Kathleen Sikkema, 92

Musician and Soprano Soloist

Formerly of Ellsworth, Kathleen Sikkema, age 92, passed peacefully away on April 2, 2018, at her home in Seymour, Mo., attended by bodhisattvas and angels.

Before moving to Seal Harbor in 1968 from Ridgewood, N.J., Kathleen performed at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and in Town Hall in New York City. She taught more than 50 private students a week and group guitar classes for Adult Education. She was part of a women’s vocal group, The Tone Aires, that raised thousands of dollars for UNICEF.

Renowned for her passion and skill with music, for several decades she managed Victor’s House of Music on Main Street in Ellsworth. An accomplished soprano soloist, Kathleen sang and traveled with the Surry Opera Company during the group’s famous outreach series to the former Soviet Union. During the summers, she could be found at the Barn in Surry sharing her beautiful voice with visitors from far and near.

Over the years she’s taught the fundamentals of music to thousands of people, showcasing her mastery of classical guitar, voice, piano and organ. Later in life, Ms. Sikkema became a traveling elementary school music teacher in Hancock County, where she brought music alive for rural youth.

She served as choir director at St. Saviour’s Church in Bar Harbor in the late 1960s before going on to work as music director at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Ellsworth. Kathleen also enjoyed performing and directing musicals for the Ellsworth Players and The Gilbert & Sullivan Society. During her 70s, Kathleen sang with a local folk music group called Generations. She made her last CD at age 86 — “Wondrous Love” — which included many of her most cherished hymns.

Kathleen was an accomplished artist. She enjoyed writing, making quilts, painting and creating intricate beaded jewelry. She even built her own house in Ellsworth Falls.

She was born in Paterson, N.J., to Frank and Radia Van Dyk and was the beloved mother of Robert Sikkema of Melrose, Mass., Jo Moon of Springfield, Mo., Nancy Lee Sikkema of West Plains, Mo., and Norma Jean Sikkema of Springfield, Mo. BUCKSPORT

Fred Van Lue Mills, 85, passed away on April 8, 2018, in the loving care of his wife of 56 years, Kathy, and their daughters Kimberly and Christine. Fred was born in Bridgeport, Conn., on Sept. 6, 1932, the only child of Joseph Van Lue and Elsie May (Lunt) Mills.

After high school, Fred served as a ship fitter in the U.S. Navy from June 1952 through 1957. He was proud to have served in the Navy; fondly sharing stories of his service aboard the USS New Jersey (BB-62) during the Korean War, and as a ship fitter building the USS Nautilus, and USS George Washington. After being discharged from the Navy, he joined the Merchant Marines, traveling the world on various oil tankers.

In 1962, Fred married Kathleen Olga Feuerbacher and they started a new life together living in Bridgeport, Conn., welcoming two sons Fred Van Lue Jr. and Robert Lee (both deceased in 1979), and a daughter, Christine Marie. He worked for 10 years at the Bridgeport Hydraulic Co. Fred spent his childhood summers visiting relatives on “the old farm” in North Penobscot, where he grew to love the region. In 1971, Fred and Kathy moved the family to Maine to make Bucksport their home. Shortly after moving to Maine, they welcomed their fourth child, Kimberly Ann. Fred was a police officer of the Bucksport Police Department from 1972, until his retirement in 1987. He was a member of the first graduating class of the State of Maine Basic Police School as well as the Drug Enforcement Class in 1972.

Throughout his years Fred enjoyed oil painting, welding, collecting model trains, working with farm animals and sharing memories of his time spent in the Navy, and as a police officer. Kathy, Kim and Chris would like to thank everyone who assisted in providing the care Fred needed in his later years that allowed him to be home, where he wanted to be, until his passing. We would like to thank the Bucksport police officers, fire and ambulance crew members who were quick to respond in a caring fashion when called. Also, the health care professionals from Hancock County Homecare & Hospice, and the Home Based Primary Care of VA Maine Health Care System. We would like to thank Clay from the Hospice Volunteers of Hancock County; the times you spent with Fred were some of his most enjoyable moments in the last year.

Services to honor Fred’s life will be held on Friday, May 11, 2018, at 11 a.m. at the Riverview Cemetery, River Road, Bucksport. A reception at the Edward Arey Community Center (1160 River Road, Bucksport) will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Fred’s name to support the police and fire departments care of the Bucksport Firefighters Association, P.O. Box 1848, Bucksport, ME 04416. SURRY

Joseph Bythell (J.B.) Matthews, a lifelong leader in The Salvation Army, who was best known in any gathering as a supremely competent, gentle, witty and godly man, died on April 10 in Bangor. At the time of his passing he was preparing his home for its spring landscaping. Making splendid gardens was a passion for him in retirement, for he could create beauty with beautiful love of his life, Mary, who was the prettiest flower in the garden. He acknowledged that she mostly gave directions and he followed. It seemed to work for them, as they were blessed with almost 62 years of marriage together.

J.B. and Mary have two children — a son, Jason, who is now a lobsterman and active community member on Swan’s Island, and a daughter, Lt. Col. Michele, who serves at The Salvation Army’s National Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

In The Salvation Army, J.B. (and the whole family) had many appointments — in Oklahoma City, Atlanta, Washington and Louisville, among others, J.B. finishing his Salvation Army career as the national chief financial officer of the entire organization.

Tributes to J.B. consistently mention his calm, pastoral demeanor, his love of laughter and his pure joy of family.

J.B. is also survived by a brother and sister and an extended family. He was particularly fond of his granddaughter, Morgan Michele, age 10. We all took a back-seat to her. It’s OK, we dealt with it.

J.B. loved the Lord, read his Bible every day, and prayed for his family.

He loved the New York Yankees and the Washington Redskins.

As an ardent outdoor grill master of some distinction, he awaits us all at the Lord’s banquet, finally playing his violin well, his cornet better, and has steaks, scallops and corn on the grill.

He never got enough cinnamon rolls. J.B. was 86.

A celebration of the life of J.B. will be held at The Salvation Army Bangor Citadel Corps on Sunday, April 22, at 1:15 p.m. The address is 65 South Park St. in Bangor.

An additional celebration will be held at Parr Funeral Home, 3515 Robs Drive in Suffolk, Va., on Saturday, May 12, 2018. Visitation with the family will begin at 10 a.m. with the service following at 11.

Moe was a U.S. Air Force veteran and worked as a truck driver in Connecticut before moving back to Maine in 1988 to start his own business (Handy Man Service), fully retiring in 2017. He enjoyed hunting, camping and ATVing. He was a founding father, along with Kelton Muise and Rick Nielsen, of Acadia Area ATV Club and always remained active in the club. In 1997, he was instrumental in starting the state ATV organization “ATV MAINE,” was its first president and in 2013 was given president emeritus status for his many years of dedicated service to the organization.

In addition to Bev, his wife of 51 years, he is survived by his foster daughter Emily Haynes of Houston, Texas, brother David Sargent Sr. of Trenton, sister Katherine Stephenson of Bronson, Fla., brother-in–law Robert Budney of Woodbury, Conn., and Bob’s daughters Christy Monroe (Joe, CJ) of Wolcott, Conn., and Carlene Gordon (Paul, Jake, Nick) of Stratford, Conn., uncle Richard Salsbury and wife, Jinny, many nieces and nephews and his best friend, Eric “Rick” Nielsen of Trenton, whose love and support will never be forgotten. BIRCH HARBOR

James A. Sperry Sr. passed away peacefully on April 6, 2018. He was born Sept. 27, 1941, to Wilbur and Hazel Sperry in Middlebury, Vt.

Jim went to the school of Hard Knocks at an early age and learned that if you wanted something, you had to work for it. Working on the Miller family farm and learning carpentry skills on the way, Jim became a highly sought after carpenter and contractor. As a self-employed carpenter and contractor, there wasn’t anything he couldn’t build or was afraid to tackle. After many years of construction, he settled into his favorite aspect and opened his own business, “Custom Cabinetry and Trim Shop” in North Walpole, N.H. Through the years, Jim lived in Middlebury, Vt., Colebrook N.H., Pittsburg N.H., Keene N.H., Walpole, N.H., and finally in Birch Harbor.

Jim was an avid hunter and fisherman and in his later years enjoyed the occasional trip to Foxwoods Casino or Hollywood Slots to try his luck. For years Jim called the Pickled Wrinkle his hangout and could be found there each day enjoying his diet root beer and catching a game on TV.

Jim was predeceased by his mother and father, but also by his Uncle June and Aunt Ruth Miller, who raised him. He is survived by his son, Jim Sperry, and wife, Lynda, of Lamoine; daughter, Debbie Sperry, of Colebrook, N.H., and his ex-wife and close friend Rose Eastman, of Conway, N.H.; four grandchildren: Jimmy, Jason, Ryan, Jessica; three great-grandchildren: Jay, Grasea, Saelor; an abundant number of cousins from the Miller Family, who were more like brothers and sisters to him. Numerous friends who meant a lot to him: Jim M., Josh, Lawrence, Marty, Mert, Linwood, Earl, Junior, Jim C. and Mitch and Janet, just to name a few.

Special thanks to the nursing staff and doctors at MCMH and especially at Courtland Rehabilitation for their kindness, friendship and personal care throughout his extended stay and rehabilitation with them!

A celebration of life will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, at the Pickled Wrinkle in Birch Harbor.

BAR HARBOR

Karl David Shelton, 83, of Bar Harbor and Palmetto, Fla., passed away on April 9, 2018, ending his battle with cancer. He leaves behind his wife of 21 years, Rebecca Shelton; his daughter and son-in-law, Anne Shelton Micci and Robert Micci; son and daughter-in-law, Steven David Shelton and Brenda Sue Shelton; daughter and son-in-law Audrey Shelton Minutolo-Le and Brian Le; and seven grandchildren, Jamie Richardson, Kyle Richardson, Joshua Shelton, Christopher Shelton, Sarah Shelton, Serena Minutolo-Swanson and Caitlin Minutolo-Murphy. He also leaves behind three great-grandchildren, Thatcher, Walker and Lila, who brought him great joy. His wife, family, friends and neighbors remained by his side during the last days of his life.

David, also known as K.D., was born in Philadelphia on Jan. 17, 1935. His mother, Paula Riek, emigrated from Crailsheim, Germany, in 1929 and met David Llewelyn Shelton in 1933 while working at the Dorrance estates in Bar Harbor and Philadelphia. The couple married and, after young David’s birth, settled in Bar Harbor in the spring of 1935.

As a boy, young Karl David served as an altar boy at St. Saviour’s Episcopal Church and caddied at Kebo Valley Golf Course. He attended Bar Harbor High School, where he wrote for the school newspaper, played in the school band and co-captained the football team.

Karl David attended the University of Pennsylvania from 1953-1955 and served in the U.S. Navy as a Navy Band member and a teletype operator on the U.S.S. Barton in the Mediterranean Sea from 1956-57.

On March 31, 1957, Karl David married Esperance Allison Thatcher (Shelton) at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Southwest Harbor, officiated by Allison’s father, Rev. Robins Herbert Thatcher. Together, David and Allison had three children: Anne, Steven and Audrey. During the summers, Dave managed to balance work, family, hobbies, vegetable gardens and playing tuba for the Bar Harbor town band on Thursday nights. His caring nature was evident in his family, his home, music and community.

Dave’s career marked a varied and successful part of his life. After working for the family business, Shelton Brothers, he created Aqualand on Frenchman Bay at the head of Mount Desert Island, where Dave and Allison cared for eight seals and other wildlife. Dave’s career led him back to Shelton Brothers as the new owner for several years. In 1978, he struck out on his own again and moved the family to Sarasota, Fla., where he bought a graphics and signage company, Display Concepts. Display Concepts eventually moved back to Maine and received a U.S. Patent as well the 1999 Maine Business of the Year Award with recognition at the State Capitol with then-Governor Angus King.

Throughout his long and wonderful life, David loved the outdoors — boating, nature walks, and golfing with his son and grandsons. He lived with his wife Rebecca in Bradenton and Palmetto, Fla., for more than 20 years, where the couple enjoyed reading, gardening, listening to classical music and outings along the Gulf Coast.

Dave touched everyone he met with his kindness, wit and philosophical approach to life; he was fascinated by the vast expanse of the Universe and humanity’s place within it.

A celebration of his life will be held on May 19, 2018.

Rita Ellen (Bates) Woodard, 92, of Ellsworth. Born to Roy and Evelyn Bates on Nov. 17, 1925. On March 21, 2018, Rita joined Ralph in their mansion in Heaven.

In 1943, Rita E. Bates and Ralph E. Woodard Jr. said “I Do” and thus began their adventure that spanned 54 years. Rita until recently lived in the Ellsworth home they bought in 1946. Rita attended Ellsworth United Baptist Church for over 70 years and assisted with anything good-natured Ralph was asked to do. Summing up a life of 92 years requires a book, but that’s too expensive. So, here are some descriptive words and phrases I hope spark a fond memory. Thrifty, Teddy Bears, second mom, Green Lake camp, sign the table, rainy day naps, church skits, Baptist Youth Camps, chicken coop, crafty, fun and funny, articulate, soft molasses cookies, loving matriarch, generous, comforting, humor your man, neighborhood watch with Charlotte Fortier.

Predeceased by husband, Ralph, in 1997, daughter Robyn, granddaughter Lori (Evelyn) Abbott, parents, brothers, sisters and in-laws. Survived by daughter Jeanne (Woodard) Abbott, son Barry Woodard (wife Betty) all of Ellsworth and an extra special niece, Rosanna (Grover) Libby of Newburgh. Grandchildren: Linwood Abbott (wife Elise) of Assonet, Mass., Robyn (Abbott) Saunders (husband Brad) of Surry, Troy Woodard (wife Sheryl) of Seal Cove, Ronald E. Abbott (wife Jennifer) of Ellsworth and Todd Woodard of Ellsworth. Six great-grandchildren: Joshua, Annie, Steven and Jonathan, all Abbotts, Brittney (Woodard) Shepard and Nicholas Woodard and two great-great-grandchildren, Sophia and Wes Shepard. One brother Richard Bates of Pinnacle, N.C., and dozens of nieces and nephews.

BROOKSVILLE

Charles William Treyball, 57, of Brooksville passed away peacefully at his home after a courageous battle with stomach cancer on April 9, 2018, at 2:22 a.m. He was born June 19, 1960, to Dorothy Ann and Eugene Treyball in Bronx, N.Y.

Charlie was an organic farmer, stone mason and landscaper with a deep connection to the Earth and appreciation for its natural beauty. He studied human ecology and specialized in ornithology at College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor. He was owner and founder of Natural Rhythms Landscaping, leaving a legacy to his daughter Ruby, who will continue in his life work. For his family, communities and the Earth, Charlie was a tender and nurturing caretaker; with love and wisdom, his strong gentle spirit, kindness and generosity touched all who crossed his path.

Charlie is survived by his mother; wife, Mona Pearl Treyball; children Zachary, Annika, Ruby and Jack; stepchildren Kattey, Dale, Brian, Megan and Duncan; grandchildren Zev, Ari and Madeline; siblings Keith and wife, Jennifer, Brendan and Renee; and brother-in-law Leonard Tillis. He was adored by nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Charlie was predeceased by his father and aunt Rosaleen McKenna.

As Charlie’s health deteriorated, when asked how to help, Charlie only asked for you to be happy, love someone near you and pray for those in need. In his last days he was ordering seeds and planning the crops to come. His mother, wife, children and siblings graced his last days, caring for him so tenderly and completely with love in their hearts. His deeply loved wife, Mona, walked together with him in their many spiritual journeys and throughout his long illness. Zak, Annika, Ruby and Jack are a true legacy of his love and the greatest seeds he has nurtured to sprout in this world. Charlie’s Vajra Vidya Sangha’s prayers surrounded him hours before he passed and in the hours afterwards gracing his home and heart with their presence.

Charlie was a devout Buddhist and had a very special relationship with his precious root teacher Khen Rinpoche Lobzang Tsetan, founder of the Siddhartha School and abbot of Tashi Lhunpo Monastery If it moves you to make a charitable contribution, Charlie’s wish was to support the Siddhartha School, whose mission is to educate Tibetan children and to preserve Tibetan culture. Charlie and Mona have sponsored two beloved children from the school, Thinley Angmo and Stanzin Yangdol. A special fund has been set up in Charlie’s memory to provide a place for the children to come together pray, and sing each morning. Geshe Tsewang, the director of the Siddhartha School and a dear friend, led these children in prayer for Charlie during his final days and can be viewed online at: https://youtu.be/Skv1TUdG8Do.Donations:  -https://donatenow.networkforgood.org/sspmemorialfund

The family has planned a celebration of life on April 22 from 1-3 p.m. at Turrets Hall, College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor. We would love to have you join us and share our memories of this amazing man who graced our lives.

MANSET

Carroll Leroy Pinkham Sr. died unexpectedly April 18, 2018, at his home. He was born in Steuben on April 1, 1931, to Carlton L. and Julia E. (Dyer) Pinkham. Carroll was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Being born on April Fools’ Day suited Carroll well, as he was known for his practical jokes and sense of humor. Generous almost to a fault, Carroll was known to lend a helping hand to anyone that needed it; and gained much pleasure when he came across a “treasure” he knew someone needed or wanted. He was a man who always had something to do and no time for standing around. He began work as an adolescent, helping his father lobster fish and other odd jobs. As a 16-year-old, he helped fight The Great Fire of 1947. At 17, he joined the Navy and served during the Korean War. He was a fireman on the USS Oriskany CVA-34, the first aircraft carrier to round Cape Horn. Serving for seven years until 1955, he went on to do many types of work from logging to building bridges. Beginning work at Hinckley Yachts in 1962, he found his calling first as a painter and ultimately as a finish carpenter.

On March 5, 1960, Carroll married Edna L Seavey of Columbia, and they would share the next 58 years together. In 1965, Carroll and Edna moved to Mount Desert Island, where they started their own family, ultimately settling into the home where they would raise their children in Seawall. He and his wife spent their time going to visit their families “Downeast” every Sunday. When not working as a finish carpenter at Hinckley’s he spent many nights and weekends working at Norman Farrah’s trap mill, or chopping and stacking wood to sell in the summer. In spare moments he could be found in his garage making toys for his kids, a yard ornament for their lawn or a beautiful piece of furniture. His talent attracted many passers-by to stop for a photo. Carroll begrudgingly retired from Hinckley’s after 45 years to spend time with his family.

One thing that never changed was his love for his wife. Anywhere you saw him, you knew she was close by. They did everything together from joining the Acadia Area ATV Club and riding the trails, to duck hunting, fishing and camping. Every year he looked forward to their drive to Mars Hill to visit friends and buy fresh bags of potatoes to bring back for family. The only time you would find him without his wife was deer hunting season; that was reserved for camp and time spent with his brothers. He always returned home with a deer for the freezer. He went on his final hunt last November; returning with a six-point buck. Carroll spent many hours after retiring watching and feeding any and all wildlife that came around, including stray cats. Although he had two of his own indoor cats that gave him so much happiness, he fed, named and built houses for every cat that wandered into his yard. Never one to waste time standing around, he died as he lived, on the go, feeding the wildlife and working in the yard.

Carroll is survived by his wife, Edna of Manset, four daughters, Selena Gordon and her husband, Burnie, of Hancock; Lisa DeLaittre and her husband, William, of Bar Harbor; Julie White and her husband, Robert, of Rhode Island and Vanessa Pinkham and her husband, Chris Peterson, of Seal Cove and one son, Carroll L. Pinkham Jr. of Columbia Falls; six grandchildren; Nicholas and Katie Norwood, Joshua and Cameron DeLaittre and Robert and Alexander White and his first and only very special great-granddaughter, Willow Bousquet. One of nine children, Carroll is also survived by five brothers; Vernon “Bunny” Pinkham, Earl “Perky” Pinkham and his wife, Terri, Carlton “CarlyP” Pinkham and his wife, Judy, all of Steuben, Rodney Pinkham and his wife, Marion, of Hancock, and one sister Vivian Dean of South Portland. Carroll was predeceased by both parents and three brothers, Herbert and Ivan, William Pinkham.

He will be sadly missed by his family and numerous relatives and friends

A service for anyone wishing to attend will be held at 1pm on Saturday, April 28, 2018, at Jordan–Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth. Interment will be immediately following at the Evergreen Cemetery in Milbridge. Donations can be made in Carroll’s name to the SPCA of Hancock County, 141 Bar Harbor Road, Trenton, ME 04605 or to any animal rescue of your choice.

ORLAND

January 8, 1942 – March 29, 2018

Frank Imre Hamory left a beautiful legacy filled with memories of food, laughter and love. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, and four children, Alexander Imre, age 46, of Park City, Utah, Nicole Cavallaro, age 44, of Salt Lake City, Maja Liotta 44, of Maui, Hawaii, and Marlis Hamory, 40, of Santa Barbara, Calif., and nine adoring grandchildren.

Imre immigrated from Budapest, Hungary, during the Hungarian Revolution in 1956. His mother, Marion, and brother Peter made headlines in the New York Times as they recounted their incredible journey in February of 1956. He and his brother graduated from Devon Prepatory as a recipient of a refugee scholarship. He also attended Pratt Institute in NYC, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in hotel and restaurant administration. Imre hit the ground running, landing a job at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City.

The son of a Hungarian Opera protégé, Frank was a father, husband, entertainer, chef, host and friend of many. He is best remembered for his deep baritone voice and his distinct Hungarian accent, making him the perfect Count Dracula in the local community theater, “Theater on the rocks” in York, Maine, where the couple raised their four kids and ran their restaurant, The Spice of Life, for a decade.

Locals remember Frank as the consummate host, always willing to play a trick, tell a joke or join the local musicians on his set of bongo drums. In addition to his participation in the local theater, Frank earned legendary status playing character roles in the local ballet company, Ballet New England. With his performance as the Mouse King, Cinderella’s ugly stepsister, Herr Drossemeyer and most remarkably, the legs of Mother Ginger, Frank gave new definition to the term character. To unwind, Frank enjoyed tying his own flies for fly fishing and rebuilding classic wooden boats, one of which is still on the water today; a Cape Cod knockabout sailboat enjoyed on the waters of Lake Alamosook.

Frank was a man of many passions. Memories we cherish of our time with Frank include enjoying boat ride sunrises over the ocean while hauling lobster traps, chasing schools of bluefish or striper across the ocean in one of his handsome rebuilt classic wooden fishing boats, sampling with delight one of his many culinary creations, or learning how to properly clean fish and make the best fish fry ever. One of the greatest legacies Frank passed on to his children is the importance of living passionately and the priceless value of giving and sharing through food and drink.

After a successful career with Parson Brinckerhoff as a corporate trainer, Frank retired with his wife, Dorothy, in Orland and built their lakefront home where they spent many summers with their children and grand children enjoying sunsets, fishing adventures, lobster bakes, pig roasts with the company of their lake friends. Frank passed away on March 29, 2018, of alcohol-related liver disease. Frank’s life exemplifies why addiction needs to be seen as a disease and not a weakness in character. His remains were cremated and a celebration of life will take place this summer on Lake Alamoosook in Orland.
