Hanne Lewis, 88, of West Lafayette, Ind., formerly of Maine, passed away on Thursday, July 21, 2022, at University Place in West Lafayette.
She was born Aug. 14, 1933, in Copenhagen, Denmark, to the late James and Inge (Rasmussen) van Hauen. Hanne was a graduate of Oregard Gymnasium in the Gentofte region of Copenhagen, Denmark, and continued her education at the University of Maine-Orono, where she earned her master’s degree. She loved her career as a high school foreign language teacher at Orono High School in Maine. On Sept. 23, 1989, she married Joseph Henry Lewis. Joseph preceded her in death on March 23, 2007.
Hanne believed a person is never done learning and she really enjoyed learning new things. She also enjoyed gardening and spinning on the spinning wheel.
She is survived by her three children, William R. Anderson of Maine, Karen E. Robertson and Charles A. Anderson of Lafayette; and several grandchildren; her brother, Knud van Hauen of Fredriksberg, Denmark; and a cousin, Birte Reed Rasmussen of Horsholm, Denmark.
Along with her husband, Joseph H. Lewis, she was preceded in death by her parents, James and Inge van Hauen.
Hanne’s wishes were that no services would be held.
She will be laid to rest at a later date in Mills Cemetery in Springfield, Maine.
