SOUTHWEST HARBOR
Ida Mae Smallidge, of Southwest Harbor, died Aug. 29, 2019. She was 81. Ida was born in Bar Harbor on July 4, 1938, to Roy and Jennie Jenkins of Northeast Harbor. Ida grew up in Northeast Harbor and graduated from Mount Desert High School and pursued her education and calling as a nurse.
She married James Smallidge in November 1961 and traveled the globe with him as a Navy wife. They had three children, James Jr., Michael and Nathan. They divorced in 1980 and she returned to MDI to work as a nurse at MDI Hospital for over 20 years and found joy in her boys and caring for others. Ida volunteered her nursing skills and traveled to Central and South America with Doctors Without Borders, providing medical care. When she wasn’t working, Ida loved to hike the trails of MDI, quilting and painting.
She is survived by her sister Nancy (husband, Keith); her three sons: James (wife, Mary), Michael (wife, Laurie) and Nathan; three grandchildren (Alexandria, Connor and Olivia) and one great-grandson (Remington); as well as several nieces and nephews.
There will be a private family burial followed by a memorial welcoming her many friends and family at the Neighborhood House in Northeast Harbor on Oct. 19 from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.
