obit-bonseyflagSURRY – Osmond Clark Bonsey, 88, died Oct. 30, 2016, at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Bangor. He was born July 26, 1928, in Eastbrook, the son of Claude L. and Rena (Wilbur) Bonsey. Raised in Surry, where he met his beloved wife, Ann, Oz was educated in Surry and Ellsworth, graduating from Ellsworth High School in 1946.

Oz enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1946, serving for two years. Upon earning his BA in public management in 1952 from the University of Maine, he embarked on a distinguished career as a town manager in several Maine municipalities, starting in Corinth, where, at 23, he was, according to a news clipping, lauded as the youngest town manager in the world. In 1953, he moved to Mars Hill, and two years later he moved on to Freeport, serving a seven-year tenure as that town’s manager. In 1962, Osmond became Falmouth’s first town manager, staying there until 1974, when he became the executive director of the Greater Portland Council of Governments. Later, he secured his last public administration position, managing the town of Yarmouth for 12 years until his retirement in 1991.

Oz was a longtime member of Lygonia Lodge of Masons in Ellsworth.

In 1965, Osmond was named president of the Maine Town and City Management Association, and in 1983, he was given that organization’s Linc Stackpole Manager of the Year Award. A member of the Maine Municipal Association starting in 1952, Osmond served as its president in 1972. He also served as a Maine Municipal Employees Health Trust trustee from 1992 to 2009.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Oz had stints as a Maine Medical Center trustee, a United Way of Portland board member, and as a Portland Rotary Club member. He was a member of the Cumberland County Extension Association for several years, serving as president in 1970, and he was a member and vice-chairman of the Cumberland County Charter Commission. From 1984 to 1986, he was president of the Area Development Council of Greater Portland.

In the summer between his junior and senior years of college, while he was interning at the Ellsworth City Hall, Osmond joined the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) eventually becoming a Northeast vice president, where he chaired the Ethics Committee. Later he became the organization’s vice president, and in 1987, Osmond earned the distinction of becoming president of the ICMA, that organization’s first president from a city of fewer than 20,000. Oz loved it when, on the occasion of his nomination, Governor John R. McKernan proclaimed Oct. 28, 1987, “Osmond Bonsey Day,” and Oz was very proud of the fact that — at their own expense — all seven of his council members attended his inauguration in Montreal.

That same year, Osmond received both the Greater Portland Council of Governments Regional Citizen of the Year Award, and the Chamber of Commerce of the Greater Portland Region Neal W. Allen Award.

First appointed to Maine’s Board of Environmental Protection by Governor McKernon in 1991, and later reappointed by Governor Angus King, Osmond served on the board for nine years, the last three years as chairman.

In 1991, when Osmond retired to his hometown of Surry, he continued to donate his time and talents to his community and colleagues. An active member and president of both the Surry Community Improvement Association, and the Surry Historical Society, not only did Osmond spearhead a very successful reunion of the Surry Village School, but on the occasion of Surry’s bicentennial in 2003, he researched and wrote the history of that town. He also served as a member of the Executive Advisory Board at Friendship Cottage in Blue Hill, plus for a decade he continued to share his municipal expertise by volunteering as an ICMA/Maine Town and City Management Association Range Rider.

Oz was creative, and he sure liked to have fun, especially if he could combine it with a spin in the spotlight. In the 1990s, he appeared in print ads for L.L. Bean, in a national State Farm commercial, and as an extra, along with Ann, in Stephen King’s movie “Thinner.” When Oz wrote and self-published his memoir “Life is Luck,” he delighted in distributing it to friends and family. He was a bit of a prankster, and the life of many parties where he often recounted “stories” about the people in the room. Some of his very best times were spent with his dearest friends Frank and Connie Harrison, Ted and Dolores Vail, and Harold and Charlotte Mason.

Osmond loved his Red Sox and he idolized Ted Williams. The year Ted Williams served as the Clam Festival’s grand marshal, Oz was Yarmouth’s town manager, and the photograph of the two of them was one of the most precious of his memorabilia, which is saying something, because Osmond documented his considerable accomplishments and his family’s entire life in dozens of scrapbooks and diaries.

Osmond is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ann (McGraw) Bonsey; his daughter Lynn Bonsey and her husband, Gil Lacroix, of Bucksport; his daughter Lorna Healey and her husband, John Healey, of Litchfield; his son Cameron Bonsey of Kennebunk; seven grandchildren of whom he was very proud: Brandon Bonsey of Arlington, Va.; Michael Healey and his wife, Kayla McCaffrey, of Westbrook; Ryan Campbell of Boston; Kourtney Bonsey of Brighton, Mass.; Christopher Healey of Portland, Maine; Hilary Campbell of Portland, Maine; Sam Bonsey of Kennebunk. He is also survived by a great-grandson, William Healey of Westbrook. He was predeceased by his sister Natalie (Bonsey) Hess.

Special thanks to Carolyn Brennan-Alley, Rachel Ambrose, and Sharon Sleeper for their care and compassion during Oz’s final years.

Visiting hours will be held at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5. A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, Nov. 6, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Surry Elementary School, 754 North Bend Road, Surry.

obit-ea-isl-bakerflagSALSBURY COVE/RIVIERA BEACH, FLA. – Paul Emile Baker, 90, beloved husband, father, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, mentor and friend, died peacefully in his home on Nov. 4, 2016.

Paul served our country honorably as a boatswain’s mate in the Pacific during World War II. Honorably discharged from the Navy on May 24, 1946, Paul met the woman who would become his wife of 52 years, Agnes Cecile Guimond, just three days later. Together, they made a life in Plainville, Mass., raising three children and being stalwart members of the community. With his father, Paul spent the next 24 years owning and operating Emile Baker & Son, plastering contractors. As a real estate investor, he built affordable apartments in Plainville, which he owns to this day.

In 1967, Paul and Agnes purchased Hadley Point Campground in Bar Harbor, where he became known for his outgoing personality and witty sayings such as “Keep the plumbing humming.” An avid collector of antique and classic cars, Paul was a proud supporter of the Bar Harbor July 4th celebration, reveling in sharing his enthusiasm with the crowds by entering his Model A and Pontiac Chieftain in the annual parade for more than 25 years. January 2000 began a very tough 18 month period with the death of his beloved Agnes followed by the deaths of his daughter, Paulette Paluga, and his grandson, Jefferey Paluga. A bright note occurred in May 2001 when Paul married Helene (Hardy) Fye.

Paul is survived by his loving wife Helene; sons Richard Baker and wife, Lisa, and Robert Baker and wife, Suzanne; stepchildren Russell Fye and wife, Christina, Samantha Wallace and husband, Lucas; 21 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two brothers Florent and wife, Rosemarie, and Ronald Baker and wife, Therese; son-in-law Joseph Paluga; and more nieces, nephews, and friends than we can count. Along with his first wife, daughter and grandson, he was predeceased by his sister, Mary Jane Baker.

Friends and family are invited to visiting hours from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 11, 2016, at Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert, where services will be held 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 12, 2016, with reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Paulette Paluga Scholarship Fund at the YWCA, 21 Park St., Bar Harbor, ME 04609.

Richard Joseph Hanson

STUART, FLA. – On Oct. 11, 2016, Richard Joseph Hanson passed away after a brief and fast-moving illness at Martin Memorial Hospital.

Richard was born in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Aug. 31, 1955, to Cleonice (Renzetti) and Joseph Hanson and his second “parents,” siblings Judith and Robert. Rich was a born optimist; he is described as a ray of sunshine, a consummate reader and an intellectual from a young age. Rich’s youth was shaped by the generosity of his parents and culinary intensity of his maternal family. His young life was punctuated by Sunday family dinners for 20 in a cold water walk up in the Bronx that would last all afternoon and into the evening. Richard described the day he made his first meatball as the day he knew he would be a chef.

After extended study, Rich graduated from SUNY Oswego in 1979 with lifelong friends and a bachelor’s in political science. He then moved to Boston, where he tried his hand at more standard careers before following his dream to become a chef. He studied just long enough at Newbury Culinary to get a position in 1983 as an apprentice at The Daily Catch, an exemplary fresh Italian restaurant specializing in calamari. It was at the Daily Catch that he gained the moniker “Squid Vicious,” combining his love of cooking and punk. More notably, it was also where he met his true love and partner in life, Cary (Tolman). In Boston, surrounded by family and friends, and with his wife by his side, Rich’s culinary career flourished. Together, Rich and Cary worked at many notable restaurants, and their love for fresh food and quality ingredients began to grow. It wasn’t long before they began to think about moving out of the city in an effort to be closer to food sources, the land and the ocean.

The couple moved to the Blue Hill Peninsula in Maine in 1995. Inspired by a longstanding community that embraced being as close as you can to the origins of your food, Rich worked with farmers and restaurateurs who shared their knowledge and inspired him to delve into historical Maine cuisine and incorporate it into his palate.

Changing seas brought Rich and Cary to refocus and open their own restaurant, Cleonice Mediterranean Bistro, in 2002. The next 13 years were a concentration of energy, inspiration, and incredible community. Finally in charge of his own space and destiny, Chef Rich shined. He strove to make every choice with purpose. He was a pioneer in the local farm-to-table movement, and his dedication to local ingredients with international flavor was recognized twice by the James Beard Foundation.

Rich was a generous and beloved patriarch and mentor to everyone who worked for him. He supported his staff both professionally and emotionally, and truly loved his Cleonice family unconditionally. He was a remarkable person in all the ways that mattered, and he made an indelible imprint on all of those who knew and loved him. There are so many that Rich’s generosity has touched; he was a lifelong champion of anyone who needed a break. He lived by his Socialist Democratic values, stood up for fairness, and looked out for the underdog. If Rich hadn’t been a chef, he would have been a historian, an encyclopedia, an empath, a calculator, a comedian, a writer of great novels, and the worldwide expert on everything. He was an exceptional husband, son, brother, uncle, surrogate father and friend.

A tribute for this beloved man is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 12, at noon at the Ellsworth Unitarian Universalist Church. Attendees are encouraged to bring photos, recipes, memories and mementos to share that will be included in a memorial book.

Jon Christopher Metcalf

obit-metcalfCASTINE – Jon Christopher Metcalf, 40, of Castine, died on Nov. 1, 2016, after suffering a stroke. He was a beloved father, son, brother, partner and friend.

Jon was born on Sept. 29, 1976, in Augusta, the son of Jonathan Metcalf and Ellen Metcalf (now Beerits). He grew up in Alna and Farmington, attending Wiscasset schools and graduating from Mount Blue High School. He studied economics at Syracuse University. After college, he worked at Fidelity Investments in Boston and then earned his MBA from the University of Chicago in 2007.

After business school, Jon became an investment analyst for Green Cay Asset Management, a socially responsible firm, and more recently, Siebels Asset Management Research, both in Nassau, Bahamas. Jon was brilliant, and had a spirited enthusiasm for everything that he did. He was a man with a plan and the courage to pursue it. In one example of Jon’s entrepreneurial spirit, he opened Greenspeed Juice Bar in Blue Hill in 2014.

Jon was loud and loving, the biggest and best presence in any room. His mind was in constant motion; he had strong and thoughtful opinions about everything, and wanted to talk about them with you. Jon found connection and friendship wherever he went. His specialized work enabled him to live all over the world, and he took full advantage of this, living in Nassau, Bahamas; Beijing, China; and Baltimore, Philadelphia and Brooklyn.

In 2007, Jon and his former wife, Anya, welcomed son Adam. Jon and Adam shared an incredible bond and could find fun in anything. Together, they enjoyed kayaking, hiking, throwing the football, and playing frisbee. Jon was a devoted, affectionate parent, and he sought out every opportunity he could for Adam. He loved coaching Adam and other children in soccer and basketball leagues. “Coach Jon” had a special way of making every young athlete feel a valued member of the team.

In 2013, Jon returned to the coast of Maine. He and Jenn, his partner in love and life, had recently moved to Castine. Together with their children, they formed what Jenn has called “a perfectly imperfect family, with no shortage of fun and unconditional love.”

Jon was an avid Syracuse sports fan, and had just celebrated his 40th birthday by attending a Syracuse football game with friends and family. He loved skiing at Sugarloaf and being on the ocean — and especially treasured time in Deer Isle and Nassau. Jon was a voracious reader and dreamed of one day becoming a writer.

Jon is survived by his son, Adam Metcalf; his father, Jonathan Metcalf of Wiscasset; his mother, Ellen Beerits and stepfather, Christopher of Alna; his stepmother, Marjorie Austin of Chesterville; his partner, Jennifer Jackson and her children Quinn and Amelia of Castine; his brother, Matthew Beerits and partner, Heather Stanley, of Jefferson; his sister, Laura Beerits and husband, Sam Scarpino, of Burlington, Vt.; his brother, Andy Metcalf, wife, Tara, and their sons Indy and Mateo of Burlington, Vt.; his former wife, Anya Antonovych, of Blue Hill; and beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins from the Metcalf, Beerits, Welch, and Austin families. Jon also shared special connections with his late grandparents.

A gathering to celebrate Jon’s life will be held on Saturday, Nov. 12, at 2 p.m. at St. Brendan the Navigator Episcopal Church, 627 North Deer Isle Road, Deer Isle. Donations in Jon’s memory may be made to an account established for his son, Adam. Checks may be made out to “Ellen Beerits, Custodian for Adam Metcalf” and sent to the care of First National Bank, P.O. Box 940, Damariscotta, ME 04543.

obit-brouillardCASTINE – Paul Earle Brouillard, 64, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Nov. 12, 2016. Paul was an unforgettable character who was larger than life. He left an indelible mark on everyone he met and was able to bring laughter to almost any situation. He was known for his incredible vision, his humble yet immense love and generosity for others, and his unapologetic honesty. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He took great pride in his three daughters and cherished the time he spent with his grandson teaching him how to play cribbage and gamble, among many other things. obit-faulkinghamflagPROSPECT HARBOR – Eugene “Gene” A. Faulkingham, 79, died peacefully at his home in Prospect Harbor on Nov. 12, 2016, after battling a long, debilitating illness. He was born on Aug. 4, 1937, in Milbridge, son of the late Eva Faulkingham of Prospect Harbor and John Faulkingham of Rockland. As a young boy on Monhegan Island, Gene helped his parents tend the lighthouse beacon and learned the ways of the sea. From there ever after, it was deeply instilled within him. For many years Gene was the shop foreman at Stinson Canning Co., where he oversaw the production of millions of aluminum cans and covers that supported five different sardine packing plants. After his departure from the sardine industry, he helped build boats and was employed with the Gouldsboro School Department for nearly 10 years, where he helped create a healthful learning environment for schoolchildren.

Gene was especially proud of his devotion and sacrifice while serving in the U.S. Navy. He was privileged to be assigned on two aircraft carriers, the USS Coral Sea (CV 43) and the USS Antietam (CV 36), and enjoyed many port experiences around the globe. After his return from duty, he planted deep roots and vowed not to leave his beloved state of Maine again.

Later in life he enjoyed the simple pleasures of working with wood and creating novelties that he sold roadside at his residence and around the world. He was known locally as the “Buoy Man,” where his brightly painted crafts could be found proudly displayed and eagerly welcomed by all.

Gene leaves behind his loving family: wife of 58 years, Betty Lou Tibbetts Faulkingham; daughter Kathy Faulkingham Bickford of Winter Harbor, son Mike Faulkingham of Missouri; brothers Lee Faulkingham of Birch Harbor and Rexford Faulkingham of Steuben; sister Cynthia Grindle of Florida, as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He left an indelible impact on the members of the community and will be greatly missed by his family and many close friends.

Graveside services for family and friends will be held on Saturday, Nov. 19, at the Prospect Harbor Cemetery.
