obit-luckSOUTHWEST HARBOR – Ingrid Anna Fenske Luck, 92, died peacefully in her home in Southwest Harbor on Sept. 23, 2016, with family at her side. She was born Nov. 29, 1923, in Potsdam, Germany, daughter of Karl Otto Fenske and Anna Schultz Fenske. She learned to speak fluent English and French, and had hoped to learn more languages and become one of the first female professional translators in Germany, but the start of World War II put an end to that ambition and she spent the war as a schoolteacher.

In the same month the war ended, she met her future husband, Julius O. F. Luck, who was one of the first Americans to enter Berlin. Ingrid ended up in East Germany, and was unable to return to the U.S. with Julius when he was sent back. It took him over two years to certify that she was neither a Nazi nor a Communist, and in May 1948 she flew in to Idlewild Airport and they were married.

Julius was a professor at Fairleigh Dickinson University and Ingrid returned to school, earning her Master’s in English Literature. She taught English at Freehold High School in New Jersey for two years until 1970, when Julius decided to try raising goats and selling goat milk and cheese from a farm in Lamoine. They were way ahead of their time. In 1980, they returned to New Jersey, where Ingrid taught English at Roxbury High School until her retirement in 2001 at the age of 77. Julius died of cancer in 2005, and Ingrid returned to Maine to be with her children and grandchildren.

At the end, her head was still filled with stories, poems, and songs — in many languages — and she delighted in reciting or singing them.

She is survived by her four sons: J. Alexander and R. Gilbert of Southwest Harbor; C. Norman and his wife, Dianne, of Buffalo, N.Y.; and Christopher R. and his wife, Nia, of Somesville. Also her four grandchildren: Melissa and her husband, Jerry Rauen, of Buffalo, N.Y.; Morgan Luck and his wife, Nan, of Westbrook; Madison Luck of Montreal, Canada; and Samantha Luck, of Fredonia, N.Y.

A commemoration of her life will take place sometime in December when we can gather most of our family together.

In lieu of flowers or anything else, please donate anything you can to The Southwest Harbor Public Library, 338 Main St., Southwest Harbor, ME 04679 or The Hancock County SPCA, 141 Bar Harbor Road, Trenton, ME 04605. Those were her two favorite causes, and they’re worthy ones.

obit-youngCOREA – Emmanuel (Manny) Vincent Young, 69, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sept. 12, 2016. He was born and raised in Maine, April 17, 1947, to Vincent and Noelle Young. He was a lifelong resident of Corea and was a beloved member of the community.

Manny spent his entire life on the sea. From lobster fishing as a young boy and into adulthood when he helped his father fish, to a long career working in the engine rooms of oil tankers, to spending his leisure time in a fishing boat, Manny was always on the water. Nothing made him happier than trolling for togue on Tunk Lake with his father and close friend, Bud Crowley, both of whom have been waiting for him in the beyond for some time now.

He even met his loving wife, Maria de Fatima, on a training cruise while at Maine Maritime Academy, from which he was a graduate. He is survived by wife, Maria, as well as his son Sheldon Young and his wife, Jamie; daughter Maria Jordan and husband, Glen; granddaughter Gabrielle Jordan; brother Arthur Young and his wife, Rose; and many other relatives in Maine, other parts of the country, and even in Belgium (where his mother was born). His mother, father, and brother, Mark Young, predeceased him.

Everyone knew Manny for his big laugh, sense of humor, and booming voice. While sometimes gruff on the outside, his heart was one of giving. Volunteering at Bingo games (he had a great “calling” voice and he loved to play, too!), being a proud member of the Knights of Pythias, and volunteer driving for many years at WHCA were all part of who he was.

We invite you to join us in celebrating his life on Oct. 14, 2016, 6 p.m. at the Knights of Pythias Hall at 947 US-1, Gouldsboro, ME 04607. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Manny’s name to WHCA, The Knights of Pythias, or the EMMC Foundation.

Ryan attended the University of Maine as an English major. While there he participated in the Onward Program and loved his Onward Family. Ryan was a loving, caring son and friend. He enjoyed spending time listening to music, reading and spending time with his friends. He considered most to be family. He was always joyful and made everyone he met a better person.

Liliane Kell

obit-kellELLSWORTH – Liliane Kell, 82, died peacefully on Sept. 26, 2016, at her home in Ellsworth, with loving family members at her side. She was born June 14, 1934, in the Principality of Monaco, the daughter of Jean Antoine Aperlo and Inès Biagini.

Her childhood was spent in northern Italy during World War II, and afterward in the fishing village of Villefranche-sur-mer on the French Riviera. At age 20, she immigrated to the United States on board the Andrea Doria, joining her mother and stepfather in Manasquan, N.J. Always a fine athlete, Liliane met her future husband, Doug Kell, at the local roller skate rink there. They were married three months later, and would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Oct. 1 of this year. Twenty years later, Liliane and her family moved to Maine, living first in Brewer before relocating to Ellsworth in 1995.

Liliane’s flawless English was spoken with a lovely lilt, and her full name itself is like a melody: Liliane Jacqueline Angèle Olga Aperlo Kell. Her life was filled with many friends and multiple interests and pursuits, but most important to her was her family. She was above all a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She created a beautiful home and garden for them, was a wonderful cook, and delighted in sewing and knitting clothing for her children and grandchildren. She was active in the local French group, an avid member of a tennis group with whom she continued to play weekly as recently as five months ago, and served for several years as a member of the board of trustees of The Grand. She maintained close ties with her family in France, and with her husband traveled extensively in Europe and the Far East.

Liliane was an accomplished artist in many styles and media: calligraphy, book making, decorative paper making, painting, and sewing. She studied with some of the best calligraphers in the country, and was known for her flower painting and color palette, with her remarkable sense of color and design showing the influence of her early life in southern France. In her typically generous fashion, she always shared her skills with others, teaching a monthly art class in her studio for over 20 years. Her own art was often on exhibit locally, and she leaves behind a body of work that her family and friends will treasure.

Liliane showed grace in her dealings with people and was a devoted friend to many who will miss her greatly. Most of all she will be missed by her family, especially her grandchildren, with whom she shared many hours and special activities.

Family members include her husband, Doug; children Dugald Kell Jr. and his wife, Jeannie, of Surry, Philip Kell of Ellsworth, Eric Kell and his wife, Deborah, of Newburyport, Mass., and Carol-Lee Elkington and her husband, Christian, of Kennebunkport; and eight grandchildren, Braden, Ethan, and Emma Kell of Surry, Ryan and Rebecca Kell of Newburyport, Mass., and Christian, Tyler, and Elizabeth Elkington of Kennebunkport. Liliane was predeceased by her daughter Michèle. In addition, Liliane is survived by Janet Kiely, whom she thought of as a daughter, and her husband, David, of Brick, N.J., as well as their children, Michele and Melissa, and their families.

In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to The American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22478, Oklahoma City, OK 73123 or Hancock County Home Care & Hospice, P.O. Box 655, Ellsworth, ME 04605

Arrangements are in the care of Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth. Condolences may be expressed at www.jordanfernald.com.

At Liliane’s request, her ashes will be scattered where those of her daughter, Michèle, were placed.

In lieu of a formal service, Liliane’s many friends are invited to remember her at an ice cream social to be held Saturday, Oct. 8, from 1 to 4 p.m., at the family home in Ellsworth.

obit-fitchELLSWORTH – Dorothy R. “Bam” Fitch, 91, died Oct. 3, 2016, at an Ellsworth hospital. She was born July 19, 1925, on Great Cranberry Island, the daughter of Gustav Nils and Ruth Frances (Stanley) Peterson.

Dot graduated from Pemetic High School in Southwest Harbor in 1944 as Warren Stanley’s wartime bride. They were married for five years during his stint in the U.S. Coast Guard and later as a fisherman. Warren died at sea aboard his trawler in 1948.

Dorothy and Merritt P. Fitch married in 1950 after meeting at the Hancock House, where Merritt both cooked and sang. He later became a policeman, and Hancock County sheriff. While raising an ever-expanding family, Dorothy served as the jail cook, court officer, matron and secretary at the District Attorney’s Office. Merritt and Dot were married for 35 years until his death in 1984.

Dot served on many county committees and was known as the Daffodil Lady at the courthouse. Upon retirement from the District Attorney’s Office in 1989, she and Fred Beal made a life together, enjoying their time spent at Lord’s Beach in Trenton and in Treasure Island, Fla. They had 10 wonderful years together until his death in 1999.

Dorothy was as vibrant as the vivid red eyeglasses she wore. She found joy in life in the circles of friends she made, Pemetic High School classmates, bowling buddies, Sylvia’s muffin ladies, and Community of Christ Fellowship. Dorothy loved to “hit it big” at bingo, to play the lottery, and to savor the thrill of victory with Boston sports teams. Her large extended family feels they hit the biggest jackpot with Dorothy as their matriarch.

Dot is survived by four sons, Gregory Stanley and wife, Janet, of Surry, Allen Fitch of Ellsworth, Terry Fitch and wife, Debby, of Hancock, Ernest Fitch and wife, Janis, of Castine; one daughter, Warrene Stanley Carriere and husband, Gerard, of Lamoine; nine grandchildren, Rebecca Blanchard, Lynne Fitch, David Fitch and Lucas Carriere, Christopher Fitch and wife, Christy, Kimberly Fitch and companion, Tim Philbrook, Erik Fitch and wife, Meghan, Katie Fitch and companion, Brian Earles, and Ernie Fitch and his wife, Summer; great-grandchildren, Alexandra, Brock, Lily, Addison, Connor, McKinley, Phineas, Lincoln, Phoebe and Lilith and a special family member, Thelma S. Beal. She was predeceased by three brothers, Philmore and Neil Peterson and Morris Alley; a grandson, Toby Fitch; stepson, Danny Fitch; daughters-in-law, Patricia Fitch and Joanne Fitch.

Friends are invited to visit 1 to 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, 2016, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, where a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. A reception will follow the service. Private interment will be at Woodbine Cemetery.

obit-benjamin-ea-islPRETTY MARSH – Maura M. Benjamin died peacefully Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2016, at her seaside farm, “Maura’s Meadow,” in Pretty Marsh. She was 81.

Mrs. Benjamin loved the flowers in the field, a succession of Bichon Frise dogs (jokingly described by a sign on the barn door as “bête et méchant,” or “stupid and malicious,” somewhat inaccurate given the stealth and cunning of their persistent and focused malice toward rugs), the sea and her adopted Maine home.

A graduate of Vassar College, and former assistant editor of Better Homes & Gardens magazine, she was a representative of Christie’s in Palm Beach, and served on the committee for the Susan G. Komen Foundation’s “Race for the Cure.” Mrs. Benjamin was the honorary founder and former board member of Wayside House, and received its highest volunteer honor, the Butterfly Award. For many years, she served on the advisory board of the Hanley-Hazeldon Foundation. She was a member of the health grants committee of the Community Foundation of Palm Beach and Martin counties, and established a scholarship fund through the foundation. Mrs. Benjamin also served as an advisory trustee of the Society of the Four Arts. Maura’s many accomplishments in life included receipt of the Women of Distinction award from Palm Beach Atlantic University and her term as president of the Garden Club of Mount Desert.

Born and raised in New York, she later moved to Florida, where she met her love of over 40 years, William E. Benjamin II, who predeceased her by two years, and with whom she will rest, along with her mother and childhood nanny, on the farm she loved.

She is survived by her only child, Jamie Riordan; five stepchildren, William E. Benjamin III, Beatrice Benjamin, Alexandra Benjamin, Christopher Benjamin and Anne Green; and grandchildren, Katie, Sam and Jack Riordan.

Memorial services will be held in 2017.

Donations in her name may be made to the Maine Community Foundation, 245 Main St., Ellsworth, ME 04605; the SPCA, 141 Bar Harbor Road, Trenton, ME 04605; or to the Sammy Fund, care of Acadia Veterinary Clinic, 21 Federal St., Bar Harbor, ME 04609.

obit-dudley-ea-islBAR HARBOR – Bettina Dudley was born Elizabeth Norris Corning on June 17, 1938, in Albany, N.Y., to Erastus Corning II and Elizabeth Platt Corning. After obtaining a bachelor’s degree in English literature at Cornell University, she married fellow student Theodore (Ted) Robert Dudley and moved to Edinburgh, Scotland, for four years, and then relocated to Boston and ultimately to Maryland in 1966. She had one son, Theodore Robert Jr., in Scotland and another, Erastus Christopher (Topher) in Boston.

While raising her family, she worked part time at the University of Maryland and also pursued graduate studies, earning an M.S. in botany and a Ph.D. in science education. For many summers, she taught at the Children’s School of Science in Woods Hole, the history of which was the topic of her doctoral dissertation. Later, she worked in environmental consulting and also as an assistant to her college friend Janet Reno at the U.S. Department of Justice.

In 1994, she moved permanently to Mount Desert Island where she lived for 22 years, volunteering with Hospice, the Whole Health Center, the College of the Atlantic and other community organizations. These were the happiest years of her life, as she was regularly able to write poetry, teach writing, meditate daily in her Buddhist practice, spend time at her camp on Webbs Pond, go bird-watching (including trips to Borneo and the Peruvian Amazon), and grow ever more tranquil. Bettina died peacefully at her home in September.

She is survived by her older son Robert, his wife, June Han Dudley, their daughter Victoria Han and soon-to-be born son Edward Schoodic (all of Kensington, Calif.), and by her younger son Topher, his wife, Mary Fleming Dudley, and their children Christopher Erastus, Elizabeth Anne, Mary Olivia, and Joshua Nathaniel (all of Montgomery, Ala.). Bettina’s surviving family members also include her brother Erastus Corning III of Charleston, S.C., her niece Amy Corning and her two children Maximilian and Alexander Broening (all of Richmond, Va.), and her nephew Jonathan Corning of Washington D.C.

Bettina was a loving mother and grandmother, a biologist, an author, and a poet. She participated fully in life in this world, life in nature, life of the mind, and life of the spirit. We, her family and friends, were blessed to love and be loved by her, and miss her immensely.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Birdsacre-Stanwood Wildlife Sanctuary (www.birdsacre.com) in Ellsworth, in honor of Bettina’s love of birds, passion for conservation, and commitment to local community.

A gathering and celebration of her life will be held at the Northeast Harbor Library at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6.

A family memorial at Webbs Pond is planned for July 2017.
