STONINGTON

Wayne “Butch” Ciomei, 59, died unexpectedly on Friday, May 18, 2018, while doing what he loved — being on the ocean. Butch was a lifelong lobsterman who also enjoyed scalloping during the winter months and halibut fishing each spring.

Butch was known as a hard-working, honest, thoughtful, generous man who touched everyone’s lives that he met. So many say that they were blessed to have known him.

Butch met the love of his life, Shari, in high school and they were married in 1982 and had a beautiful life together for 36 years. They had three wonderful children, who also developed a love for lobstering, son Seth with fiancée Sara Larrabee and son Lance and his wife, Tabitha, and a daughter, Chelsea along with her spouse Tyler Torrey. Butch’s greatest pride was his 11 grandchildren, Tristan, Taylor, Brantley, Hunter, Haven, Aliyah, Colton, Lincoln, Kinsley, Easton and Essie. He was an amazing grandfather who could always be seen spending many special times with each of them and was greatly adored by all.

He enjoyed serving on the board of directors of the Stonington Lobster Co-op for many years, the same co-op where his grandfather, Aldo Ciomei, was a past manager. He had many fellow lobstermen who shared a special bond with him and each would always be there to help each other out.

Recently one of his proudest accomplishments was earning his “captain’s license,” which he put in many long hours studying for.

In the past, he has also enjoyed being a volunteer for the Stonington Fire Department, taking karate lessons with his sons, watching his daughter play tennis, going musseling, clamming, making special wooden furniture, gardening, and hunting and taking special trips to Siesta Key beach with his wife and family.

He is survived by his five brothers, Clayton, Glen, Kurt, Stephen, Thomas and a sister, Stacey and their families. His mother and father-in-law, Robert and Colleen Burgess who loved him and thought of him as a son. His sisters-in-law, Becky, Pam and brother-in-law Brian along with each of their families also loved and will cherish the many happy and wonderful memories of special times they all shared through the years.

He was predeceased by his parents, Edrie and Marshall “Wayne” Ciomei, grandparents, Alfred and Alice Joyce, and Aldo and Essie Ciomei, all of whom were very special to him.

His favorite song was “Humble and Kind” by Tim McGraw, which is how he chose to live his life. We find peace in knowing that he is with his beloved grandfather, Aldo Ciomei, who he shared a special bond with.

The memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 27, at the Deer Isle-Stonington High School Gym located at 251 N Deer Isle Road, Deer Isle, ME 04627 at 2 p.m.

Flowers may be sent to Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Homes, 215 Main St., Ellsworth, ME 04605.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to The Island Fishermen’s Wives scholarship program or Memorial Ambulance Corps.

BRUNSWICK

Joan Elizabeth (Pankratz) Crothers died in the early morning hours, March 27, 2018, after having suffered a massive stroke on March 18. She was born April 15, 1931, in Toledo, Ohio, the eldest child of Margaret (Hone) Pankratz and Howard Gustav Pankratz.

After graduating from Ottawa Hills High School in 1949, she enrolled in Oberlin College, Class of 1953. While at Oberlin, she wrote for The Oberlin Review and the college’s literary magazine at the time, Yeoman. She continued to publish poems in literary journals intermittently and maintained a deep interest in reading and writing poetry throughout her life.

During her time at Oberlin, she met Charles Gordon Crothers and his BSA 650 “Golden Flash” motorcycle. Jumping on the back, they headed east, marrying in November 1953 and settling in the greater Boston area. Together they had four children, raising them in Lexington, Mass., and during the summers Downeast in Sorrento.

Once accused of being “too fascinating,” Joan was that and more. A champion of the underdog or the outsider, she ran for town office, campaigned for clean air and water legislation, wrote articles for the Lexington Minuteman and fiercely supported her children’s varied interests in sports, theater, architecture, engineering, music and sailing.

After her divorce she settled in Brunswick in 1987, maintaining an almost equidistant residence between old ties in Lexington and the family summer house on Frenchman Bay. She was an anchor to her children, grandchildren and the many lifelong friends and acquaintances who were drawn to her.

She is survived by her sister, Nancy (Pankratz) Ames of Evanston, Ill., children Bronwen Crothers, of Brunswick, Jock Crothers (Lisa Heyward) of Sorrento, Alicia Crothers Harrison (Todd Harrison) of Cambridge, Mass., daughter-in-law, Marianne Lagerklint of Stockholm, Sweden. Five grandchildren, Brenna Crothers (Jay) Magill, Conlan Crothers, Helena Crothers-Villers, Miles Harrison and Ross Harrison. Her youngest son, Bronson Crothers, predeceased her.

A celebration of her life will be held in Sorrento in early July.

Those wishing to make a donation in her memory, please consider: Frenchman Bay Conservancy, P.O. Box 150, Hancock, ME 04640. http://frenchmanbay.org.

Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.FuneralAlternatives.net. Arrangements are under the care of Funeral Alternatives, Brunswick.

DOVER, N.H.

Harvard Philip Fowler (known as H. Philip Fowler or Phil to friends) died peacefully of natural causes May 23, 2018, in Boston, Mass., at the age of 83. Phil was born in Brooksville, March 1, 1935, to Nina and Victor Fowler. Phil was told late in life, did research and came to believe that Ralph Easton of Deer Isle was his father.

Phil is survived by: siblings -Carol Aberzik, Florida/Maine, Clara Gray, Maine, Linda Searles, Maine, David Fowler, Maine; ex-wife – Jane Edwards, Maine; sons – Doug Fowler, New York, Paul Fowler, Massachusetts; grandson – Quinton Fowler, Maine; and many nieces and nephews.

He lived all of his young life on the coast of Maine with trips that he spoke of with fond memory to his aunts occasionally in the summer. He attended the University of Maine at Orono and graduated with a master’s degree in education.

An educator his whole life, Phil taught all over the United States: starting in Aroostook County, and Scarborough, and spent many years as a well-known guidance counselor in Auburn, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire and Arizona.

Phil decided in his 40s that his health would benefit from the dry climate of the Southwest, so he picked up his belongings, drove west and started a new life. He loved being in Tucson and seeing the Catalina Mountains from his home each day and made many valuable and lasting friendships in the area.

Phil specifically asked for no services and that people celebrate his memory and life rather than mourn his death. If anyone wants to send flowers, please use that money to donate to an educational fund of your choice.

GOULDSBORO / FRANKLIN

Robert Archibald Maclean, 84, lately of Gouldsboro, passed away at home on Memorial Day, May 28, 2018, surrounded by his family. Bob was born in Chester, Conn., on June 22, 1933. He was raised by Archie and Ruth Maclean in Essex, Conn., alongside his sisters and brother, Helen, Marge and Tom, who all predecease him. A proud member of Clan Maclean, Bob lived by the Maclean motto, “Virtue Mine Honor.” He worked hard all his life, retiring as service manager from Saybrook Oil in Old Saybrook, Conn., to live in Franklin. He happily puttered, whistling and singing all around his home, aptly dubbed The Spread, for the last 29 years.

Bob served his country during the Korean War then came home and married his sweetheart, Judith Ann, on July 23, 1955, and spent the next 61 years building a life and a family together. Family was everything to Bob. He leaves behind his four children, Kevin, Tracy, Heather and Cameron; five grandchildren, Lanicka, Brendan, Lauren, Hilary and Phoebe; and seven great-grandchildren, Jade, Emma, Jakob, Florence, Ashlin, Roman and Ayla.

Bob was a great lover of music. Having mastered the search feature on YouTube, he listened to country, bluegrass and folk music every day. He passed many happy, nostalgic hours traipsing down memory lane telling us stories about his life and memories. He will be remembered for his generous nature, jovial demeanor and his friendly expression.

“I fly a starship across the Universe divide, and when I reach the other side, I’ll find a place to rest my spirit if I can. Perhaps I may become a highwayman again, or I may simply be a single drop of rain, but I will remain and I’ll be back again and again and again and again and again.” Jimmie Webb.

In lieu of flowers, please live with a song in your heart, laugh with your family and friends and remember that the best of love never ends. The Maclean family will have a private memorial service.

PENOBSCOT

Richard Daniel Vanasse died peacefully in Blue Hill on May 9, 2018, one month shy of his 94th birthday.

Born on June 9, 1924, in Omaha, Neb., Richard was the son of Alcide Vanasse and Mildred Grace Brown. While he was a young boy, the family moved to Worcester, Mass., where he graduated from South High School in 1942.

After graduation, he became a naval aviation cadet and was commissioned as an ensign in the United States Naval Reserve in September 1944. During World War II, Ensign Vanasse served as a fighter-bomber pilot with the U.S. Pacific Fleet.

He attended Boston University from 1946 until 1948 when he returned to Navy Reserve Service as a lieutenant (junior grade). In 1951, he was promoted to lieutenant. During the Korean War, Lt. Vanasse flew F4-U Corsair fighter-bombers off the USS Boxer aircraft carrier and earned an air medal and two gold stars for combat service. He remained with the Naval Reserve until 1957.

He went to work for Eastern Airlines as a co-pilot and flight engineer in June 1957. Promoted to captain in July 1968, he remained with Eastern until his retirement on June 9, 1984. In 1970, Capt. Vanasse moved to Carversville, in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where on Oct. 19, 1974, he married Anne Black Philbrick, whom he met while fox hunting on his favorite horse, Chester. In addition to a love of horses, Anne and Dick shared a love of friends, family, current events, reading, gourmet cooking, and wintering in St. Maarten in the Caribbean Islands. In the early 1980s, Dick and Anne built a house in Ottsville, a rural community in Bucks County.

In 1992, they moved to Penobscot, where they built another house with attached barn for Anne’s horse and Chester. Dick was a longtime member of the Castine Men’s Club and especially loved his “Vespers” group, which met each Friday at his home. He continued to winter in St. Maarten even after Anne’s death in 1999, missing this last winter only because Hurricane Irma’s damage made it impractical.

Dick is survived by his stepchildren Bill Philbrick (and Nancy Brucker), Kathy Philbrick-Gates (and Skip Gates) and Judy Philbrick Elliston (and Keith Elliston); and step-grandchildren Sam Gates, Jasmine Gates, Kendra Elliston and Conor Elliston. He was predeceased by hisparents, Mildred and Alcide; his wife, Anne; and his step-grandson, Will Gates.

The family is especially grateful to Dr. Ronald Prokopius and his fellow physicians, nurses and staff at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital for their efforts, care, and dedication during Dick’s final days which they performed with great kindness and compassion.

Dick will be interred next to Anne at Sandy Point in a private service. A celebration of his life will be scheduled for friends and family later this summer.

Arrangements are under the care of Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite veterans’ support group.
