NORTHEAST HARBOR
Lloyd E. Norwood Jr., 78, passed away surrounded by his loving family at Mount Desert Island Hospital on Thursday, March 22, following a brief illness. He was born on June 15, 1939, the son of Lloyd Norwood Sr. and Janet Farnsworth Norwood.
Lloyd is survived by his wife of 60 years, Judith Stanley Norwood, and their three children, Cheryl Norwood Kennedy and her husband, Bill, of Kennebunk, Robert Norwood and his wife, Christine, of Northeast Harbor and Teresa Norwood Clark and her friend Bradley Gray of Northeast Harbor. He loved to spend time with his six grandchildren, Christopher, Andrew, Travis, Sarah, Mea and Spencer, regaling them with stories and teaching them all kinds of mischievous deeds to try out. He is also survived by his three sisters, Myrle Crockett of Bar Harbor, Janett Norwood Muise and her husband, Sherwood, of Otter Creek and Maybelle Montgomery of Tennessee. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Harvey Norwood and wife, Lucille, brother-in-law Leslie Crockett, brother-in-law Monty Montgomery, father-in-law and mentor Woodbury (Toad) Stanley and mother-in-law Lula McNaughton Stanley.
Lloyd grew up on a farm and learned early the value of hard work and perseverance. He began work at the Billings and Hamblen Construction Co. as a young man, later moving to the Lane Construction Co. building the runway at Dow Air Force Base in Bangor. He started out in the electrical field when he began working for W. A. Stanley Electrical and quickly became the president and owner in 1966. During his tenure, W. A. Stanley grew its reputation as a company known for fair practices and quality workmanship. He remained active in the business, mentoring many young electricians along the way. He was a member of the Northeast Harbor Fire Department from 1958 to 2001 eventually becoming assistant chief of the department. As an EMT for 35 of the years, he became a lifelong member of the Northeast Harbor Ambulance Service in 2001. Lloyd also served as the town fire warden for many years.
Lloyd was an active member of the Mount Desert Island Lions Club, from 1974 to present, twice serving as King Lion. He was instrumental in starting the Harvey Norwood Scholarship fund presented annually to an MDI graduate.
Lloyd loved to be around people and will always be remembered for his laughter and ability to tell a story. In the summer season, one could always find him on his trusty John Deere mower, with the bilateral cup holders, tending his beloved lawns. He was always a tinkerer, never came across a project he wouldn’t tackle, after some thinking and talking it over, of course. Lloyd’s love of music was evident in his extensive collection of Big Band albums and his ever willingness to break into a song when the opportunity presented itself. His love for the island where he was born, the town where he lived and the people who helped build the community where he raised a family was always foremost in his thoughts and actions. Lloyd always thought of those less fortunate and, with the willing assistance of his fellow Lions and business members of the MDI community, would make sure they would be given a helping hand whenever asked.
While Lloyd’s talents were many and varied, he always got the most enjoyment working with his hands, particularly in his woodworking shop. His craftsmanship was second to none and he applied it with the same skill and caring for business clients, as he did for family and friends. Lloyd was truly a talented and caring individual who will be missed terribly by many, none more so than his loving family.
A memorial service will be held in St. Mary’s By the Sea Episcopal Church, Northeast Harbor, Maine on April 8, 2018, at 2 p.m.
