Wallace (Wally) Crawford Palmer, 86, of Brooksville died peacefully at home on Oct. 3, 2019, surrounded by family and his beloved dog Sassy. Wally was born in Buffalo, N.Y., on March 17, 1933, to Wallace and Margaret Palmer. He grew up in Princeton, N.J., and graduated from the Lawrenceville School in 1952 and Union College in 1956. It was during college that he met the love of his life, Jane, and they married a week after graduation. He served in the Army from 1956 to 1960. He began his career working for the John A. Roebling Steel Co. in Trenton, N.J., and then in Cleveland, Ohio. Upon retirement, the family moved to Brooksville, where Wally and Jane found their true home and lifelong friends.
An avid outdoorsman, Wally was very proud of his involvement with many conservation groups, amongst them Ducks Unlimited and the Atlantic Salmon Federation. He served four years as the chairman of the Acadia Chapter of Ducks Unlimited, while being instrumental in the construction of the Atlantic Salmon Heritage Museum, the only of its kind in the United States, located at the Craig Brook Hatchery in Orland. He was especially proud of his involvement in the cultivation and releasing of salmon fry into various rivers with many local public schools. Wally was also commodore of the Bucks Harbor Yacht Club from 1989-1991.
Wally was predeceased by his parents and sister, Susan Robertson, and nephew, Duncan. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jane, son Mark and his wife, Kim, of Eastham, Mass., and daughter Julie and her husband, Jim, of Hudson, N.H. He also leaves behind five beloved grandchildren, Jack, Chelsea, Taylor and her husband, Dan, Maggie and Sam, along with nine nieces and nephews.
There will be a private family burial service with a celebration of his life at a later date.
