Nancy Jean (McDevitt) Powles of Nashua, N.H., passed peacefully after a long battle with cancer on Saturday, Dec. 26, 2020. She was born on Nov. 11, 1944, in Cherryfield, the youngest of six to Nolan McDevitt and Alfreda (Morse) McDevitt.
Nancy grew up in Franklin and graduated from Ellsworth High School. She and her husband of over 50 years met and married in Maine and moved to New Hampshire following Ray’s Navy retirement. Nancy was primarily a devoted homemaker, although she did work for a number of years as a receptionist for a dental office. Nancy was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years, for which she was very proud and honored. Throughout the years, any and all free time was always spent back in Maine with the family and, after final retirement, Nancy and Ray would spend as much time as they could at the family homestead in Franklin. Nancy will be remembered for her sweetness and spunkiness. The grandchildren and pets were well spoiled around “Nanny” and they could never do any wrong. She was full of life. She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond C. Powles Jr., in July 2016.
Nancy was predeceased by her siblings Malcolm, Margaret, Clarence, Mora and James. She leaves behind her children Raymond C. Powles III of Goffstown, N.H., and Stephanie J. Murphy and her husband, William D. Murphy Sr., of Pepperell, Mass. She also leaves behind three grandchildren, Caitlin J. Powles of Goffstown, N.H.; Nicole L. Murphy and William D. Murphy Jr., both of Pepperell, Mass., and one great-grandchild, Ayda Lee of Pepperell, Mass., and many very special nieces and nephews who were so dear to her heart.
A private memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in her memory to the Order of the Eastern Star or the Shriners. Arrangements under the direction of the McGaffigan Family Funeral Home, Pepperell, Mass. Please see www.mcgaffiganfuneral.com for online memorial.
