Betty Carter (Elizabeth Cottle Carter) has gone on to glory and is now with the Lord and reunited with her dear husband, Billy (Ralph I. Carter). She was the core of our five-generation family, the blessed common thread of love and support that tied us together and the sweet young mother that long ago started it all. We who grievously miss her take comfort in the fact that Betty and Billy are now in Heaven continuing an adventure that started in 1948.
In the 1950s, she lived at Spring River Lake in a tent with three little boys for six weeks every summer. As the family grew it was camping with children and grandchildren on islands off the Maine coast. In their 60s they were part of four generations of our family tooling around Europe in an old Morris. When Betty and Billy were approaching 80, they took a pickup camper to Labrador and then caught the supply ship to Nain. They liked adventure, and they passed it on. Descendants have hiked the Appalachian Trail and been to the South Pole.
Betty was born at the historic Hagan Hospital in Lamoine on Feb. 8, 1932. She was a Cub Scout den mother, a member of the Ellsworth Falls Mothers Club, past matron of the Eastern Star and a member of the Ellsworth Falls Congregational Church. She loved going to the LST-32 U.S. Navy ship reunions and fellowshipping with the shipmates and families of WWII and Korean War veterans. She was also an original member of the family breakfast club at Sylvia’s Cafe for the past 20-plus years. Betty leaves behind sons Bruce (Margaret) and Larry (Jane) and daughter Alison Cowen (Jim). She was predeceased by son Keith Carter and brother Bob Cottle. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. Donations in Betty’s name may be made to the Ellsworth Falls Congregational Church/United Church of Christ.
