ELLSWORTH

Jonathan Tatum Hayes, the much-loved first child of Anne and Leonidas Hayes, died in his sleep at his home in Ellsworth on May 5, 2018, with his brother and sister-in-law by his side. He was 64 years old and had Down syndrome.

Born in Philadelphia, Pa., on June 19, 1953, Jon was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his brother Bob, (Chris Rusnov), his sisters Loie (Julie Ogletree) of Boston, Mass., Julie (Norm Duphily) of Auburn, Susie (Tom Cappiello) of Palmer, Alaska, and Sarah (Mark Dehler), of Ottawa, Ontario, as well as 10 nephews and nieces, and his aunt Marguerite Cackley of Voorheesville, N.Y.

A resident of Ellsworth for 47 years, Jon was a proud community member who loved socializing, sharing a big smile and a strong handshake with people he met and offering bear hugs to closer acquaintances, friends and family. Throughout his adult life Jon enjoyed music, learning to read with many dedicated tutors, competing in Special Olympics, celebrating milestones with family and friends and serving as a greeter and usher at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

Jon grew up with his five younger siblings in Chester Springs, Pa., a small rural community near Philadelphia. Jon, along with his siblings, attended the Charlestown Playhouse, a parent co-op preschool dedicated to child-centered learning. His parents countered the common advice of that era to institutionalize individuals with intellectual disabilities and instead supported Jon in being welcomed and “mainstreamed” within his early learning environments and community activities.

Shortly following the family’s move to Ellsworth from Pennsylvania in 1971, Anne worked with other parents in the region to start swimming lessons for disabled children. In 1974, the group worked to establish a sheltered workshop in Otter Creek, where Jon and a number of other adults with intellectual disabilities found employment building an assortment of wood-based products, and formed lifelong friendships. The workshop would go on to support the development of Downeast Horizons. Through Downeast Horizons Jon also worked at a variety of establishments within Ellsworth including many years at The Ellsworth American.

Jon will be remembered by the Ellsworth community for his smile and enthusiasm, his many accomplishments at Special Olympics, impersonating his favorite television program characters effectively to elicit laughs, and finding a new book or treasured item during a visit to the thrift store or a yard sale.

Jon’s was fortunate to have had many loving caretakers supporting him and his roommate in his living arrangements with Downeast Horizons. As a family we offer special thanks to all those involved in his care.

A celebration of Jon’s life will take place on Saturday, July 28, 2018, at 2 p.m. at Jordan-Fernald 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Jon’s memory may be made to Downeast Horizons, 77 Union St., Ellsworth, ME 04605.

JONESBORO

Natalie E. Smith of Jonesboro passed away on July 5, 2018, at Courtland Living Center in Ellsworth. Born on Nov. 17, 1918, to Anna White Smith and Ozias Smith, she was a lifelong resident of Jonseboro. Natalie graduated from the Bangor Maine School of Commerce 1939. She worked for the Department of Human Services in Machias for 38 years, retiring in 1983.

Natalie was a hard-working woman, spending her free time taking care of her blueberry lands (raking into her 70s). She enjoyed traveling in her free time with family and friends (from the Jersey Shore in the 1950s to putting her feet in the Pacific at the age of 81).

She enjoyed telling tales of her childhood with her siblings and friends — of walking to school and back home for lunch. Playing in the barn and attending dances. Nannie said they never had a lot of money, but they always had a good time!

Nannie was an avid Red Sox fan and after a particularly bad game she was quoted as saying “I hired them and then I fired them.” She was known for her sense of humor, quick wit and singing a tune. She was a member of the Jonesboro Union Church and the church auxiliary. Natalie made many friends throughout her 99 years and will be greatly missed.

Natalie is survived by her daughter Jane and son-in-law Kenneth Varney of Bangor. Three grandchildren Teresa and her husband, Gary Blaschke, of Standish. Richard Varney of Dedham. Jennifer and her husband, Karl Liebermann, of Holliston, Mass. Four special great grandchildren Dylan Barnes, Anna Blaschke and Sophia and Max Liebermann.

She was predeceased by her siblings, Robert, Alice and Ellis. Natalie always looked forward to spending time with them and their families.

A special thank you to the staff of Courtland Living Center for taking great care of Nannie for the past nine years and making it feel like home to her. We know you’ll miss her as much as we will.

We’ll leave you with a final thought from Nannie: “It’s not the cough that carries you off, it’s the coffin they carry you off in.”  We love you a “bushel and a peck” Nannie!

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 4, 2018, at 1 p.m. in the Forrest Hill Cemetery in Jonesboro with Pastor David Gardner officiating. Arrangements are under the direction and care of Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, Ellsworth.

He graduated from UMass-Amherst, entered a management program at a large bank but realized corporate life was not for him, and then began work at the Bar Harbor Golf Course. He became the general manager and course superintendent, working there for 35 years. He was well known throughout the Trenton-Ellsworth area as well as the Maine golf community.

Charlie worked hard, played hard and wasn’t the easiest boss, but the members, customers and employees liked and respected him. To say he will be missed would be a colossal understatement. He had many special friends there. He was easy to be around (usually), had a quiet generous side, and was beloved by everyone who got to know him. He had a great way with kids and was always the most popular uncle at the family Christmas party. He loved dogs and there was always one or more riding around the golf course with him, from King to Oscar and Felix.

In recent years, Charlie’s life changed. He had a bitter battle with throat cancer that almost cost him his life and took two years to recover from. After that he found great happiness with Ann Scribner, his loving partner to whom we are very grateful.

Charlie was predeceased by his father, Paul Crowley Sr. He leaves his mother, Amelia, of Weymouth; his brother Paul and wife, Delia, and daughter Cara of Falmouth, his brother Ronald and son Timothy and daughter Jacquelin of Delaware, his brother Richard and daughter Cindy and son Douglas of Weymouth; his brother Lawrence and wife, Jeanne, and daughters Amanda and Lindsey of Weymouth; his brother Thomas and wife Judy and daughters Rachel, Katie and Nicole of Southborough; and Ann Scribner of Trenton.

A wake will be held Friday, July 20, 2018, from 4 to 8 at McDonald-Keohane Funeral Home on Sea Street in North Weymouth, Mass., with a funeral mass on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church in Weymouth. A burial will follow at Blue Hill Cemetery in Braintree.

Our friends from the Ellsworth area are very welcome to attend, but given the distance and expense involved, we will also hold a memorial service in Ellsworth in August or September to be announced within a few weeks.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 10 Brookline Place, West 6th Floor, Brookline, MA 02445 would be greatly appreciated.

Condolences may be expressed at www.jordanfernald.com.
