A Wink – Anonymous

I’d like to write the sort of things folks read and then cut out

To tuck away and read again when there’s no one else about.

I really wouldn’t care a lot for an ode on a marble tomb

But I’d love a place in the scrapbook folks keep in the sitting room.

There will be a private burial for Bill and Carol at Woodbine Cemetery in the spring.

NEW MEXICO

On Dec. 12, 2015, JoAnn Elizabeth (Sabin) McMillen left this world to begin her next great adventure. JoAnn (or Jo, as she liked to be called) was born on Aug. 25, 1931, to Mary Louise (Snyder) and Leon Sabin, and raised in Randolph, Ohio, as an only, spoiled child (her words!).

Jo attended Kent State University, graduating as a laboratory technician. Soon after, she married Ralph D. McMillen and worked as a lab tech until deciding to devote herself full-time to raising their three children. The McMillen family moved to Rockland County, N.Y., from Ohio in the mid-’60s. What a wonderful new world! In New York, Jo enjoyed the cultural diversity and artistic opportunities. She took many classes at Rockland Center for the Arts, honing her painting skills. She was part of many exhibitions at the center, and was known for her abstract land and waterscapes.

In the 1970s, Jo fulfilled her dream of living in Maine — initially part time and then, in the late ’80s, full time after Ralph retired. From her home in Sullivan, Jo continued painting, always inspired by the views from her studio of the sunsets over Taunton Bay. In 2011, Ralph and Jo left “the coast of Maine” to move to “the top of the sand pile” in New Mexico, to be closer to their children. Jo had never envisioned herself living in the desert, but she found the scenery and the artwork of the Southwest fascinating.

On Nov. 22, 2015, the day of her 64th wedding anniversary, Jo suffered a massive stroke. Three weeks later, she made the decision to see what awaited her beyond this realm, and was transferred home on hospice. The next day she died peacefully at home, surrounded by her family. Jo took her final trip to Maine with her family the following summer, where her ashes were scattered in the nooks and crannies of the shoreline outside the family home in Sullivan.

JoAnn is survived by husband Ralph (Bernalillo, N.M.), daughter Michelle (Placitas, N.M., married to Mark Belill), son Mark (Monument, Colo., married to Marisa (DeModena) and son Jon (Valley Center, Calif., married to Christina (Goodman). She also leaves behind two granddaughters, Elyse and Brooke (Guess) McMillen, daughters of Mark and Marisa.

We all miss you, Josie!

Dad attended schools in Farmington and Calais. He worked in the woods around his father’s saw mill along with his brothers until he entered the U.S. Air Force, serving in Korea during the Korean Conflict. When he returned from Korea, he married the love of his life, Eugenia (Jean) Lumbert. They were married Dec. 1, 1952, in Moose River. They moved to Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi until his discharge from the Air Force. Once they returned to the area they lived in North Ellsworth, and after a very short trucking job with Graves Trucking in Bangor he began his plumbing career. He began with Eldridge Plumbing, then with Ray Plumbing in Ellsworth, where he remained for 36 years until his retirement. He worked hard and was well respected in this field. He worked on numerous large jobs, including the rebuild of the Waterville Hospital and the rebuilds of the CMP building in Augusta and Jackson Lab, among others. He was also the Trenton plumbing inspector for approximately 45 years. But his love was always his family; he always made time for and took care of us. We could go on forever with this, so we will just say whatever we needed or whenever we needed him, he was there for us. He enjoyed being at camp “Second Lake Old Stream” hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, visiting with friends and family. Dad enjoyed traveling with mom and while they took many trips, he especially enjoyed their train trip through Canada to the West Coast across the Rockies and their trip through the Panama Canal. In retirement he also enjoyed his garden, working around the house and hobby crafts such as bird houses, planters and other such items. Dad dedicated himself to the care of mom when she was failing and it truly broke his heart when she passed almost three years ago. If he had one thing to accomplish in his life, it was to make sure his family was ok and taken care of, well dad you can rest in peace because that’s exactly what you did to the very end and we already miss that call at the end of day to say good night.

He was a member of the VFW post in Trenton and a member of the Trenton Baptist Church.

COREA AND MILBRIDGE

Thomas Allen Bridges

Nov. 9, 1942 – Nov. 29, 2018

Born in Birch Harbor but raised in Corea, “Tommy Tide,” Thomas Bridges, has passed to a place where there will be calm seas and abundant catches. He passed peacefully at his home.

As a young boy, his desire to be on the ocean started very early, as early as 6, when he went with his grandfather Grafton Dyer on a sardine boat in Dyer’s Bay seining. This would be something Tommy would do again many times in his younger years; he was even photographed and made “legendary” early on in photograph taken of him in Winter Harbor seining.

Fishing was as natural to him as breathing, passed down through Bridges genes, but it was at the tender age of 14 that Pappy suggested to him on a very cold January day that he go out fishing with his Uncle Ellis. Thinking the below freezing temperatures and the terrible sea conditions would deter him, Pappy was quite surprised when Tommy informed him he had found what he wanted to do and that was just what he did for the next 60 years. A fixture in Corea Harbor, he fished for lobsters, gillnetted, shrimped, halibut trawled and his much loved scalloping. Tommy never missed a scallop season in 52 years. Boy did he love filling those gallon bags right to the point that you couldn’t possibly put another scallop in the bag.

As any great legend would want, his fishing legacy will be carried on for many generations to come through his son and many grandchildren. Perhaps that is the greatest compliment to any man, when your family follows in the footsteps that you have already taken yourself and continues your story by both doing and telling the stories of the good old days and the man himself.

Known up and down the coast of Maine and beyond, he will be known as one of the greats of his time. A Legend. That phrase really brought out that ever infectious smile of his. Tommy was known to have gotten into a scrap or two or 10 here or there, but he always came out on the other end with a smile on his face and great story to tell.

He was always a friend to lend a hand, a fisherman to help another fisherman, a good ole fellow to have a good time. He was a very proud father, but perhaps his greatest joy was watching over his growing family of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Tom has spent the last years of his life in the companionship of Madolyn Byers. They enjoyed taking many rides all over Downeast Maine but in particular and right up until his passing to Tom’s beloved Corea Harbor to “just see what was going on.” They were usually accompanied by a four-legged friend, including Digger and most recently Lucy.

He was predeceased by his two babies, Timothy and Baby Bridges, mother and stepfather Corinne “Lassie” and Allison “Pappy” Bishop, his stepmother Ruby Bridges, brother Alton Bridges and his son-in-law John McKenzie. He is survived by his father, Chancey Bridges, his children, Brenda and John, Bryan and Pam, Barbara and Mark, Kimberlea. Grandchildren, Thomas and Chris, Jeffrey, Danielle and Jr., Ryan and Heather, Samantha and Rand, Tomi Lee and Adam, Jacob, Cassidy. Great-grandchildren: Jayden, Jenna, Christopher, Brennan, Bailey, Raegan and Eben. His siblings: Richard (Dick) Bridges and Cindy Lowe, Jeff, Sherrill, Wayne and Lorne Bridges. Nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held Sunday, Dec. 9, at 1 p.m. at the Gouldsboro Community Center. The family hopes you will come tell a story and share a memory.
