obit-suyamaSEBASTOPOL, CALIF./ELLSWORTH – Amy Aiko Suyama – April 26, 1961 to Sept. 10, 2016

Amy Suyama of Sebastopol, Calif., and formerly of Ellsworth, died on a beautiful Sonoma County fall day, Sept. 10, 2016, doing what she loved, riding her bike in a benefit ride though wine country with the Tour De Fuzz to help raise money for the local police chaplaincy. Amy was the same energetic, happy, friendly person you remember through the years and a motivating force for family and friends. Growing up in Maine, she graduated from Ellsworth High School where, as a senior, she won female athlete of the year. She went on to attend Bowdoin College, where she also played on the basketball and soccer teams. Perhaps you remember how fiercely competitive she was.

Over 30 years ago, she moved to California and started working in the organic produce business and for the rest of her life continued an unending passion for her work in the Northern California area, marveling at the beauty of the land, the changing seasons and the fantastic fruits and vegetables grown by the local farmers, most of whom knew and worked with Amy personally. Amy loved so many people and so many things; she generated cheer throughout the community of Sebastopol — at the grocery, the gym, the produce market, the bank, the hardware store, the bike store, wherever she went. Her quick sense of humor and her ridiculously bright smile, her warmth and care… she’d get your life story out of you whether you wanted to tell it or not.

She adored her five rescued dogs, as well as the wild birds outside her window; “they’re eating me out of house and home.” She loved to cook for her friends. Her home was gorgeous and full of neatly arranged things that she loved. She was a fan of the Golden State Warriors. She was fiercely loyal and true; she’d pinch a penny to save two bucks and then give you a hundred.

Losing Amy created a void in our hearts and lives and is an immense loss to everyone who knew her. Amy was one of a kind. She was not a saint, in fact was very strong willed, but her beauty was in her heart. Those who were lucky enough to spend time with her, even if for a minute, were forever touched. She had the gift of making you feel you were the most important person in the world in that moment.

After her father, Dr. Eji Suyama, retired, she cared for him until his death in 2009. She leaves a vast and eclectic group of loved ones behind — her close friends, her siblings Carol, Sara, Jon, Peter, and Paul, and her dear mom, Virginia. We were all blessed by her being here and being part of our lives. “Grief never ends, but it changes. It is a passage, not a place to stay. Grief is neither a sign of weakness, nor a lack of faith… Grief is the price of love.”

There will be a memorial service at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2016, at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Bangor. There will be an opportunity during the service to reflect on Amy’s life so please feel free to share your thoughts and stories. Donations can be made on-line in her name to the Ellsworth High School Alumni Association Endowment Fund or to the Sonoma County Humane Society on Highway 12, in Santa Rosa, Calif.

The Honorable Chester Edward Norris Jr.

obit-ea-isl-norrisflagLAMOINE/NAPLES, FLA. – The Honorable Chester Edward Norris Jr. of Lamoine and Naples, Fla., died Tuesday, Nov. 15, in Naples, Fla., following a brief illness.

Chet was born Dec. 1, 1927, in Bangor, one of four children to Chester Edward Sr. and Pauline Morse Norris, and raised in a home on the Penobscot River in Winterport that was alleged to once have been a part of the Underground Railroad. His early education started there, continued in St. Petersburg, Fla., and resumed in Maine, where he, with his siblings, attended a one-room schoolhouse at Great Pond Plantation 33. He graduated from Winterport High School and he attended the Maine Maritime Academy in 1945. He was a graduate of the University of Maine at Orono, where he was later awarded with UMO’s Stillwater Society Award.

Early in his life, he worked alongside his brother, father and uncle in their family-owned-and-operated businesses, to include car dealerships, real estate holdings, a small public utility and a construction company. He was, concurrently, a master Mason and a licensed securities analyst and stockbroker.

Through an introduction by and at the suggestion of Maine Sen. Margaret Chase Smith, he joined the U.S. Foreign Service in 1965 and eventually had postings in Tel-Aviv, Israel, where he met his future wife, Ulla; Sydney, Australia; London, England; Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; Lagos, Nigeria and the U.S. Mission to the United Nations in New York. Twice he was the recipient of the Department of State’s Superior Honor Award. He was also selected to attend the National War College in Washington, D.C., 1975-76.

In his career highlight as a Foreign Service Officer, he was Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Equatorial Guinea under President Ronald Reagan, presenting his credentials in March of 1988, and continuing service at the pleasure of President George H.W. Bush. His tenure there saw the first contracts negotiated between American energy interests and the government of Equatorial Guinea, starting a process that would transform one of the poorest countries in Africa into a major gas and oil producer. After retiring from the foreign service, Chet was approached by Houston-based Walter International to represent them as a consultant in Equatorial Guinea. He eventually worked for a succession of oil companies, such as CMS Nomeco and Marathon Oil. In recognition of his contributions to the energy industry, a methanol tanker was dedicated The Ambassador Norris in 2000 in the town of Beppu, Japan.

Chet was a firm believer in, and supporter of, the works of the Maine Sea Coast Mission, Bar Harbor, and served on its board for many years. He was a member of The Pot and Kettle Club, Bar Harbor; The Causeway Club, Southwest Harbor; The Forum Club of Southwest Florida; the Hole-in-the-Wall Golf Club, Naples, Fla.; and DACOR (Diplomatic and Consular Officers, Retired) Bacon House of Washington, D.C. In Bangor, he was a co-founder of Penobscot Associates, an investment club that is still going strong more than 50 years later. In Naples, he enjoyed his Thursday luncheon get-togethers with friends with ties to New England.

A man of great wit and humor, he regaled family and friends (more often than not in colorful language) with reminiscences of early family life in Maine and adventures abroad, such as driving a motor home from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to Athens, Greece, with his wife and a good friend.

Chet was kind and caring, a man true to himself. Although he traveled the world, he found most joy in his time spent at his home on the coast of Maine watching the deer and eagles in the company of his wife, Ulla, and his two little dogs, Molly and Brio.

He is survived by his wife, Ulla Helena Raberg Norris; brother John Morse Norris (Nancy) of Carabassett Valley; sister Bertha Norris Holmes of Portland, Maine; mother-in-law, Gun Raberg, brothers-in-law Staffan Raberg and Urban Raberg, Sweden; nieces Cinderella Norris of Rockport; Bethany Holmes Frank (Lanier) of Washington, D.C.; Betsy Loughin Greenlaw of Portland, Maine; Heather Holmes Floyd (Bill) of Waban, Mass.; Sarah Loughin Sotomayor of Portland, Maine; Kerstin Ljung, Sweden; nephews John Guynn Norris of Carabassett Valley; Heath Kevin Norris of Phuket, Thailand; Bjorn Ljung, Alex Raberg, Ville Raberg; great-nephews Shepherd Adams Frank of Glenwood, Md.; Robert Thomas Greenlaw II of Portland, Maine; William Henry Floyd IV; Herbert Norris Douglass Floyd of Waban, Mass.; and great-nieces Sarah Alicia Sharpe of Denver, Colo.; Hannah Holmes Floyd of Boston, Mass.; Campbell Lanier Frank of Washington, D.C.; Siri Johanna Norris of Red Hook, N.Y. He was predeceased by his sibling Bettsanne Norris Holmes in 2015, and by his nephew Paul Raymond Loughin III in 1989.

A private family memorial service and celebration of his life will be held this summer in Maine, and his interment at the Norris family mausoleum in Pine Tree Cemetery (Lamoine) will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations be made in Chester Norris’s name to the Maine Sea Coast Mission, Bar Harbor, and/or the SPCA of Hancock County, Trenton.

Constance R. Hanscom

ELLSWORTH/BANGOR – Constance R. Hanscom, wife of the late Albert E. Hanscom, died Nov. 17, 2016, in Bangor. She was born in Ellsworth nearly one hundred years ago in the house built by her grandfather on the bank of the Union River, now Leonard Lake. During high school she moved with her family to the New York City area, where she and Al met and later raised their family. She attended Mount Holyoke College, received a BA from Hunter College and a Master’s in Library Science from Queens College, N.Y. After receiving her MLS, she studied Russian at Hofstra University.

She was a retired librarian of the Bellmore-Merrick High School District, Long Island, N.Y., having begun her career at the elementary level. Fitting for a librarian, Constance was a voracious reader of fiction and non-fiction alike.

Constance’s early interest in local Maine history spurred a lifelong pursuit of genealogy. In the decades before internet research, she crisscrossed Maine and New England to visit country cemeteries, old churches, county courthouses, and town halls. She discovered she was descended from the first settlers of Ellsworth, Mount Desert and Deer Isle. In her family she also found four Mayflower passengers and five Revolutionary War soldiers. She compiled and published family histories of three of her grandparents: “Ancestors and Descendants of Josiah Garland and Miriam Moore,” “Descendants of Charles and Mary Chatto,” and “Ancestors and Descendants of James Garcelon and Deliverance Annis.” She donated copies of these reference works to libraries across Maine and the United States. Her articles have been published in genealogical journals, and she translated material for the American-Canadian Genealogist.

After retiring to Massachusetts where she had lived for a time as a child, she had the opportunity to travel the world and to research genealogy abroad. (Some favorite stories included visiting Scrooby, England, from whence the Pilgrims came, meeting in person frequent correspondents and distant relatives in France, climbing into the pyramid of Giza, and seeing the underground chambers of the terra cotta warriors in China.) While at home, she was a dedicated volunteer. The Mayflower Society recognized her for outstanding service in cataloging their library on Newbury Street, Boston. She was also a volunteer for ten years at the Federal Archives in Waltham, Mass., and at The State House in Boston before the Massachusetts vital records were moved to Columbia Point in Boston.

As a recent widow, she began a new life on St. Thomas where she resided near her son for ten years during the winter months. Always active, she gardened, swam and kept the rapid tropical plant growth in check.

A lover of classical music, she played the trumpet and the piano, and sang in church choirs. An avid gardener, in her early nineties she still planted and tended her outdoor gardens.

Grandmother of nine, great-grandmother of eight, she is survived by her three children and their families: Richard Hanscom (Richard Jr., Kenneth, Jeffery, Karin Pinkham, and Kristin Renbarger); Roger Hanscom (Andrew and Benjamin) and his wife, Alla; Nancy Davis and her husband, Mark (Elizabeth Smith and Matthew). She also leaves several nieces, a nephew, and their families.

She was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and was a member of the Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants, Daughters of the American Revolution, Maine Society of Genealogists, New England Historic Genealogical Society, and Maine Old Cemetery Association.

Her family deeply appreciates the care and support given to Constance in her final year by staff and caregivers at Boyd Place, the Sylvia Ross Home, Ross Manor–Waterman, Aging Excellence, and Hospice of Eastern Maine, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to all.

Services have been provided by Kiley & Foley of Bangor. Burial was at Juniper Cemetery, Ellsworth Falls, next to her husband, and near where her parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents are interred.

Her last wishes to all who knew her are found in Numbers 6:24-26.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Hospice of Eastern Maine, P.O. Box 931, Bangor, ME 04402-0931; New England Historic Genealogical Society, 99-101 Newbury St., Boston, MA 02116-3007; Maine Old Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 641, Augusta, ME 04332-0641, or to a charity of your choice.

Lloyd Thomas Snapp Sr.

flagCASTINE – Lloyd Thomas Snapp Sr., 88, died Nov. 19, 2016, at home in Castine, surrounded by his family. Born in Glover, Vt., on April 4, 1928, he was the eldest son of the Rev. Albert M.B. and Marguerite “Peggy” (Melin) Snapp. At 15 years old, he ran away to sign up for the Navy (1941-44). He was closed-mouth about much of his WWII experiences saying, “War was hell!” Lloyd attended Wesley College in Dover, Del., where he met Suzanne Marie Carbonneau. He fell in love and finally “Suzie” said, “Yes.” They married Aug. 25, 1951, and celebrated their 60th anniversary in 2011.

Lloyd graduated from Springfield College in Massachusetts in 1953.

His work with the YMCA took him to Wilmington, Del., Kalamazoo, Mich., and Williamsport, Pa., before finally settling in Camden in 1962. Lloyd served as the YMCA’s executive director for over 18 years. Lloyd was a very caring “Y” director, establishing new swim, gym and leadership programs and summer camps. He was respected and loved by his YMCA kids and changed many teen lives with his compassionate help. After retiring from the Camden Family YMCA, he worked for Downeast Magazine (1979 through the 1980s), becoming a top salesman. Sue and Lloyd also moved permanently to Castine. There he was a selectman; a deacon and head of church council at the Trinitarian Church, UCC. He also studied and got his license to sell real estate with Castine’s Saltmeadow Properties.

His grandchildren, Alan (AJ) and Kelsey, thrived as they grew up with Lloyd and Sue’s help. “Pop-Pop” proudly watched them both graduate from college and begin careers. Lloyd continued to smile even while going through his own health issues these last years. Because of the care by his family, he stayed home where he wanted to be. obit-johnstonflagHANCOCK – Earl Milton Johnston, 86, of Hancock, died Nov. 27, 2016, at his home. Earl was born in Hancock on July 21, 1930. He attended the old Mount Desert Ferry School and graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1948, after which he enlisted in the Army Air Force.

Growing up in Hancock with his older brother, Richard, and 46 first cousins from both the Clarke and Johnston families, Earl was related to many people from Hancock and all over Maine. He worked on the Clarke family farm and also for summer families on Hancock Point. One winter he got to stay at the Peirce family farm in Bryn Mawr, Pa. He was also a Boy Scout with the Hancock troop.

After basic training in the Army Air Corps (forerunner to today’s Air Force) in Texas, he was stationed at Savannah, Ga., and then in England, which he learned to love. He had a girlfriend there named Mollie for whom he named his daughter.

Returning to Maine after four years in the service, he married his first wife, the late Mary Thomas from Sullivan. They had three children. Earl built a camp at Molasses Pond, which became a popular hangout for both summers and hunting season. Earl loved the woods and hunting and driving his snowmobiles and other ATVs. He worked for the New England Telephone Company for 35 years seeing many technological changes from old party line phones to dial phones and today’s computerized systems. Earl loved having a computer.

Earl was a member of the Hancock Congregational Church for 72 years where, as a boy, he sang in the choir; and later as an adult served as a trustee and deacon. When he married his second wife, Betty, who became president of the Federation of Maine Woman’s Clubs, he traveled with her around not only Maine, but as far away as Oklahoma. For 50 years, Earl was a member of the Masons.

Earl loved his community of Hancock, and served it well. For many years, he was the President of the Riverside Cemetery Association for which he kept the files and where he set out the American flags every Memorial Day. He served the town as a selectman several times. He was also a lifelong caretaker of several summer places on Hancock Point.

Earl was predeceased by his parents, Paul and Phoebe Clarke Johnston, and by his older brother, Richard. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth “Betty” (Manchester) Johnston, and his three children: David of Hancock, Dennis and his wife, Lisa, of Hancock, and Mollie and her husband, Bob Higgins, of Waterford, Conn. He is also survived by five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, as well as his sister-in-law Stella Johnston and two nephews, John and Tom Johnston and their families.

The funeral will be held at the Hancock Congregational Church on Route 1 in Hancock on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2016, at 2 p.m. A reception will be held in the Church vestry. A private burial ceremony will be held at a later date.
