SORRENTO
William M. Wise Jr., retired insurance executive, World War II veteran and longtime resident of Sorrento, died on Jan. 7 at Seaport Village Healthcare in Ellsworth. He had celebrated his 100th birthday with four generations of family last September.
Bill Wise was born in Boston on Sept. 3, 1918, the only child of William Mason Wise and Marguerite Louise Wise. He grew up in West Newton, Mass., and attended Newton schools and Amherst College.
Bill met his future wife, Marion Richards Wise, while she was a junior at Mount Holyoke College and he was a senior at Amherst. As Marion’s obituary related just four months ago, “the attraction was instant; their romance blossomed.” They were married at Marion’s parents’ home in Toronto in August 1941. They spent part of their honeymoon in the Katahdin area and at Petit Manan — for Bill and Marion, the beginning of a 77-year life together. From the very first day to the last, theirs was a love for the ages.
Following graduation from college, Bill worked at Noyes Buick, a Boston firm that supplied cars to dealerships throughout New England. In February 1942, he joined The Travelers Insurance Co. Later that year he was commissioned an ensign in the U.S. Navy. He served in the Pacific aboard the USS Cascade as communications officer for the commander of a destroyer squadron.
After World War II, Bill rejoined The Travelers in Boston. His work selling employee benefit plans introduced him to a variety of people — corporate managers, labor union leaders, nonprofit directors and small business owners in several states, including Maine. He was a natural salesman, able to communicate easily with persons of different backgrounds. Bill retired from the company in 1976 and moved to Sorrento, where he created his own small insurance business. He took great pleasure in connecting with his customers across the state.
Bill’s affection for Maine dated from his earliest days. He spent boyhood summers fishing with his father in the Dead River region of northwestern Maine and at Medomak Camp in Washington. He climbed Mount Katahdin four times, canoed the Allagash twice, sailed Downeast coastal waters and fished trout streams and ponds across the state. For more than 50 years, Bill and Marion spent part of their summers fishing and hiking in the Katahdin area.
He and Marion bought a summer house in Sorrento in 1968. Together, they turned “Windfall” into a beautiful year-round home where they lived from 1976. Bill was legendary in Sorrento for his work in the woods — clearing blowdowns, building trails, and creating scenic vistas. His garden supplied vegetables to many friends and neighbors and his raspberry patch — whose fruit he generously shared — was the envy of all. Bill played serious tennis, a passion he passed on to family members and others in the Sorrento community. He also enjoyed golf and sailing his Ensign.
Bill is survived by his daughter Sally Wise, who lovingly cared for both Bill and Marion for six years in Sorrento, son Bill Wise and wife, Ronna Freiberg, and daughter Ellen Wise Sivon and husband, Jim Sivon; grandsons Jay Wise and wife, Maryanne Kivlehan-Wise, and Jamie Wise and Sara Bauleke; granddaughters Maggie Sivon Allen and husband, Greg Allen, and Julia Sivon Murillo and husband, Christian Murrillo; and great-grandchildren Caroline and Will Wise.
He will be buried next to Marion at Doane’s Point Cemetery in Sorrento. A memorial service for Bill and Marion will be held on Aug. 3, 2019, at the Church of the Redeemer, Sorrento. Contributions in Bill’s memory may be made to the Maine Community Foundation, 245 Main St., Ellsworth, ME 04605, www.mainecf.org.
