SORRENTO

William M. Wise Jr., retired insurance executive, World War II veteran and longtime resident of Sorrento, died on Jan. 7 at Seaport Village Healthcare in Ellsworth. He had celebrated his 100th birthday with four generations of family last September.

Bill Wise was born in Boston on Sept. 3, 1918, the only child of William Mason Wise and Marguerite Louise Wise. He grew up in West Newton, Mass., and attended Newton schools and Amherst College.

Bill met his future wife, Marion Richards Wise, while she was a junior at Mount Holyoke College and he was a senior at Amherst. As Marion’s obituary related just four months ago, “the attraction was instant; their romance blossomed.” They were married at Marion’s parents’ home in Toronto in August 1941. They spent part of their honeymoon in the Katahdin area and at Petit Manan — for Bill and Marion, the beginning of a 77-year life together. From the very first day to the last, theirs was a love for the ages.

Following graduation from college, Bill worked at Noyes Buick, a Boston firm that supplied cars to dealerships throughout New England. In February 1942, he joined The Travelers Insurance Co. Later that year he was commissioned an ensign in the U.S. Navy. He served in the Pacific aboard the USS Cascade as communications officer for the commander of a destroyer squadron.

After World War II, Bill rejoined The Travelers in Boston. His work selling employee benefit plans introduced him to a variety of people — corporate managers, labor union leaders, nonprofit directors and small business owners in several states, including Maine. He was a natural salesman, able to communicate easily with persons of different backgrounds. Bill retired from the company in 1976 and moved to Sorrento, where he created his own small insurance business. He took great pleasure in connecting with his customers across the state.

Bill’s affection for Maine dated from his earliest days. He spent boyhood summers fishing with his father in the Dead River region of northwestern Maine and at Medomak Camp in Washington. He climbed Mount Katahdin four times, canoed the Allagash twice, sailed Downeast coastal waters and fished trout streams and ponds across the state. For more than 50 years, Bill and Marion spent part of their summers fishing and hiking in the Katahdin area.

He and Marion bought a summer house in Sorrento in 1968. Together, they turned “Windfall” into a beautiful year-round home where they lived from 1976. Bill was legendary in Sorrento for his work in the woods — clearing blowdowns, building trails, and creating scenic vistas. His garden supplied vegetables to many friends and neighbors and his raspberry patch — whose fruit he generously shared — was the envy of all. Bill played serious tennis, a passion he passed on to family members and others in the Sorrento community. He also enjoyed golf and sailing his Ensign.

Bill is survived by his daughter Sally Wise, who lovingly cared for both Bill and Marion for six years in Sorrento, son Bill Wise and wife, Ronna Freiberg, and daughter Ellen Wise Sivon and husband, Jim Sivon; grandsons Jay Wise and wife, Maryanne Kivlehan-Wise, and Jamie Wise and Sara Bauleke; granddaughters Maggie Sivon Allen and husband, Greg Allen, and Julia Sivon Murillo and husband, Christian Murrillo; and great-grandchildren Caroline and Will Wise.

He will be buried next to Marion at Doane’s Point Cemetery in Sorrento. A memorial service for Bill and Marion will be held on Aug. 3, 2019, at the Church of the Redeemer, Sorrento. Contributions in Bill’s memory may be made to the Maine Community Foundation, 245 Main St., Ellsworth, ME 04605, www.mainecf.org.

BLUE HILL

Jack L. Grindle, 73, passed away Jan. 10, 2019, at Northern Light Blue Hill Hospital after a long struggle with vasculitis, a disease he met with grace and humor. He was born Dec. 28, 1945, in Blue Hill, the son of Basil and Nora (Staples) Grindle.

He was a graduate of George Stevens Academy, Class of 1965, and SMVTI in 1967, where he received an associate degree in building construction. Upon discharge, he returned home and began his own construction business, Jack’s Construction Co., which he operated successfully for 40 years. On July 10, 1982, he married Barbara L. Hurd. They spent countless hours trail riding their horses together. As a lover of the outdoors, he was often hunting, hiking, cutting wood and riding his tractor on the family homestead in Grindleville. His goofy sense of humor, down-to-earth sensibility and happy-go-lucky personality will be forever cherished and missed.

HANCOCK

Jeremy Daniel Kane, 38, passed away unexpectedly at home Jan. 11, 2019. He was born on Nov. 8, 1980, in Blue Hill to Robert and Lori (Rich) Kane.

Jeremy attended Hancock Grammar School, Hancock County Technical Center and graduated Ellsworth High in the year 2000. He was employed many years at Friend & Friend Motorsports, Ellsworth, as a phone receptionist.

Jeremy was a courageous young man with an infectious smile and a twinkle in his eye. He was a loving son, brother, uncle, and friend. Jeremy had a passion for life and adventure unlike any other. He loved Scouting, NASCAR racing, billiards, travel, photography, spending time with family and friends, and playing bass, a talent in which he had taught himself. In his last year of life, his most treasured time was spent in his camper at his family’s camp on Abram’s Pond. Jeremy always looked forward to hanging out at a camp with his father, Robert, and his brother, Jacob. Much to his dislike, his mother was always his biggest cheerleader.

In the words of one of his oldest and closest friends; “Strong is an understatement when talking about Jeremy Kane. He was a warrior! Boundaries were nothing because he is a “Kane” born with spina bifida. He turned nos into yeses. Jeremy did not let his disability hold him back. Told he was never going to walk or ride a bike. He and his amazing parents worked SO hard in proving the doctors wrong. He was one of the neighborhood kids racing around on bike or on foot, rolling down the hill then climbing back up. His smile! Happy, proud, naughty, tired, pissed, he had a beaming smile no matter the occasion. Jeremy found love in photography, playing the bass, traveling around, camp, drinking beers, being around family and friends. He enjoyed his life. He didn’t take things for granted. Jeremy’s can/will do attitude, gave him 38 years with us.”

Jeremy is survived by his parents, Robert and Lori (Rich) Kane of Hancock; his sister Jaclyn; his brothers, Jacob and Justin; and his loving nieces Sophia and Mersedes Kane;. his paternal uncles Reginald, David, Gary, and Ronald Kane; paternal Aunts Cheryl (Kane) Keep and Pye (Kane) Haslam and her life partner Matt McDevitt; his maternal grandmother Marion (Moon) Rich; maternal aunts Judy (Rich) and husband, Cliff Albee, and Mary (Rich) and husband, Mark Danico. He is further survived by many, many loving cousins and close friends who were all a special part of his life. Jeremy was predeceased by his maternal grandfather Philip Rich and a very special maternal great-grandmother, Nannie Moon; paternal grandparents Reginald Kane and Greta (Rankin) Kane, and paternal uncle Bruce Kane.

Jeremy leaves us with his legacy of hope, triumph and strength. We love you and will see you again down the road.

A viewing will be held 1 to 2 p.m., with a time of remembrance led by Pastor Bob Maddocks from 2 to 3 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 19, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, followed by a celebration of life at the Ellsworth Masonic Lodge from 4 to7 p.m.. Please join us in celebrating the life of Jeremy Kane.

GOULDSBORO

Nancy Gould (Hope) Stenger died Jan. 20, 2019, in Ellsworth. She has moved on to join her parents, Dr. Horace and Mamree Gould; Thelma, her stepmother, and her son Kirk. She was born Nov. 12, 1939, in Blue Hill.

Nancy lived three lives, one with each family in the 79plus years of her lifetime. Nancy met her third husband, Rocky, at her son’s Halloween party in 1979. She was the waitress from Holiday Inn; he went as the Psychedelic Cowboy. They were the only grown-ups there. They married on Aug. 16, 1981. Together they ran a farm at Chicken Mill in Gouldsboro. Her gardening skills were exceptional with at times over an acre of gardens in the fields behind the house. In the spring, Nancy would go “seed-happy,” one year with 129 tomato plants. She became known for several years as the Egg Lady of Chicken Mill with her 50plus hens. She supplied the health food store in Ellsworth with fresh eggs for three years, even through the winters. They also raised seven pigs over three seasons, even had a near shootout with a bear; he got away without a scratch. An unfixed beef critter named Russell became one of her many pets. He dressed out to over 800 pounds; she kept the hide and horns. Turkeys, ducks, raccoons and skunks made for a busy day at the farm along with two dogs with lots and lots of cats. In 1983, Nancy and Rocky went to St. Thomas for six weeks. He worked at painting an office building, she chased the sun between the banana trees in the front yard and weekends they played tourist with trips to the many beaches, bars and St. John. In the spring of 1986, she became the Video Queen of Chicken Mill Videos. The business opened with the movie “Top Gun” and 100 rental tapes. At one point the store had 5,000 tapes and several outlets in the neighboring towns. Nancy and her husband traveled throughout the state peddling tapes; even went up to East Millinocket one winter. In February of 1991, Disneyland beckoned and they drove south. After a week in the Magic Kingdom, a stop in Panama City, Atlanta then back north, a stop in South Carolina to fill the back seat with fireworks, then to New York with a ride to the top of the Trade Towers and a return to Maine. Aug. 16 was always a party at Chicken Mill when Nancy and Rocky would celebrate their wedding anniversary. During a routine eye exam in January 1997, the doctors found a tumor behind her right eye; it was wrapped around the optic nerve. The surgeons removed half of it, but her vision was never the same in that eye. She went back to work and in 1998 acquired another title, The Tanning Madam of TAN & DVD. First, with a 24-bulb bed in the upstairs of the store; then a 28-bulb bed two years later. At one point both beds were humming all day long. By this time the business had replaced the VHS rentals with a thousand DVD rentals. Progress in the form of cable, satellites and Netflix didn’t help and a lot of deadbeats who owed her money eventually closed the DVD rental business followed by an awareness of her tanners that the electric beach may not have been all that healthy. The business closed in the summer of 2013. In the years before her father’s death she went fishing with him in early June. They spent many days on Moosehead Lake, and froze all their catch. During all those years she was the master of the Chinese checker board. Summer and winter nights were spent partying and playing with the marbles that matched her blue eyes.

Nancy wrote the following a few years ago:

“My name is Nancy Gould Stenger. I am Miley’s really great grandmother on Heather’s side. Born in the last century, 11/12/39, I lived three different lives. One with each husband, one with each child, one with my future, your past. My families were my life. Cats were my passion. Mowing the yard and gardening were fun for me … There is nothing any nicer then smelling the lilacs and apple blossoms. Sweet memories will be with you always.”

She leaves behind an older brother, Robert Gould, and two children, Heidi Seavey and Ted MacGregor, their children and grandchildren; Nancy had 20 decedents in all, including her loving husband, Rocky.

Services will be held in the spring. Arrangements by Acadia Burial & Cremation Direct, 248 State St., Ellsworth. Condolences may be expressed at www.acadiacremation.com.

SURRY

Terry C. Higgins, 62, died peacefully at her home in Surry on Jan. 20, 2019. She was born Oct. 8, 1956, in Blue Hill, the daughter of Ralph Howard and Loretta (Lessard) Curtis.

Terry graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1974 and from the University of Maine in 1978. During this time, she met the love of her life and soul mate, Steven C. Higgins. They settled in Surry, and were married on June 30, 1979. This year, they were looking forward to celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary. They created many unforgettable memories together over the years, and their relationship was an exemplar of an unbreakable bond.

Terry was extremely proud of her career in health care. Immediately after graduating college, she began her career at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital (Northern Light Maine Coast) in the laboratory as a microbiologist. In June of 2018, she celebrated her 40th year as an employee at that very same laboratory. Terry had numerous professional certifications that she acquired and renewed throughout her career, and also took on additional roles in other departments such as working to lead infection control. She was one of the longest standing employees at the hospital, and will be sadly missed by her colleagues.

Terry not only grew up in Surry and lived there all of her life, but was an active community participant for many, many years. Several places within the town held a special place in her heart, such as Newbury Neck and other historical buildings that she remembered from her childhood. Terry was a board member for the Surry Historical Society, and published several newsletters about the history of the town for all to read. Throughout her entire childhood and adult life she was invested in making the town a better place.

Terry’s passions included reading, sewing, gardening and walking in the great outdoors. Terry was an avid Stephen King fan, collecting all of his novels and stories over her lifetime within her personal library. She shared her love of reading on a regular basis with those who she loved and cared about.

Terry’s largest pride and joy, as well as her greatest life accomplishment, was her loving family. Her strong marriage with Steven paved the way for a warm and fulfilling family life with her two children, Nicole and Travis. She also loved all of her grandchildren more than words can describe, and was a strong influence in each of her family members’ lives, inspiring them to become kind and generous people one small gesture at a time.

Terry is survived by her soul mate and husband, Steven Higgins of Surry; her daughter Nicole (Higgins) Chan, her husband, Victor, and their children Jordan, Jace and Jocelyn of Lamoine; her son Travis Higgins, his partner, Nichole Johnson, and their children Jackson and Johnny of Blue Hill; her stepdaughter Missy Kelley of Surry, and her child Dylan; her brother John Curtis of Surry; her sister Kim Foss, and her husband, Steve, of South Portland; and several other special cousins, relatives-in-law, nieces/nephews and treasured friends. Terry was predeceased by her father and mother, Ralph and Loretta Curtis of Surry; her Aunt Eileen (Betty) Stevens of Surry; and her sister Mary (Buffy) Curtis of Surry.

A service of remembrance will be held 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30 at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth followed by a celebration of life and burial in the spring. Condolences may be expressed at www.jordanfernald.com.

BLUE HILL

Dr. Robert Warren Sucsy, 94, of Blue Hill, died peacefully at home on Jan. 9, 2019. He was attended in his final days by Corinne Byers Sucsy, his loving wife of 30 years. He served the community of Blue Hill as both physician and friend beginning in 1975 to his retirement from medicine in 2012.

Dr. Sucsy was born to Arthur and Viola Sucsy on Feb. 21, 1924, in the city of Brooklyn, N.Y. His mother and father were the children of Hungarian and German immigrants and he and his two brothers were the first in their family to attend college. His fondest memories of his childhood were traveling on family fishing trips to Maine. The family moved to Valley Stream, Long Island, where he graduated from Valley Stream High School and was captain and quarterback of the football team. He was also an accomplished wrestler. He left Valley Stream to attend Amherst College in 1942.

His college career was interrupted by world events and he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He deployed to the Philippines as an ensign with Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron 33. His PT boat was poised for the invasion of Japan in the summer of 1945 when the war ended.

Returning from the war, Dr. Sucsy earned a medical degree from the Long Island College of Medicine in 1951. During this period he married Grace Evelyn Valentine of Valley Stream. He served as a doctor at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in 1952 and Aberdeen Proving Ground in 1953.

He moved to East Hampton, N.Y., where he practiced medicine and raised his four children from 1954 to 1975. He is fondly remembered there as a dedicated and tireless family doctor at a time when the profession made house calls.

When the last of his children left home in 1975, he pursued his lifelong ambition to move to Maine. He first lived at Peters Cove, Blue Hill, with his second wife, Judy Morris. Shortly after moving to his Billings Pond farm, he married Corinne Byers, a longtime resident of Blue Hill in 1988. For the last 30 years she had been his wife, companion, farm-hand and finally caregiver.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Arthur and Richard. He is survived by his four children, Dr. Robert James Sucsy and his wife, Debra, of Newport, R.I., Mark Conrad Sucsy and his wife, Michelle, of East Hampton, N.Y., Peter Valentine Sucsy and his wife, Eleta, of Keystone Heights, Fla., and Maral Sucsy Pugh and her husband, Daniel, of South Dartmouth, Mass.; nine grandchildren, Abigail, Robert, Kestral, Anna and Kai Sucsy, Daniel and Peter Pugh, Marielle (Sucsy) Ingram and Louisa (Pugh) Engle; and three great-grandchildren, Wyatt and Edith Engle and Morgan Ingram.

Dr. Sucsy was an avid outdoorsman and was never more at home than sitting by a fire, far from any town, and in the company of good friends. He left the woods, as this world, better than he found it.

A memorial service will be planned for a future date. Condolences may be sent to P.O. Box 701, Blue Hill, ME 04614. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Blue Hill Public Library, 5 Parker Point Road, Blue Hill, ME 04614.
