SEDGWICK

Daphne Rosenzweig Hinchcliffe passed away on Sunday, May 27, 2018, at her home. She was born in Israel, immigrated with her family to New York and then to San Diego in 1952.

She received a degree from UC-Berkeley in the turbulent ’60s, developing a profound sense of social and moral consciousness. Daphne went on to graduate school, obtaining a degree in physical therapy, with a specialty in pediatric physical therapy. She spent most of her professional life working with infants and children with a variety of physical disabilities. She traveled extensively developing her skills and teaching them to others.

Daphne met her late husband in Maine in 1972 while attending a physical therapy workshop. She and Tom moved to Maryland, where Daphne taught at the University of Maryland Medical School. After a few years she convinced Tom to pack his woodworking tools and drove to San Diego County to be close to her family. After several years they returned to Maine, where they settled.

Daphne and Tom were avid collectors of early Americana. They became well known for their beautiful farm tables that Tom built from antique wood. Daphne ran the business that they opened and they became well known with customers and friends all over the country. As much as Daphne was a California girl in spirit, her heart and soul were in Maine to the very end.

Daphne was a trusted professional, a deeply caring person and a profoundly devoted mate and friend. Those left behind will miss her smile, spirit and contagious laughter. However, the memories will be cherished forever. She made a positive impact on all who were lucky to know her.

She is survived by her brother Steve Rosenzweig and his spouse, Joan, of Potomac, Md.; her stepdaughter, Barbara Hinchcliffe, of Everett, Wash. She was predeceased by her spouse, Thomas Charles Hinchcliffe, and her parents, Ray and Leo Rosenzweig.

Burial for Daphne and Tom was held on June 1, 2018, at Mt. Rest Cemetery, Brooksville. A celebration of life will be held on July 15, 2018.

Donations in her memory may be made to Hospice Volunteers of Hancock County, 14 McKenzie Ave, Ellsworth, ME 04605 or Tree of Life Food Pantry, 23 South St., Blue Hill, ME 04614.

Condolences may be expressed at www.jordanfernald.com.

Helen Seabury

LONGMEADOW, MASS.

Helen Hamor Seabury, 94, died on Nov. 13, 2017, in the comfort of her home in Longmeadow, Mass., with her caring family beside her. She was born in Bar Harbor on May 6, 1923, to Katherine Perry and Leslie I. Hamor.

Her father was road commissioner for the town of Bar Harbor for 35 years and a call man for the Fire Department and her mother was active in the community with the church guild at St. Saviour’s and the Garden Club and Union Rebekah Lodge.

Helen adored her parents and loved talking about the beautiful memories of her childhood growing up in her home at 2 Hamor Place (off Pleasant Street), where there was always a buzz of activity going on. She was able to share these joyful times with her younger brother Hoyt and her older sister Barbara, who all went to school together at the Emerson School which was then located directly behind the fence in their backyard.

Both Helen and Barbara were in the same grade and graduated in the Class of 1940 from Bar Harbor High School.

Their grandfather Millard, who they called Pa, also lived with them when they were growing up. He had been the road commissioner before Leslie at a time when Bar Harbor was experiencing so much growth from the Hotel Era boom and the Summer Colony. Millard’s father, Richard Hamor, and Millard’s older brother, Elihu, who were owners of the Grand Central Hotel at the time, were also road builders. They supervised the clearing of the route of the cog railway and soon after, a new and improved carriage road up Green Mountain that would allow visitors to reach the summit in a buckboard as an alternative to taking the cog railroad. Richard had built the first house atop Green Mountain, which was used by the U.S. Coast Survey and later his brother-in-law, Daniel Brewer, built a new Summit House that the Brewer family ran as a hotel during the cog railroad era. Richard was one of 13 children of David and Experience Thompson Hamor. David Hamor was of the first to settle in Eden having arrived at Hulls Cove with his parents, John and Mary Hamor, in 1768.

Helen left Bar Harbor to attend the Lesley School in Cambridge, Mass., and bring up a family in Longmeadow. She was a real estate broker in greater Springfield for more than 50 years. She was active in the community, rearing four sons and attending events from music and sports to church and social. She met so many new friends in business and pleasure who all fell in love with her Downeast humor and character. In her heart, Bar Harbor was her real home. She returned every summer with her new family to spend time and vacation with her beloved parents Mumma and Daddy as she would call them, Nana and Gramp to the kids. When they passed on, she built a home here on Shannon Road, just a stone’s throw away from the house she grew up in. She spent the summers here for the last 20 years of her life, where a steady flow of old friends and close kin would drop by. Her brother Hoyt was one who made regular visits always wanting to offer a helping hand.

Helen made many new friends in her golden years, especially through her love for the game of bridge. She played in the Asticou Bridge League in NEH and also the Ellsworth Duplicate Bridge League and it was her favorite thing to do. Her second favorite thing was attending the annual Fourth of July party at the Schoeders, where every year she would be introduced as Aunt Helen to some new unexpected guest. They instantly thought she was the “cat’s meow.” They fell in love with her quick wit and style. She was always wearing the right hat for the occasion. As Michael Povich announced to her bridge-playing friends, Helen may have been 94 years old but she left us much too soon.

In addition to her parents, Helen was predeceased by her sister, Barbara Coston and her husband, Paul; her brother, Hoyt Hamor, and his wife, Nancy, their children Julie and Charles Hamor, and her daughter-in-law, Karen Bishop Seabury.  She leaves her four sons, Hoyt , her caregiver with whom she lived, his twin brother, Scott and his wife. Linda, Richard and his partner, Kari Divito, and Leland and his wife, Donna. She also leaves her grandchildren, Anne Seabury Martin and her husband Ryan, Chelsea Seabury Smith and her husband, Kevin, Tyler, Austin and Kyle Seabury, Nicholas and Alicia Divito; and her great-granddaughers, Kinsley Smith and Maren Martin. She also leaves her nieces, Katherine Hamor, Barbara Hamor Stoneman, Helen Coston Witham and Mary Jane Coston Whitney; and her nephew, Paul Coston Jr.

There will be a memorial celebration planned for both Helen and her brother Hoyt together as they both joined each other in Heaven just a week apart back in November. A reception is scheduled on Saturday, July 14, from 2 to 4 in the afternoon at the Kebo Valley clubhouse. Committal services are planned earlier in the day for Helen at Hillside Cemetery in Hulls Cove, and for Hoyt at Ledgelawn Cemetery with the Rev. John Allison of the Church of Our Father in Hulls Cove officiating.

ELLSWORTH AND GOULDSBORO

Barbara Bryce Herrington died peacefully on Monday, June 4, surrounded by her family. She was born on April 9, 1932, in South Portland, to Clara (Winnie) Davis and Charles Bryce.

Barb was predeceased by her loving husband, Charles (Ray) Herrington, originally from Oklahoma. Barb and Ray met in Oklahoma, where Barb was serving in the Air Force and Ray was attending university. They married on July 4, 1952, and returned to Maine in 1955.

Barb and Ray raised four sons in Orono. Barb was active in the Church of Universal Fellowship and the American Field Service. In 1976-1977, the family hosted a Chilean exchange student, Rene Bastias. He has become a part of the family and Barb referred to him as her fifth son.

The love and support for her sons was remarkable. She was the heart of the family. In tight times she kept the family organized, engaged and within budget. A great shopper and cook, Barb always served a delicious meal as the family sat down together at the kitchen table.

Barb was genuinely interested in the lives of friends and family — young and old would be seen through the picture window having coffee with Barb. This easy connection with people continued throughout her life. Her open, giving nature and warm smile endeared her in the hearts of many and those who met her will miss her.

Making puzzles, playing cards and working on crafts were activities Barb enjoyed with the companionship of others. She looked forward to her annual trips to Florida to visit family and lifelong best friend Lois Adams. Barb enjoyed the community of friends made at Friends in Action and Leonard Lake Senior Housing.

Barb was preceded in death by her brothers Charles (Chuck) Bryce of Massachusetts and Elliott Bryce of Maine.
