FRANKLIN

Michael Harvard Bellatty passed away peacefully at home on March 20 with family by his side. He was born in Presque Isle July 15, 1957, to Harvard Ralph Bellatty (deceased) and Vena (Teddy) Hamel Bellatty (Giles), still with us. Mike is celebrating in heaven with the Lord. Left behind is his caregiver and loving wife, Kenda; children, Michael, Angela, Tommy, Eddie and Natalie; Kenda’s dad, Ken; daughters, Holly, Sammi, Betsy and Sarah; sisters, Lynn and Carol; brothers, Bill, PF, Eric and all of their extended families; seven grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Mike would have wanted to mention Uncle Bill, Aunt Royce and baby Kenda, who all had a special place in his heart.

Mike enlisted in the Army in 1978 and retired with the rank of first sergeant after 20 years of honorable service. He eventually returned to Franklin, where he lived among family and friends for the rest of his life. He was a frequent flyer at the Franklin Vets Club, knew everyone in town and was willing to give a hand to anyone he met.

There will be a celebration of Mike’s life on July 7 at 4 p.m. at the Franklin Veterans Club. We will be sad for awhile but take comfort in knowing that Mike is with his dad, grandparents, Paul, and definitely playing poker with Abbey.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Franklin Veterans Club in Mike’s memory for the Flags Over Franklin Program. Franklin Veterans Club, P.O. Box 66, Franklin, ME 04634.

FREDERICTON, N.B.

     Phyllis Marie (Scova) Jordan.

Loved mother of Karon and Reigh, Phyllis Jordan died at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital in Fredericton, N.B., on March 29, 2018.

Radio and television personality, Romper Room’s “Miss Phyllis” at CKCW, Moncton in the ’60s and ambassador for Ste. Anne’s Court (she should have been on the payroll!), she gave us love and happiness. She had a wonderful sense of humor and was a shining example of positive living following a devastating stroke in 2006.

Predeceased by her husband, Herbert H. Jordan, in 2005 and her brother Reigh Eldridge in 2017, Phyllis was the eldest daughter (born in Yarmouth, N.S., on Aug. 18, 1926) of Harry and Nellie (Porter) Eldridge (deceased). She is survived by her daughter Karon Croll (Jim), son Reigh Sweezey (Elaine), sister Jean Marshall in Bridgewater, N.S., sister-in-law Lois Eldridge, grandchildren Kassia and Kyle Sweezey, great-grandchildren Nicholas Schlakat, Cohen and Lily Sweezey, special niece and nephew Claire and Len MacFarlane, and their children Leah (Matt) and Sarah Kate (Marc); Stephen and Nancy Eldridge and their children Jessica (Sean) and Zach.

In her younger days, Phyllis was a singer with the RCAF Greenwood dance band, and a member and director of the chapel choir at RCAF Chatham. She lived in Ellsworth for 32 years, helping Herb manage their cottage properties on Green Lake. She was a generous donor to the Fredericton YMCA, a member of the Y’s Strong Kids Program and a member of the Fredericton Heritage Hooking Guild.

No visitation by request. Cremation has taken place. Private family burial at a later date. At Phyllis’s request, donations in her memory may be made to a charity of your choice. Arrangements are entrusted to Bishop’s Funeral Home, 540 Woodstock Road (458-1885).

LITTLETON, COLO.

Viviana Frigerio

7/2/1929 – 3/26/2018

Born in Argentina, Viviana ventured to New York City when she was 18 years old. It is there that she met and married Ignazio Frigerio, and in 1958 they took their first vacation to Mount Desert and fell in love with its beauty. From that moment on Viviana was determined to spend her life in Maine. It took a while, but in 1982 Viviana and Ignazio purchased a little shack on Indian Point Road in Pretty Marsh. They would spend every possible free moment there, until finally in 1991 they built their dream home and moved to Maine for good.

Before moving to Maine, Viviana had an interesting career as secretary to the president of CBS International, as well as with an antique appraiser and a clock company. When she moved to Maine, she was a regular volunteer at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth, where she was named Volunteer of the year in 2005.

Viviana was an incredibly talented craftsperson. She had the ability to turn fabric into works of art. From her quilts lovingly stitched, to her clothespin dolls, clever greeting cards and stuffed dolls imbued with personality, everything Viviana put her hand to was made with love, care and beauty.

Viviana spent some of the happiest years of her life in Maine, surrounded by deep friendships and natural beauty. Gazing out her kitchen window looking at the wildlife romping in the marsh, and hearing the call of the loon gave her great joy.

Viviana is survived by her husband of over 62 years, Ignazio, who now resides in Littleton, CO., her son Pier Paolo and Sandie Low Frigerio of Marietta GA, daughter Luciana Frigerio of Norwich, VT, and son Jacopo and Jenifer Frigerio of Littleton, CO, as well has her four grandchildren Samantha Frigerio, Juliana Frigerio, Galen Richardson and Olivia Richardson.

AURORA

Gail Campbell Higgins died March 25, 2018, in Springfield, N.H. Gail was born on Dec. 20, 1947, the second of six children to Floyd and Kathleen Campbell in St. Johnsbury, Vt. She graduated from Orono High School, Orono, in 1965. At Nasson College, she met her future husband of 49 years, Richard E. Higgins Jr. of Bangor. Married on Jan. 17, 1969, after earning their degrees, the young couple moved to Boston, the first of many places on the path of their life together. They raised their children in Andover, N.H. Wherever she lived, she was a full-time mother while managing a career. With associate degrees in business and finance, she brought her energy to such varied positions as bank branch manager for Bar Harbor Banking and Trust in Machias and Bar Harbor, Union Trust in Ellsworth, Lake Sunapee Savings in New London, N.H., Bank of New Hampshire in Concord, N.H., town clerk in Andover, N.H., and registrar of voters and Planning Commission in Aurora.

Though small in stature, her heart made room for everybody. She was a fierce and formidable opponent of ignorance in its many forms. Her petite presence held a capacity for intense expression of intellect and emotion. Her greatest love was for children, books and learning. She was a middle school librarian in Corinna, and was always willing to serve on committees and fundraisers including the board of the Porter Memorial Library in Machias.

After retirement, Gail and Rick built their dream house deep in the forest. She toted lumber, pounded nails and kept us all well fed. She was proud to tell people “we live off the grid.” She loved working in her garden, but the best part was time with her children and grandchildren who constructed exquisite “fairy houses” in the woods. She made sure they washed the fish smell off hands before meals, wore life jackets if within sight of water, brushed their teeth and went to bed early so they could read more stories. She was also known to instigate fiercely competitive family games like Candy Land, Sorry, Clue, cards and beginner’s piano lessons. She played paper dolls, Legos, jump rope and badminton as long as the kids were there to share the joy.

Every winter Gail made hundreds of Christmas cookies for all her grandchildren. Summer was hot dogs and s’mores over a campfire. Spring was for violet blossom jelly and early mornings were for homemade bread cut into cinnamon toast soldiers. Gail treasured small sweet special moments like lunch with a daughter and grandchild, flea markets with a friend, the first wild rose blossoms in a glass on the table and especially rare weekend trips with her sisters and mother. Plenty of now grown children benefited from her patient tutoring. After more than 50 years she still thought her husband was the best looking, funniest, most musically talented man she had ever met. Which means she has left behind the luckiest kind of man. This love would also explain the night crawlers in the fridge, her knowledge of Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters and her finesse with a little corn meal and a brook trout.

She is survived by her mother, Kathleen Campbell of Strafford, Vt., husband, Richard E. Higgins Jr., of Aurora, daughters Jennifer Higgins of Tucson, Ariz., Heather Barrett of Springfield, Mass., Sarah Anderson and husband, John Anderson, of Springfield, N.H., grandchildren Silas R. and Ezra Andreas Schneider, Tucson, Ariz., Inari-Jade Barrett of Springfield, Mass., Gage Higgins and Gavin Floyd Fleming, Ruby Gail, step-grandchildren Mikayla Nicole and Jocelyn Marie Anderson of Springfield, N.H., her five siblings, and many dear friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Gail Campbell Higgins Memorial Fund, payable to Ellsworth Public Library, 20 State St., Ellsworth, ME 04605.

TRENTON

Judith (Noyes) Lilly, 63, passed away unexpectedly March 17, 2018, at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital. She was born in Island Falls Jan. 31, 1955, to Pauline and Lloyd Noyes.

Judi loved and took pride in many things. She enjoyed being outdoors; you would often see her having BBQs in her backyard or camping with friends and family during the summer months. She was always very proud of her children and grandchildren, always trying to pass along her knowledge to them, as she had quite a bit to teach. When Judi wasn’t enjoying her free time she would be working as a CNA doing in-home care. This type of work was something that she had a passion for and worked very hard at. Judi would always tell stories of her childhood days, spending time outside with friends or spending time at the local Boy Scout camp that her father was the director of; she wasn’t one to worry about getting her hands dirty. She was the type of person who would get along with anyone, which would explain why she had so many friends as a child and continuing on into her adult years.

Judi is survived by her children, Sean Lilly of Augusta and Jennifer Fountaine of Trenton, grandchildren, Austin Lilly and Savannah Mohr, and brother Geoff Noyes of Virginia. Also many other family members and friends. She was predeceased by her parents.

There will be a celebration of life at a later date.

Judi was a kind-hearted person to not just people but to animals and would donate as often as she could to the Hancock County SPCA. In lieu of flowers, donations in Judi’s memory may be sent to the local SPCA.

MILBRIDGE

Dorinda Irene Thibeau, 59, of Milbridge died Thursday, March 29, 2018, at her home. Dorinda was born Aug. 6, 1958, in Ellsworth, the beloved seventh child of seven children born to Sidney A. Thibeau and Mabel O. Thibeau.

Her career was spent working as a mental health social worker, counselor and crisis worker for both children and adults; she was at her very best supporting people in need of love, compassion and medical care, showing them how to endure in hardship and teaching them how to grow to their greatest potential. Although she was faced with physical challenges of her own, she did so bravely and without complaint while continuing to work for her clients and on remodeling her home. Dorinda was best known for her intelligence, enjoyment of reading, sweet smile, love for her extended family and everlasting loyalty to those whom she called friends, including her cat, Bugs.

Dorinda was predeceased by her parents, her brother Gregory Michael Thibeau, and her sister Sydney Sue Thibeau. She is survived by sisters Sally Leighton (and her husband, Bruce) of Milbridge, Valerie Yates of Sarasota, Fla., and Marina Thibeau of Belgrade, as well as brother Richard Thibeau (and his wife Charlene) of Traverse City, Mich. Dorinda is also survived by uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, as well as their children, all of whom she kept in her heart and thoughts every day.

Following cremation, there will be a memorial service later this spring for friends and family to gather in Dorinda’s memory. An announcement will be sent as soon as the family can arrange it. Arrangements are under the direction and care of Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, Milbridge.

SURRY

Jordan J. Shubert, MD, 74, of Surry passed away suddenly on April 1, 2018. He will be remembered as an extraordinary man, who made everyone he met feel special, and made the world a better place with each life he touched.

Jay was born in Seattle, Wash., but was really a Bangor man through and through, moving here when he was 6 months old. He was the son of William M. Shubert, MD and Alice Jordan Shubert, MD of Bangor. He attended Bangor High School and then Bowdoin College, playing football at both. After graduating from Bowdoin in 1966, he went on to attend medical school at Tufts University and then orthopaedic residency at Tufts/New England Medical Center, finishing in 1975 and becoming the third generation of doctors in his family. He worked as a surgeon in the U.S. Army, at William Beaumont Hospital in El Paso, Texas, before returning to Bangor in 1977 to begin his orthopedic surgery practice at Eastern Maine Medical Center.

Jay was the founder of Downeast Orthopedics and soon became one of the premier orthopedic surgeons in Maine. He stood out not only with regard to his skill, but also in the kindness and care he always gave to his patients. He was beloved by his many patients throughout the state of Maine. Always an innovator, he was one of the first to practice arthroscopy in the state, and founded the first outpatient surgery center. His awards and accomplishments are too numerous to list, but despite them, he was always humble.

The love that Jay had for Maine and the Bangor community was reflected in his commitments — he provided care for the University of Maine athletic teams, was active in the Bowdoin community and was a leader in medical education with the Maine Society for Orthopedic Surgeons, the Maine Board Review Course, the Association of Sports Medicine, the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine and the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons Council of Delegates. He brought many wonderful specialists to this area that he loved, and added tremendously to the level of health care for the people of Maine.

If you knew Jay, you know he simply loved life. He enjoyed running, skiing, swimming at the YMCA throughout his life, and living near the ocean, even becoming an amateur lobsterman later in life. He also enjoyed his second home in Gold Canyon, Ariz., where he spent his days hiking in the desert and golfing, and would escape to Colorado to ski in the mountains.

He never fully retired from medicine, continuing to see patients several days a month. He was ready for any challenge and took each one on with a fun determination, energy and a smile. He excelled in nearly everything he did, and if he didn’t, knew how to shrug it off with a laugh at himself. More than anything, Jay loved people, took such joy in his family, and always put his loved ones first. It leaves a hole in our hearts to lose him, but he leaves us all better people because of him.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lynne Santerre Shubert, of Surry, his four children, Jennifer Fournier of Bangor, Sarah Shubert, MD, and husband, Alpay Balkir, of Falmouth, Daniel Shubert, MD, currently in Morgantown, W.Va., and Emily Burke, and husband, Daniel, of Bangor and his five adoring grandchildren, Natalie Fournier and Hailey Fournier, of Bangor, Ryan Banerjee, of Falmouth, and James Burke and Genevieve Burke of Bangor. In addition, he is survived by his brother William Shubert, and wife, Carol, of Cherry Hill, N.J., Dennis Shubert, MD, and wife, Jane, of Seal Harbor, Susan Buchwald, MD, and husband, Ted, of Reno, Nev.; Robert Shubert of Bangor, his sister Sandra Adams and husband, Vernard, of Tampa, Fla., and Elizabeth Dupuis, and husband, Roland, of Seal Harbor, Jayson Shubert of Ellsworth, as well as countless cherished nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved sister, Sally Shubert, and his nephew, Scott Buchwald. Jay was also a treasured family member to Lynne’s parents, siblings and her extended family of the Millinocket area.

Services will be held at Brookings-Smith on Thursday, April 5, 2018, at 1 p.m., with a celebration of his life at Season’s restaurant to follow at 3 p.m. There will be a private ceremony later this summer.

Gifts in Jay’s memory can be made to the Sally Shubert Scholarship Fund, c/o Bangor School Department, 73 Harlow St. Bangor, ME 04401, to the Julius Shubert M18, Alice Jordan Shubert, M41 and William Moses Shubert, M41,Scholarship Fund at Tufts Univeristy, P.O. Box 3306, Boston, MA 02241-3306 with checks made out to Trustees of Tufts College, or to the Eastern Maine Medical Center Foundation, P.O. Box 931 Bangor, ME 04402.

HANCOCK

Robert Phippen Clark, the son of Francis and Elizabeth Phippen of Hancock, was born in Bangor on June 2, 1933, and died in the Sacred Heart Hospital in Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., on March 29, 2018. On his final night in life he was taken out to dinner and watched the Red Sox–Tampa game and enjoyed a glass of wine.

In his growing-up years, he worked in Hancock on his Clarke grandparents’ dairy farm and on Hancock Point in the summers with his caretaking relatives. He attended the Mount Desert Ferry School and the old Hancock Corner School. He loved sports, hunting and fishing, and being in the Boy Scouts, where he ultimately received the top rank of Eagle Scout. He spent two happy summers at Camp Roosevelt in East Eddington and later spent another summer there as an employee. He was also on the Hancock town baseball team. Because there were several other Roberts in the Clark/Clarke family, he was given the nickname of “Bobba” and at school he was called “Phip.”

He graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1950, where for four years he played football, baseball and basketball and ran track. He was a member of the Varsity Club and elected by his classmates “The Best Looking Boy of 1950”. His favorite movie star was Jerry Lewis, whom he liked to imitate.

Always a lover of airplanes, he had a huge collection of the old Wing cigarette cards that featured worldwide fighter planes. In his bedroom, he made model planes that he hung from his ceiling. In 1951, he joined the Air Force; and he and his pal Kenny Stratton drove across the U.S. to San Francisco, where they left for the Korean War. Before that, Bob was married to Betty Saulier in New Hampshire. While he was gone, his son Gary was born.

Returning from the war, he came home to a divorce and orders to report to Patrick Air Base in Cocoa Beach, Fla., where he met his second wife, Janet Cox. In 1957, they visited Maine before flying to Germany for three years where his daughter Sandra was born. While in Germany, he organized and Air Force softball team that toured Europe. Returning to the U.S. in 1960, he was stationed in Wyoming for his final and 10th year in the service. Moving to Florida, he got a job with the McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Co., for whom he worked in both Florida and California. With the transformation of old Cape Canaveral into Cape Kennedy, Bob found himself working in the space program and on the Apollo Project.

In 1978, he moved his family back to Maine, where he worked on Hancock Point and at the Jordan River Country Club in Trenton before becoming an assistant manager to “Crazy Gill” at The White Birches in Hancock. He also coached and umpired for the DeMeyer Field softball games in Ellsworth.

He was predeceased by his parents; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He is survived by his brother Sanford Phippen of Hancock, his good friend Carol Mangels of Brooklin, his second wife, Janet Carlin of Georgia, and his children: Gary Spaulding, Sandra Clark, Robert Clark Jr., Julie Clarke and Mike Clark. Also his grandchildren: Jason Ball, Crystal Armstrong, TJ and Courtney Wheeler, Amanda Turner, Robert Clark III, Mikey Clark, and Jeremy Clark. Bob’s great-grandchildren include Lilly Ball, Brittany Moulton, Nicky Colson; Alexis, Ashland and Emma Clark; Abby, Jocelyn, Reagan, and Rose Turner; Aaliyah and Landon Colson and Michael Gary Clark.

There will be a funeral and military service in Ellsworth and at Hancock’s Riverside Cemetery to be announced in the fall.

BLUE HILL

John Huston Murphy, 80, died on March 22, 2018, at Eastern Maine Medical Center, Bangor. He was born in Larchmont, N.Y., to William Beverly and Helen Brennan Murphy on June 17, 1937. After attending Avon Old Farms and Franklin and Marshall College, John married his summer sweetheart, Margaret (Peggy) Jarvis Lee of Sargentville, in 1958. They moved to Winston-Salem, N.C., and John embarked on a 30-year career with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co.

While their time in Winston-Salem was full of friends and adventures in the Blue Ridge Mountains, returning to the coast of Maine was never far from their thoughts. The annual 21-hour pilgrimage was a cherished adventure in itself! Exploring the waters and islands of Penobscot Bay created family connection and a deep appreciation for the beauty of Maine.

In 1987, John settled in Sedgwick. He worked at Seal Cove Boatyard for a few years and was active with the Congregational Church of Blue Hill. He volunteered with the Blue Hill Heritage Trust as treasurer and sang with the Bagaduce Chorale.

John tried to live his life with kindness, cheerfulness and a smile. A family man first and foremost, John had a knack for puns, and his goofball sense of humor never failed to bring laugher. His love of M&Ms was monumental, and his grandkids reveled in discovering his secret caches. He will be remembered for his quiet style, willingness to listen and giant heart.

Outside of his family, sailing Eggemoggin Reach and Penobscot Bay was John’s true passion. If you want to find John (aka the “Reach Man”) today, you only have to look to the water where the mast, hull and sail meet the horizon. You will find him at the helm with a soft afternoon breeze at his back.

John is survived by his daughter Lee and husband, David Shrewsbury; son John and wife, Elizabeth; daughter Susan Brennan Murphy; and six grandchildren, Nicholas, Johnny, Blair, Matthew, Wesley, and David. He is also survived by his sister Ann Zable and brothers Blair and Eric Murphy. He was predeceased by his parents and Peggy.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 30, at 3 p.m. at the Congregational Church of Blue Hill. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John’s memory to the Peninsula Ambulance Corps, P.O. Box 834, Blue Hill, ME 04614; Deer Isle Fireman’s Association, P.O. Box 275, Deer Isle, ME 04627; or the Memorial Ambulance Corps, Sunshine Road, Deer Isle, ME 04627.

Mary Danné Adair

Selfless. Infectious. Loyal. There are very few people whom possess the attributes that this woman possessed. Mary Danné Adair died on April 4, 2018. Mary loved helping others, working on her farm in Maine, gardening, rescuing feral cats, playing with her three dogs, CNN, chocolate marshmallow candy, heirloom tomatoes and her husband, Raj. Not necessarily in that order. She hated that there were people in the world who were suffering and Donald Trump. Not necessarily in that order. She was a dynamic psychotherapist who worked tirelessly to help all those in need, never turning anyone down.

Mary was also great at growing plants, cooking many dishes with her home-grown heirloom tomatoes, shopping for the best deals and honoring her husband over the last 33 years. When it came to her family, Mary was the best at making her children feel loved, adored and wanted. And she loved doing all of it. Mary loved creating memories, making friends and finding bargains. And you could be sure that Mary always gave everything she did 100 percent. Mary loved to share stories about a new cat she had just rescued or to share news about a friend, as she had many.

While Mary, herself, had many heroes, she was the hero to her five children: Chad, Dawn, Michelle, Danné and Ashwini. Mary adored these ladies. And each of them adored her. For more than 30 years, Mary helped clients, friends, and strangers through life’s difficulties. And each of them adored her. At an early age, Mary married. While it didn’t last, out of it came two lovely daughters. Mary was not a quitter, so she tried again. It, too, did not last, but out of it came two more wonderful daughters. The third time, she found the love of her life. For 33 years, she loved, honored and cherished Pakkam Rajasekaran, and with him came a lovely daughter.

Preceded in death are Mary’s parents, Bill and Olean Adair, and a sister, Vonnie Allen. Although Mary has departed from this world, she leaves behind her daughters, Chad Kessel, Dawn Fletcher and husband, John, Michelle Bell and husband, Wesley, Danné Delano and husband, Peter, and Ashwini Hull and husband, Jim, and a sister Marian Marshall. Let’s not forget about her eight delightful grandchildren: Andrew Kessel, John Fletcher, Charles Fletcher, Robert Benca, Ana Benca, Lucy Bell, Carys Hull and Jamie Hull. Also, Mary had several nieces and one nephew whom she loved dearly.

Finally, she cherished dear friends: Virgil Vallie, Sitie Parcell, Wayne and Cheryl Ladouceur, among numerous others.

A memorial service will be held to honor Mary on Tuesday, April 10, 2018, at 11 a.m. at Fox & Murray Funeral Home. Visitation with the family will begin at 10 a.m. Condolences and fond memories can also be shared on www.foxandmurrayfuneralhome.com.
