ELLSWORTH
Master Chief Robert Walter Field, 91, peacefully passed away at his home on Jan. 31, 2019, with son Robert Jr. and daughter-in-law Shirley by his side.
Robert was born in Jericho, Vt., to Ravenell and Emily Field, on July 30, 1927.
He graduated from Essex Junction High School 1944, and joined the United States Navy shortly after graduation. Early in his naval career he was stationed in Okinawa, Korea, Brazil, California and Adak, Alaska. Then, while stationed at NSGA Winter Harbor, he met and married the love of his life, Maxine L. Crowley, on Aug. 16, 1948.
Together they traveled the world to his many naval stations, starting with NSGA Winter Harbor and over 26 years to Hawaii, Narragansett, Long Island, Germany, Turkey, Morocco, Scotland and Maryland. During their travels they also built a family, having five children. When he retired from the Navy they returned to Maine and settled in Ellsworth to raise the three boys left at home. Many evenings while stationed overseas he entertained us kids with slide shows of those travels and popcorn.
He was a longtime member of the Masons and belonged to the Naval Cryptologic Veterans Association. Through NCVA reunions he and Maxine kept in touch with many of their Navy friends. They looked forward to traveling to these reunions that took place in many different states.
After his naval career, Robert spent 10 years working for the State Liquor Store in Ellsworth.
Robert’s favorite place was the camp they bought when he retired. There his legacy of family togetherness was instilled in his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed watching the grandchildren discover the wonders of nature at camp. Many summer mornings were spent watching the sun come up over the trees while fishing with sons and grandchildren. He was also a fabulous wood craftsman; it gave him great pleasure to create gifts for the family. Other hobbies were coin and stamp collecting, doing jigsaw puzzles and putting together models of aircraft. His family was the joy of his life.
Robert was predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Maxine Louise Field, his son David Alan Field, his brother Richard Irving Field and his parents, Ravenell and Emily Field.
He is survived by his sister Eris Alma (Field) Perese of New York, daughter Carol and her husband Carl Donnelly, sons Robert W Field Jr. and wife, Shirley, Gary R. Field and wife, Karen, William Field and wife, Callie. Grandchildren, Robert Haga, Melissa and husband, Steve Weslow, Erica and husband, William Wilbur, Megan Field, Ashley Horn, Maxwell Field, David Field and wife, Natasha, Richard Field, Chelsea Field, Alexandria and husband, Joshua Hiter, MacKenzie Field and Emily Field. He is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren and 10 nieces and nephews.
A double graveside memorial for Robert and Maxine Field at Woodbine Cemetery is planned for Aug. 3, 2019.
