Estelle Lorraine Waterman passed away in early June. Born on June 15, 1939, in Boston, Mass., she grew up in nearby Dorchester. After marrying Roger, she and her husband settled for a time in Holliston, Mass., and began raising a family. In Holliston, Lorraine was known for her choir directing skills, once receiving a standing ovation in church for the choir’s performance of Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus” and her support of area firefighters. Be it dead of night, the heat of summer or cold of winter, Lorraine would arrive to offer food and drink to support those on the front lines.
Lorraine often took the family on “adventures” — restaurants with odd histories, new family activities, locations with beautiful sites. It was on one of these adventures that the family discovered and fell in love with Mount Desert Island in Maine and in the mid-1970s the family packed up and moved to Northeast Harbor. There she and Roger built The Northeast Harbor Store — the department store in one room — a staple on Main Street for over 25 years, as was her storefront flower garden. Upon retiring she and Roger moved to Osborn, where Lorraine expanded her gardens to include vegetables, apples, strawberries, blueberries, and of course, lots of flowers. She also dabbled in forestry management to properly maintain and manage wood harvesting on the property. In her spare time Lorraine followed in her father’s footsteps, a Boston firefighter, to train as a volunteer firefighter and EMT for the Osborn Volunteer Fire Department.
Lorraine is survived by her husband, Roger, children Michael and Jane, grandchildren Allison and Ryan and sisters Barbara and Carol.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations to be sent to the Osborn Volunteer Fire Department, 10 Cemetery Road, Hancock, ME 04640.
