WINTHROP

Dorothy J. MacDonald Shoppe, 90, passed away on April 24, 2018, following an extended residence at Heritage Rehabilitation and Living Center.

Dot, as she liked to be called, was born on March 15, 1928, the daughter of John H. and Marjorie E. MacDonald.

She lived in West Bridgewater, Mass. She graduated from Howard High School, where she played “old rules” girls’ basketball. Following graduation she worked for a time for Western Union. One of her most memorable experiences was transmitting details of the Great Fire of 1947, referred to as “The Year Maine Burned.” It was during this time that she met and later married Charles C. Shoppe in 1949. They moved around for several years in an Airstream trailer as part of Charlie’s work for Maine Central RR, later settling in Franklin.

Dot was a huge Red Sox fan. If she was watching a game — you did not talk! She enjoyed playing card games, reading and crossword puzzles. She also loved several dogs over the years. Dog visitation day at Heritage was always a favorite.

She is survived by her brother John H. MacDonald Jr. (Marian) of West Bridgewater, her daughter Charlene (Jim) Clark of Winthrop and her sons John (Cindy) Shoppe of Lamoine and Craig (Wendy) Shoppe of Winthrop. Her granddaughters, Kame (Tom) McAuliffe, Jaime (Frank) Carnucci, Tiffani Shoppe, Teryn (Adam) Hanrahan and grandson, Cody Shoppe. She also has six great-grandchildren, Nico Carnucci, Aysa Carnucci, Maggie McAuliffe, Seamus McAuliffe, Findlay McAuliffe and Kylie Pickard. Baby Hanrahan is due in June.

She was predeceased by her parents and her husband.

At Dot’s request, there will be no funeral services. A private remembrance will be held in the fall in West Bridgewater.

Arrangements are in the care of Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop, ME 04364. Memories, condolences, photos and videos may be shared with the family on the obituary page of our website at www.khrfuneralhomes.com.

SEDGWICK

08/09/1933 – 04/21/2018

Thomas Charles Hinchcliffe passed away peacefully in his sleep. He is survived by his loving wife, partner and companion of 45 years, Daphne; his daughter, Barbara Hinchcliffe, of Everett, Wash.; his sister, Jane Hinchcliffe and her spouse, Gerald Morneau, of Torrington, Conn.; his brother-in-law and spouse, Stephen and Joan Rosenzweig, of Potomac, Md.; his sister-in-law Elaine Hinchcliffe; and his nephews, niece, and great-nieces, all of Connecticut. He was predeceased by his parents, Wilhelm and Nellie Hinchcliffe; his brother, John Hinchcliffe; and his son, Bryan Hinchcliffe.

After high school, Tom served in the Army in Korea, and when he returned home he attended the University of Connecticut, with a major in literature, a subject for which he had a real love. His true passion, though, from the time he was a young boy, was building — building houses, boats, furniture, bird carvings and wood-working of all sorts, using skills that he learned at the feet of his grandfather.

Another passion from a young age was art and antiques. He was always bringing home some treasured find. He met Daphne in 1972 when they each moved to Maine. They partnered over the years in his building projects and treasure-seeking. The love of the hunt overtook them to the point where they had to open a shop, so that they could sell antiques and continue hunting for more. Tom became well known in the antique world of Maine, and was a member of the Maine Antique Dealers Association. He also became well-known for the beautiful farm tables that he built from antique boards, for which he was always on the hunt.

When not antiquing or building, he loved to work in the woods — to be outdoors and walk in the woods and observe animal life was a special treat.

No services will be held at this time, but a celebration of Tom’s life will be held in mid-July. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tree of Life Food Pantry, 23 South St., Blue Hill, ME 04614 or Blue Hill Heritage Trust, P.O. Box 222, Blue Hill, ME 04614.

Arrangements by Jordan-Fernald, 49 Main St., Blue Hill.

LAMOINE

Marilyn Rosebrook Parkinson, born on the beautiful coast of Maine Oct. 8, 1929, passed gently on her journey the afternoon of May 11, 2018. Marilyn and her family moved from Maine when she was a young teenager. Marilyn was predeceased by her parents, Bertha and Willard Rosebrook. Later she and her husband raised five children in Manchester, Conn., later retiring to Lamoine to live in a log home the entire family had a part in building.

Beautiful Marilyn was the loving wife of William Henry Parkinson (deceased May 17, 2013) and a wonderful mother to William Parkinson Jr. and friend Kathleen Veilleux, Marilyn Thrall and husband, Roger, Donald Parkinson and wife, Pamela, Joanne Parkinson and fiancé John Brundage, Debra Parkinson and husband, Ed Zatursky.

A special person makes an exceptional grandparent and Marilyn was so very special. Marilyn leaves behind 11 grandchildren, Kristy Rosa, Jennifer Parkinson, Jessica Thrall, Lindsay Mehta and husband, Ranu, Ashley Thrall and friend Nick, Alycia Hazard and husband, Adam, Matthew Parkinson and wife, Andrea, Jeremy Parkinson and Justine, Caitlyn Lewis and husband, Matt, Emily Keifer and husband, Adam, Adam Parkinson and friend Ashley, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Marilyn leaves behind cousins, Edna Coyne, Dana Lear and wife, Mary, Ken MacKinnon and wife, Lynn, and Jerold Mackinnon.

Marilyn was also predeceased by her sisters Charlotte Campbell and Vera Higgins.

Marilyn will be missed by so many. We have lost a very beautiful woman who always had an open mind, a contagious smile and a heart filled with love to share. To her, family was everything.

She often would say “if ever you can’t find me, please don’t look for me on Cranberry Island.” (Of course that is where she would be reminiscing about her happy childhood.)

In lieu of flowers, please send contributions in memory of Marilyn to: “Help keep Great Cranberry Island Historical Society” http://www.gcihs.org/ or a charity of your choice.

Services will be held at a later date.

VANCOUVER, WASH.

Jane Rather Thiebaud, a former resident of Winter Harbor and Orono, passed away on Sunday, April 29, 2018, after a brief stay at the Ray Hickey Hospice House in Vancouver, Wash. She was 82 and had been in declining health. The daughter of former Grindstone Neck, Winter Harbor residents James B. Rather Jr. and Lillian Townsend Rather, she was born in Beaumont, Texas, Jan. 13, 1936, raised in Plandome, N.Y., and lived in Geneva, Switzerland, for more than 30 years before returning to the United States. She traveled widely abroad and lived in Maine, Colorado and California before settling in Vancouver about 10 years ago, where she was active in community events and a volunteer at a veterans center.

She graduated in 1953 from Manhasset High School in Manhasset, N.Y., where she played Dorothy in the school production of The Wizard of Oz. In 1957, she graduated from Sweet Briar College in Sweet Briar, Va. She spent her junior year in Paris, an experience that strongly influenced her life. In 1958 she was a guide in the American Pavilion at the Brussels World’s Fair, and later she worked at several international organizations. During her years in Geneva she worked in community event organizing and the movement for social change. She founded and edited Information and Contacts, a journal that sought to orient foreign visitors to Swiss and French culture.

After returning to the United States, she earned an MA in the teaching of French culture and language at the University of Maine. She went on to earn a Ph.D. in interdisciplinary studies in 2007 at the age of 71, becoming the oldest student ever to receive that degree from the university. Her great interest throughout her life was in French language, culture and lifestyle, and in promoting harmonious human relations and joyful living. In this regard she espoused, practiced and arranged face-to-face contacts between people in congenial settings. She abhorred the growing dominance of digital technology and the effects of unbridled consumerism.

She married Rene-Blaise Thiebaud, a Swiss lawyer, in 1961. He died in 1967. A second marriage to Jean-Claude Ivar Petterson, a Swiss artisan and activist, ended in divorce. She married Luc Guimond, an agronomist from Quebec, in 1997.

Her parents and a brother, James B. Rather III, predeceased her. In addition to Mr. Guimond, she is survived by a brother, John Townsend Rather, and six nieces and nephews.

A memorial service is planned at the Congregational Church of Manhasset in Manhasset, N.Y.

SEDGWICK

James Wood Jr., 78, known by family as Jimmy J, passed away peacefully at his home on May 19, 2018, surrounded by his loving wife of 58 years, Constance C. Wood, and devoted family. Jimmy was born in Machias, June 24, 1939, to Isabel (Farris) and James E. Wood Sr. in Machias.

He was a graduate of Ellsworth High School, Class of 1957. Soon after graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served for three years. Following his military service he went on to have a long and successful career as a well-known heating technician, a job he loved dearly. An avid outdoorsman and fisherman, to him there was no better place on Earth than at the river with a fly rod in his hand.

He is survived by his wife, Connie; son, Dennis J. Wood Sr.; daughter, Margaret Carter and husband, David Carter; grandson, Dennis J. Wood Jr. and his husband, Dominick Varney-Wood; granddaughter, Jamie R. Wood and partner, Barry Duffy. He is also survived by an uncle, Paul Farris, and several cousins and close friends, including Harold Johnston.

Along with being an amazing grandfather to Denny and Jamie he also loved two kids as if they were his own, Ryan and Barb Haskell.

The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Wanda Astbury for the love and care provided to Jimmy over the last few years of his life.

For those who would like to attend, there will be a graveside service at Pine Grove Cemetery in Sedgwick on Friday, June 1, at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests making donations to The Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org).
