BLUE HILL

William J. Rosborough, born Dec. 29, 1926, in Philadelphia, Pa., died in Blue Hill on Jan. 6, 2019, at the age of 92.

Will leaves Maren, his wife of 68 years, and his children, John (Mac) Rosborough and wife, Janet, William (Bill) Rosborough and wife, Heather, Jean Rosborough and husband, James. When he and Maren retired to Maine he began volunteering at the Tree of Life Food Pantry in Blue Hill, where he later became chairman of the board for many years. He loved sailing his wooden boat in Contention Cove. One of his favorite sayings, when asked how he was doing, was to reply “above ground and taking nourishment.”

He will be greatly missed for his love of people, his interest in the lives of his children and grandchildren and for his love of life.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Tree of Life, Will Rosborough Scholarship Fund, Box 1329, Blue Hill, ME 04614 or St. Francis by the Sea Episcopal Church, Box 76, Blue Hill, ME 04614.

ELLSWORTH

Master Chief Robert Walter Field, 91, peacefully passed away at his home on Jan. 31, 2019, with son Robert Jr. and daughter-in-law Shirley by his side.

Robert was born in Jericho, Vt., to Ravenell and Emily Field, on July 30, 1927.

He graduated from Essex Junction High School 1944, and joined the United States Navy shortly after graduation. Early in his naval career he was stationed in Okinawa, Korea, Brazil, California and Adak, Alaska. Then, while stationed at NSGA Winter Harbor, he met and married the love of his life, Maxine L. Crowley, on Aug. 16, 1948.

Together they traveled the world to his many naval stations, starting with NSGA Winter Harbor and over 26 years to Hawaii, Narragansett, Long Island, Germany, Turkey, Morocco, Scotland and Maryland. During their travels they also built a family, having five children. When he retired from the Navy they returned to Maine and settled in Ellsworth to raise the three boys left at home. Many evenings while stationed overseas he entertained us kids with slide shows of those travels and popcorn.

He was a longtime member of the Masons and belonged to the Naval Cryptologic Veterans Association. Through NCVA reunions he and Maxine kept in touch with many of their Navy friends. They looked forward to traveling to these reunions that took place in many different states.

After his naval career, Robert spent 10 years working for the State Liquor Store in Ellsworth.

Robert’s favorite place was the camp they bought when he retired. There his legacy of family togetherness was instilled in his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed watching the grandchildren discover the wonders of nature at camp. Many summer mornings were spent watching the sun come up over the trees while fishing with sons and grandchildren. He was also a fabulous wood craftsman; it gave him great pleasure to create gifts for the family. Other hobbies were coin and stamp collecting, doing jigsaw puzzles and putting together models of aircraft. His family was the joy of his life.

Robert was predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Maxine Louise Field, his son David Alan Field, his brother Richard Irving Field and his parents, Ravenell and Emily Field.

He is survived by his sister Eris Alma (Field) Perese of New York, daughter Carol and her husband Carl Donnelly, sons Robert W Field Jr. and wife, Shirley, Gary R. Field and wife, Karen, William Field and wife, Callie. He is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren and 10 nieces and nephews.

A double graveside memorial for Robert and Maxine Field at Woodbine Cemetery is planned for Aug. 3, 2019.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Ethan Allen Lodge No. 72 (115 Merchants Row, Williston, VT 05495) scholarship fund would be appreciated.

HANCOCK

Ronald Larry Pinkham, 63, died Jan. 22, 2019, after battling bone cancer. He was fourth born of 10 kids on Aug. 14, 1954, in Bangor, to Maxine (Urann) Pinkham and Harvey Pinkham. Ronnie grew up in Hancock, “Egypt Stream,” and built his home in Hancock.

Ron loved being on the ocean, whether it was fishing for fun or when he was out there making a living as a commercial fisherman. Ron was also a talented welder fabricator.

He enjoyed tending to his “garden” and his chickens. Time spent with friends and family always proved to be a good time — many stories shared seemed to have Ronnie up to something, that had others questioning if it was a good idea. He always had a smile under his big mustache.

Ron will be missed by his nine siblings, Douglas, Harvey, Susan, Evelyn, Nancy, David, Charlie, Brenda and Dwayne, along with many nieces, nephews and friends.

The family would like to thank his nephew, Matthew Chick, for the time and care you gave Ron during his battle with cancer. Your friendship with Ronnie over the years meant a lot to him.

Thank you, Northern Light Hospice, for providing exceptional care and support to Ron, and the support you gave to family and friends.

A party will be held this spring in Ron’s honor.

ORLAND

Sam Colby Crawford

Sam’s life was cut way too short due to a tragic fire on Feb. 4, 2019. He was born on Jan. 11, 1978, in the middle of a winter hurricane. That set the pace for his whirlwind short life. He lived his life to the fullest. His family was his world, second came his animals; everything else had to follow. Anyone who knew Sam could see how big his heart was. If he saw a stray animal in need of a home, it came. He also did the same for many of his friends. If he thought he could help in some way he would try.

Sam was self-employed as S.C. Crawford General Contractor for over 20 years in the MDI and Downeast area, even as far out to some of the islands and Fort Knox for long cold winter pointing granite. He loved a challenge and took pride in his work.

Growing up in North Orland he loved his trucks and MUD RUNNING. Sam was the original Dukes of Hazzard learning to drive on North Orland’s dirt road and boy could he throw a party.

Sam attended Bucksport High School and HCTC, graduating in 1996, and attended EMCC to become a machinist but could not stand to be cooped up inside.

He leaves behind his parents, Steve and Darla Crawford of North Orland, his fiancée Cassandra Morse (Casey) of North Orland, his children; Denika Cunningham and partner Mike Darragh and granddaughter Riley and Negan a new grandson coming in March of Eddington, Mariah Jerome and partner Alex Chaffee and grand dog Bandit of North Orland, Lillian Adel Crawford and Ella May Pearl Crawford of North Orland, grandparents Louis and May Dawn Small of Etna. Many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Let us not forget his animal family the horses, minis, steers, pigs, chickens, rabbits, dogs and cats. As you can see his love of animal and strays.

Family and friends will gather for a funeral service at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2019, at the Orland Community Center. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sam’s memory may be made to an animal shelter of choice or to Steve and Darla Crawford, who are setting up a trust for Sam’s children. Arrangements are under the care of Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home and Cremation Services Bucksport. (mitchelltweedie-young.com)

MONTREAL AND LAMOINE

Lucia Tweedie Kowaluk

July 1, 1934 – February 1, 2019

Lucia died peacefully surrounded by family and friends in a lovely Montreal nursing home close to her home. Causes were multiple as her health deteriorated sharply after a fall in October 2017. Born and raised in Albany, N.Y., Lucia spent many summers in Lamoine at the home of her grandmother, Sarah Tweedie Hodgkins, later at the home of mother, H. Louise Tweedie, and more recently at the homes of her sister Carol Tweedie Korty and cousin Catherine deTuede. Many generations of her father Fred Tweedie’s family were Lamoiners.

She earned a BA in medieval history from the University of Illinois, but after earning an MS in social work from McGill University, she remained in Montreal, devoting the rest of her life to issues of social service and reform. Initially she served as case worker for Family Services of Montreal and program director of University Settlement near McGill. She later initiated and for many years ran a drop-in and food kitchen housed in St. James United Church for homeless people. She and her husband gathered local citizens to save six city blocks of late 19th century townhouses from being razed for high-rise, high-priced condos. This radical movement garnered national recognition for its success in establishing the largest co-operative housing project on a land trust in North America known as Milton Parc, with multi-unit townhouses for 1,500 limited income people, enabling them to live in a close network of homes in the midst of the city.

She established several houses for indigent street people with mental illness. She established the Montreal Urban Ecology Centre. She worked to convert an abandoned public school building to house a multicultural arts center and many social organizations. In 2013, she was awarded the national Order of Canada, the highest such award given Canadians; in 2015, she was awarded the Order of Quebec for her services. At 82, her final effort was to save the 19th century granite structure of the historic hospital, Hotel-Dieu, from being replaced (along with four other hospitals) by two large consolidated hospitals. Using her finely tuned skills of social organization, Lucia brought together 30 organizations to work out plans for a multiuse center, including a medical clinic and more nonprofit cooperative housing.

An early marriage to Alex Kowaluk ended in divorce, although she retained his surname. She and Dimitri Roussopoulos, a social activist and publisher of Black Rose Books, were married for 50 years. Both were active in nuclear disarmament, anti-war and ecology movements. Their son Riel recently returned to Montreal after working for decades in the Vancouver area.

Lucia is survived by her husband and son; grandchildren Natasha and Orion Roussopoulos; former daughter-in-law Juliet Smith, of Vancouver; daughter-in-law Katrina Nudelman and grandchildren, Anastasia, Julia and Dimitri, of Montreal; sister Carol Tweedie Korty of Lamoine; sister Alice Tweedie of Rumford; cousin Catherine deTuede of Lamoine; aunt Cris Herrlich of Essex Junction, Vt.; cousin Katherine Herrlich of Melrose, Maine; cousin Alan Herrlich of Nashua, N.H.; cousin Robert Herrlich of Atascadero, Calif., and cousin Peter Herrlich of Klamath, Ore.

A memorial service is planned for Feb. 17 at the assembly hall in Hotel Dieu Hospital in Montreal. Ashes will be buried in Montreal and in Lamoine’s Forest Hill Cemetery.

Anthony Walter Sohns

BANGOR

Anthony Walter Sohns, also known as Tony “The Bug Man,” died of a heart attack while on a business trip in Tucson, Ariz., Feb. 6, 2019. He was 41 years old.

Sohns was raised in Bucksport, where his love of the natural world grew along the shores of Silver Lake. He began collecting at the age of 3 when everything from rocks to live bugs could be found in his pockets. His passion for collecting and cataloging grew throughout his entire life. Yearly camping trips to Baxter State Park with his family helped to cultivate this curiosity and exploration of all things wild. From every species of Maine freshwater mussel to a complete archived collection of Maine’s moths that now resides in the Smithsonian, were just a fraction of Sohns’ hand-collected and cataloged specimens.

Sohns was a storyteller. This was quickly realized with his natural ability to command a room, whether on stage or just over a pint of beer. This gift allowed him to share the passion he felt for the natural world with others, especially with children. Through the many programs he taught, Sohns is leaving behind a wake of natural history enthusiasts.

While studying entomology at Oregon State University, Sohns started Bug Mania, which he brought to Maine, and now this event dedicated to all things bug-related educates thousands of schoolchildren every year, earning him the name “The Bug Man.”

His entrepreneurial spirit was fostered by the many small shops he frequented and worked at in his youth. This sprit helped him co-found The Rock & Art shop with his family. The Rock & Art Shop started in a little orange building on the side of Route 1A and grew to three downtown locations. Through the co-owned family business, Sohns was able to put to use his incredible talent for creating displays, signs and curating natural history objects. The first downtown location was Bangor, Sohns’ beloved city, of which he was an unofficial historian, tour guide and karaoke aficionado. Few loved the city as much as he did.

Sohns was a champion of Maine at home and throughout his many travels. He was able to find fascination along any road or under any rock. From spring break trips to West Virginia to find a cryptobranchus alleganiensis (Hellbenber) with his sisters to sailing in the Caribbean, Sohns had a need for adventure that he shared with those around him.

Sohns had a respect for all living things from the giant redwoods to the tiny gnat fly. He had a way with words, whether writing an ode to a fallen tree or comforting a friend. His sense of humor was infamous and his laugh, which was distinctive, will be missed. The only thing bigger than Tony’s love of the natural world was his heart.

Sohns is survived by his mother and father, Arlene and James Sohns, his sisters, Amanda Sohns and Annette Dodd, his brother-in-law Chris Dodd, his nephew Samuel James Sohns Dodd, his many friends, and the communities he loved. He will be missed dearly.

A wake will be held at Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home in Bucksport on Friday, Feb. 15, from 4-6 p.m. and there will be a funeral service on Saturday, Feb. 16, at 10 a.m. at St. Vincent De Paul’s in Bucksport.

Jill S. Ames

TRENTON

Jill S. Ames, 74, died Wednesday evening, Feb. 6, 2019, surrounded by the love and caring of her daughters. She was born Feb. 5, 1945, in Albion, the daughter of Maurice and Beverly (Knox) Scribner.

Jill was a graduate of Besse High School, Albion; a graduate of the PLUS School of Business, Portland; and a certified project manager through Digital Equipment Corp.’s project management program. But that was only her formal education: She was a lifelong learner, taking classes in many topics from universities and adult education programs in the many places that she lived, as well as taking and teaching crafting classes, especially in quilting.

Jill spent most of her career working as an administrator, project manager and program manager in the high-technology industry in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Georgia, Illinois and California. Her most recent position prior to retirement was as a Program Manager at Sun Microsystems in Menlo Park, Calif. Since that time, she held a variety of part-time positions helping small businesses with bookkeeping and administrative tasks, as well as serving customers in a quilt shop.

In her retirement, Jill spent most of her time enjoying her family (and they her) — especially her daughters and her grandson — and passionately pursued her greatest loves, gardening and quilting. In recent years, she belonged to two chapters of the Pine Tree Quilt Guild (Island Quilters and Liberated YoYos), spent countless hours making potholders and pro bono quilt blocks and oncology quilts, teaching quilt- and bag-making techniques to her fellow quilters, attending quilt shows, designing and making beautiful quilt tops for many relatives and friends and sewing at retreats and with her daughters, who share her love of quilting. She was also a dedicated volunteer in the Master Gardener and Eat Well programs of the University of Maine Hancock County Cooperative Extension. A foe of food insecurity in Maine, she grew produce as part of the Friends in Action garden project of the Master Gardener program, and she taught clients of local food banks to use healthy produce in their meals as part of the Eat Well program. As busy as she was with those pursuits, she always found time to help her daughters with their gardens and to nurture her own gorgeous flowers and a few vegetables.

Jill was a generous, energetic, caring and fun person. She loved dogs, flowers, wildlife and beautiful landscapes. She was quick with a smile and a kind word for everyone, and she generously shared her knowledge with anyone who wanted or needed it. She was proud of and loved her daughters and her grandson more than anything and was so happy that she was able to spend all but a few years of her life living with or very close by to one or all of them. Her happiest moments were with them — helping them (or getting their help) with quilts or gardens or homework, working on quilting and gardening projects together, and just running errands or having a family dinner for no reason other than the family enjoying each other. She was (and still is) loved by her friends and family and will be well and truly missed.

Jill was predeceased by her mother, Beverly; her father, Maurice; her stepfather, Maurice Swazey; and her brother, Charles Collins. She is survived by her daughter, Andrea L. Ames and her companion, Douglas Harber, of Lamoine; daughter, Wendy L. Ames and her husband, James Neilson, of Ellsworth, and grandson, Nicholas M. Vazquez of San Jose, Calif.; ex-husband, Dale M. Ames of Ellsworth; brother Maurice (Bud) Scribner and wife, Marlene, of Clinton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jill’s daughters and grandson will celebrate her life in the Ellsworth area at a date in the spring to be announced. Laura lived most of her life in Florida, where she was a member of the Fouraker Road Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Fla. She returned to her beloved home in Orland for summers. She had many grandchildren and great-grandchildren and enjoyed watching and hearing of their escapades.

She loved life and lived it to the fullest. Dennis and Cindy would like to thank Beth Bland of Northern Light Health and the wonderful Staff at Courtland Rehabilitation and Living Center for their excellent and compassionate care of their mother during the last week of her life. They sincerely appreciate Richard E. Pinkham of Steuben, her loyal friend and faithful companion for the past few years.
