harvard University, where he graduated with a master’s in English. He served in Korea, then came home, traveling to France, where he met his incredible wife-to-be, Mollie Weare Borden. They had two sons, living in Connecticut and teaching high school until 1972 when they moved to Penobscot. They bought an old farm; this is where they created Horsepower Farm. Farming with horses was his peace; he taught over 150 apprentices at Horsepower Farm over 45 years of farming. There he joined MOFGA, the Hancock County Soil and Water Commission and Maine Farmland Trust. He started Blue Hill Heritage Trust with an easement of his own farm so it would stay farmland forever.

His beloved wife, Mollie, passed in 2000. Paul continued his work with farming until his own passing on June 12, 2018. He leaves Nathaniel and Jeanne, Andrew and Donna, their children and grandchildren. There will be a celebration of his life and journey July 7 at Horsepower Farm from 2 to 4 p.m.
