Shayla Dunn

obit-dunnEDMOND, OKLA. – On Sept. 29, 1986, in Bar Harbor, a precious angel was born to Cindy Bernstein and Robert Zerrien Sr. On Dec. 4, 2016, in Edmond, Okla., this beautiful angel was taken Home, with her family by her side. Shayla, born in Maine, grew up all across the country. When she was just two years old, she began her journey around the country, living in South Carolina, Maine, California, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Wisconsin and ending up back in Oklahoma to graduate high school. She decided to make Oklahoma her home, along with her brother BJ.

Not long after high school, Shayla met her soul mate, Austin, who previously passed on April 2 of this year. They were together for over 11 years, and married for almost six of those years. She has two precious boys that she leaves behind, Alijha, 6, and Rhyker, who just turned 2 the day before she passed. Shayla loved spending every bit of her time with her husband and their two boys. Watching Ninja Turtles with Alijha, Michelangelo was her personal favorite growing up. She used to walk around with two thumbs up uttering “Cowabunga Dude!” She was working with Rhyker and teaching him how to talk and be more independent. You couldn’t carry on a conversation with Shayla without hearing about how great the kids were doing. Holiday dinners at her brother’s or mom’s usually included lobster, of which all Shayla really cared about was sucking the meat out of all the legs.

She is a daughter, a sister, a mother and a wife, but that doesn’t begin to describe what she really meant to the ones that love her. She is a spitfire, you never had to worry about Shayla holding back or not telling you what she really thinks. She had no filters, but that’s what most of her friends love about her. Her friends were “all” her family. She truly had no enemies. She was more than just a ray of sunshine to those who loved her; she was the sun, the moon and the stars.

Those called home before her were her precious Austin (her husband and her only love), her brother Shawn, her paternal grandparents Charlene and Richard Zerrien Sr., her paternal grandmother Marguerite Hamblen and her Uncle “Bubba” Gordon McIntire.

Her passing has left a hole in the hearts of her two beautiful sons, Alijha Austn Dunn and Rhyker Austn Dunn, her mother Cindy Bernstein, fathers Robert Zerrien Sr. and Eric Bernstein, brother BJ Bernstein and his wife, Lacey, and son Corbin, sister Ashley Scott, maternal grandparents Rose and Thomas McIntire, maternal grandmother Billie McIntire, paternal grandfather Ari Bernstein, mother-in-law Tonya McDaniel, father-in-law Kelly Dunn and wife, Kristen, grandmother-in-law Frances “Meme” McDaniel, grandfather-in-law Sammy “Papa” McDaniel, brother-in-law Caylan Dunn and Megan Pinkston, brother-in-law Ayden Dunn and sister-in-law Ciara Dunn. All of Shayla’s aunts, uncles and cousins, great-grandparents-in-law and forever-loving-friends all share this great loss. God has called her Home, but we will see her again.

A come-and-go visitation for Shayla will be held from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 9, at Crawford Funeral Service, Edmond, Okla., with friends being received from 1 to 8 p.m. The celebration of Shayla’s life will be on Saturday, Dec. 10, at 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

obit-ea-isl-marshallFREEDOM, N.H. – Ian Harley Marshall: A Portrait of the Artist (Jan. 1933 – Dec. 2016)

Painting ships, Ian observed, has some of the same challenges as painting portraits. The painting, beyond revealing the complex depth of the subject, should say something about the personality of the sitter. The portrait of Ian Harley Marshall reveals a lively personality, focused and generous. The composition of the canvas captures attention: it is imbued with qualities of integrity, intellectual generosity, and joy.

A painting, any good painting, should have something to say. Well-traveled, the mementos surrounding the artist reveal his sense of belonging in many cultures. The well-tempered construction of his great buildings in Africa, modern, ambitious works revealing an optimistic confidence in the futures of Kenya, and Botswana. The collection of mahogany Indian elephants stepping in front of the Firth of Forth painting: his family history of travel connecting with his own experience of Scotland in times of war. Painted in overlapping composition, the garden follies from his school days at Stowe in England; and the granite stone paperweight, collected from the shore of Mount Desert.

Lively in mind and conversation, the portrait shows feet set firmly on the sands of Rocky Brae, the heart-stone for his family, in companionship, warmth and love. The artist is saying listen, imagine. His support for his children, Jessie, Rebecca and Paxton, allows the unexpected, revels in the unconventional, but never admits the facile. Quality, he writes, will not be found in art that is trite. Design, dance, administration, writing, the law, the creation of theatre, architecture, and the raising of beloved grandchildren, are all held to the same high standards: the intellectual and emotional effort is expected, and made; the resulting work must be economical, elegant, genuine and neat.

The artist presents a brief glimpse, an insight, fleeting effects. How much fun he has had! Woven into the composition is Ian’s wife, Jean: debating urban decisions in Boston, Edinburgh, Botswana, collaborating on new urban visions in Selebi-Phikwe, Serowe, Jwaneng; teaching in Edinburgh. We glimpse them climbing Arthur’s Seat with a deerhound running in the mist, camping on the beach in Aegina, swimming at Simon’s Bay, rattling across Southern Africa to the train’s rhythm, sailing up Somes Sound in Maine on a summer evening, dancing on the closing night of the Deck House. Fifty-eight years of debates on local housing ordinances are fully woven into dinner conversations about politics, music, ships’ histories and shared memories. Playing the violin or the triangle with Harley, Ella and Kique at the Freedom Talent Show, they model a commitment to life’s energy, love and endurance.

The portrait has so much to say. Stretching across maritime collections and Naval Museums, his ships, the skies, the waters, celebrate the dance of movement on paper. There is always something new that the artist finds interesting: the composition of a naval parade through the framing streetscape of Malta, the morning colors rippling on Ossipee Lake, an article, a book, a new friend. The portrait invites us to share, to understand, to enjoy, and to love. Join us to celebrate his life in August 2017, in Freedom, N.H. Donations may be made to IHM Maru-a-Pula Art Scholarship.

obit-ea-isl-fryeBAR HARBOR – Signey Frye, known as Sig or Siggie by her friends, died peacefully at home on Nov. 28, 2016. She was born Aug. 14, 1927, in Meriden, Conn., to Henry and Joyce Cerasale.

Sig graduated from high school in Meriden, Conn. She met “the love of her life,” Bob Frye, while working at the Veterans Hospital in Hartford, Conn. Sig and Bob married and had a daughter Sharon. They moved back to Maine, where Bob had grown up. There they were blessed with a daughter Barbara (Bobbie) and a son Robert (Robbie). Sig stayed home with their children selling Avon for a few years, enjoying those she sold to. When Robbie was in school all day she went to work for The Job Corps in Bar Harbor, followed by working at Acadia National Park.

Sig enjoyed the little girls, being a Brownie Girl Scout leader. She belonged to the Eastern Star, the YMCA bowling league — both women’s and couples’ leagues. The teenage girls enjoyed her being on the advisory board of Rainbow Girls. Sig and Bob loved belonging to the snowmobile club at Donnells Pond, also square dancing locally and away with other groups. Each year there were fun times going with friends to the Wayback Balls in Bar Harbor and Hulls Cove. Sig served as secretary of the MDI Hospital Auxiliary for many terms, also secretary of the State of Maine Hospital Auxiliary. She loved volunteering for 35 years at Sonogee and Birch Bay, singing, serving communion and taking down 80 calendars then putting up new ones for the residents at Sonogee, and reading to a blind lady.

Sig and Bob built a lovely camp on Donnells Pond where they enjoyed family and many friends, always serving up wonderfully homemade meals. Bob joked he married her for her cooking.

Signey is survived by her daughter Sharon LeConte and husband, Chris, daughter Barbara Muise, and son Robert E. Frye.; grandchildren: Kimberly Schroeder, Jennifer Hallock, Matthew LeConte, Derek LeConte, Richard Conant, and Justin T. Frye; great-grandchildren Caitlin Schroeder, Kylie Wyskochil, Chelsea Schroeder, and Logan Hallock; her sister Jeanne Watson, step-sister Betty, sister-in-law Sherrill Thone; many dear nieces, nephews, and cousins. Sig was predeceased by her loving husband of 46 years, Bob (Robert S. Frye), also her infant brother Sonny, brother Henry (Jack) Thone, and grandson Justin R. Frye.

A memorial service will be held at the cemetery in Hulls Cove in the spring, details to be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Signey’s name may be made to The MDI Hospital Auxiliary in Bar Harbor.

Arrangements by Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert.

obit-haynesTRENTON – Avril Stuart Haynes passed away peacefully in the evening of Dec. 8 to join her husband, Charles. Her family was at her side throughout the afternoon and evening. Avril was born in 1924 in Dover-Foxcroft to Ross and Luella Stuart. As a child she lived there and Pittsfield prior to moving to Ellsworth in her early teens, where she met her future husband, Charles. After graduating from high school, she attended Farmington State Teachers College and graduated with a degree in home economics in 1946. Upon Charles’ return from his service overseas during World War II, he asked Avril to marry him. The two were married Aug. 24, 1947.

After a brief stay in Ellsworth, they moved to Boston, where Avril worked for many years as the director of Children’s Community Corner Daycare Center in Chelsea, Mass. Both of her children, Martha and Elizabeth, were born in Boston. Every summer the family packed up and headed north the day after school got out to spend the summer at their beloved cottage at Shady Nook in Trenton and visit with the Haynes and Stuart families in Ellsworth. Avril retired from her position as director in 1983. She and Charles moved back to Shady Nook for good in 1987, building their home overlooking Union River Bay.

Once retired, she became a very active member of the First Congregational Church, UCC of Ellsworth, serving on multiple committees. She was also a member of PEO and the Hancock County Quilters. Avril spent much of her free time gardening and quilting, but her joy was spending time with her family and friends.

The last few years of her life were happily spent at Birch Bay Village, where she made many new friends — both staff and residents alike.

Avril was predeceased by her parents, Ross and Luella Stuart, her beloved husband, Charles, and her sister Marvis Steward. She leaves behind her daughter Martha along with her son-in-law, John Cole, and their two children, Kathleen and Ian and Ian’s wife, Norma Madrid, her younger daughter Elizabeth (Libby) and her husband, Robert Mooney. Brockway McMillan

obit-mcmillan-2flagSEDGWICK – Brockway McMillan died at home in Sedgwick on Dec. 3, 2016. Born at home in Minneapolis, Minn., on March 30, 1915, he was the only child of Franklin Richardson McMillan, a civil engineer, and Luvena Lucille Brockway McMillan, a schoolteacher. After living briefly in Philadelphia and Brooklyn, N.Y., the McMillans returned to Minneapolis for several years, finally settling in Hinsdale, Ill., in 1925. There Brockway graduated from high school and studied for two years at the Armour Institute of Technology, transferring to MIT in 1934. He received his S.B. in 1936 and his Ph.D. in 1939, both in mathematics; his thesis, “The calculus of discrete homogenous chaos,” was supervised by Norbert Weiner.

In the fall of 1939, he moved to Princeton University as a postdoctoral fellow. In June 1942, he was introduced by a mutual friend to a mathematician at the Institute for Advanced Study, Elizabeth Audrey Wishard (Ph.D. Radcliffe, 1938). They married on Sept. 2.

Soon after marriage, Brockway joined the Navy, serving as an ensign at the Naval Proving Grounds in Dahlgren, Va., testing weapons and studying their ballistics. In December 1945, Brockway was reassigned to the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos, N.M., where his daughter Sarah was born. After his discharge from the Navy as a first lieutenant in 1946, Brockway joined the Mathematical Research Group at Bell Telephone Laboratories in Murray Hill, N.J. His son Douglas was born in 1947 in nearby Summit, where the McMillans lived until 1979, except for two assignments in Washington, D.C., with the federal government. Gordon was born in Boston in 1952 while Brockway attended the Lincoln Summer Study Group. In Summit, Brockway served on the Board of Education, eventually becoming board president.

At Bell Labs, Brockway’s research produced papers and theorems on Information Theory and Coding. In later years, he fondly recalled his time at Murray Hill, the intellectual stimulation of like-minded colleagues, their noontime experiments with boomerangs and word games and singing in the Murray Hill chorus. In 1955, he left the research group to become assistant director of systems engineering and, in 1959, director of military research.

During the winter of 1958-59, Brockway served as assistant to James Killian, President Eisenhower’s science advisor. In 1961, President Kennedy appointed Brockway as assistant secretary of the Air Force for research and development. Two years later, he became undersecretary of the Air Force, and concurrently the second director of the NRO (National Reconnaissance Office). As director he advocated maintaining the NRO as the primary U.S. agency in space reconnaissance, and presided over the development of a second generation high-resolution imaging system.

Brockway returned to Bell Labs in 1965, serving as vice president for military systems from 1969 until his retirement. In 1967, the McMillans bought an 1820s farmhouse overlooking the Benjamin River in Sedgwick, and summered there regularly until retiring to Sedgwick in 1979.

In retirement, Brockway continued his research and correspondence with other scientists and mathematicians, consulted for the U.S. government and Eastern Airlines, and stayed active in the American Mathematical Society and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). He was a former president of SIAM (1959-60), an IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Fellow, a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of the National Academy of Engineering.

He and Audrey traveled extensively in the United States and Europe, spending one winter in Berkeley, Calif., to give a series of invited lectures at the University of California. At home in his Sedgwick darkroom, he developed and printed thousands of pictures, which he exhibited locally. He served as president of the Sedgwick Brooklin Historical Society and chairman of the Sedgwick Board of Appeals, and enjoyed meeting with the Lunch Bunch in Blue Hill. The couple joined the Wednesday Painters — she painted while he sketched — and sang for many years with the Bagaduce Chorale. In summer, they sailed to the islands around Eggemoggin Reach, often with children and grandchildren in tow. Brockway was a passionate lover of music, coffee and chocolate.

After Audrey died in 2008, Brockway, with help from his son Gordon, continued to live at his farm, enjoying good health until October, when he was placed under hospice care. He fell just after Thanksgiving, breaking his hip, and died at home one week later. He was 101 years and eight months old. He is survived by his three children, Sarah Taylor, her husband, Robert Taylor, Douglas McMillan, his wife, Molly McMillan, and Gordon McMillan, all of Sedgwick, plus seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The family will announce a time this summer to meet, remember and celebrate his life.

LITTLE DEER ISLE – Bonnie Billings, of Little Deer Isle, died peacefully on Dec. 6, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born on Feb. 20, 1943, to Melvin and Kizzie (Black) Billings, in Castine.

After graduating from Deer Isle High School in 1961, Bonnie joined the Navy, where he served on the U.S.S. Talbot County, LST1153. After serving four years, he returned home to Little Deer Isle.

Bonnie married Linda (Sylvester) on Sept. 4, 1964.

After serving in the Navy, Bonnie began working in several of the local mining operations, including Blackhawk, Callahan, and Kerr American. Other careers included lobster and scallop fishing with Linda, and learning to be a welder, working under Herb Grindle. After several years working with Herb, Bonnie opened his own welding and blacksmithing shop, a business he ran successfully for more than 35 years.

Bonnie was always an obsessive tinkerer, taking on and mastering many hobbies over the years. This passion led Bonnie through building muscle cars, street rods, ice boating, ice fishing, and through several renewable energy projects including a homemade windmill and solar hot water.

In 1988, he joined the Deer Isle Fire Department. Through his perseverance and dedication, he was a valued member of the volunteer department, using his skills to create many specialized tools, and to refit equipment and apparatus. Bonnie was always on scene to lend a hand wherever needed.

Bonnie was a proud veteran, and enjoyed the company of his veteran friends.

He is survived by his wife, Linda, brothers Ronald and wife, Genice, Nelson and wife, Leslie, sisters Jo and husband, George Larrabee, Georgia and husband, Brent Morey, as well as an abundance of beloved nieces and nephews.

At Bonnie’s request, there will be no service.
