
Brooklin
Arnold Compton Hanson, former resident of Brooklin and North Brooklin, Hancock County, passed away on Jan. 19 at 96 years of age. Arnold was born in Boston and raised in Milton, Mass., where he met and married his childhood sweetheart, Lorraine Alsen. During WWII he served as 2nd lieutenant in the Army Air Corps in Italy and North Africa. He received his BA cum laude from Boston University and his master’s degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. Arnold was a career diplomat with the U.S. State Department for 30 years. His tours of duty abroad included Ecuador, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, India and Myanmar.
In 1977, Arnold and Lorraine retired to Maine, where he served as first selectman for the town of Brooklin for nine years. Arnold was an avid gardener and he and Lorraine were active in many community activities, as well as continuing their global travels. His last years were spent in Exeter, N.H.
Arnold was predeceased by Lorraine and second wife Jacqueline Bryan-Tobias. He is survived by daughters Cheryl of Hermon and Laurel of Oakland, son Stephen of Hansville, Wash., two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
