BUCKSPORT

Yvonne Tymoczko, beloved by many in her 97½ years, passed away peacefully Sept. 10, 2018, at Seaport Village Healthcare, Ellsworth. She was born in Felts Mills, N.Y., on March 3, 1921, the third child of Birdena Helen Bintz and Walter Henry Stark. Since Walter died when Yvonne was a baby, she was raised by her much loved parents Birdena (Bintz) and Edward W. Brockway, along with older siblings Stanley and Pauline Stark and Maurice and Ruth Brockway. Yvonne graduated Felts Mills High School in 1938 and Watertown (N.Y.) Business School in 1939, and began working in Watertown’s Montgomery Ward office.

Her world changed when she met Tommy (Mercerco W.) Tymoczko at a St. Patrick’s Day dance in 1939. He surprised her with a diamond on St. Patrick’s Day in 1940, with a wedding to follow on July 13, 1940.

Yvonne is survived by her daughter Sue Ann and husband, John Craig, Bucksport, her son William and wife, Deborah, Verona Island, and daughter-in-law Suzanne Tymoczko, Lewiston. She is also survived by former son-in-law George R. Baker and former daughter-in-law Cecily Kinstler Goulding, New Gloucester.

Yvonne’s life was enriched by her special grandchildren: Vicki Hilse, Newmarket, N.H., Leah Griffin, Greene, Nicholas Tymoczko (Kathy), Lewiston, Kelly Paulette, Bangor, Nick Tymoczko, Bucksport and Vincent Tymoczko, Bar Harbor. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren, six great-great grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, four step-great grandchildren and one step-great-great grandson.

Yvonne was predeceased by her parents, siblings, husband, her significant other in later years, Andy Frazier, and Leah’s husband, David Griffin. Her heart was indeed broken again when her son, Bob, passed away in May 2011. Bill and Sue Ann would like to thank all of Yvonne’s caretakers these past few years.

Yvonne was well known for being well dressed with high heels to match every outfit! She enjoyed writing and traveling in later years. She took pride in being published in Woman’s World and winning McCall magazine’s “Domestic Dilly of the Year” with her story trying to split peas for homemade split pea soup!

Since Yvonne delighted in entertaining family and friends, her last wishes included a party to celebrate her life. Family and friends are invited to John and Sue Ann Craig’s home at 112 Cross Road, Bucksport from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 30. Come and celebrate Yvonne with our traditional Ukrainian Toast “Nuz Drovy’a.”

SORRENTO

Marion Richards Wise of Sorrento died peacefully at home on Sept. 11 at the age of 98. She was born in Minneapolis, Minn., in 1919, the daughter of John Augustus Richards and Marion Hill Richards. Marion grew up in Minneapolis and in Toronto, Ontario, where her father managed Canadian operations for Retail Credit Co., now Equifax. She graduated from Havergal College, a Church of England preparatory school for girls in Toronto, and received a B.A. from Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, Mass., in 1941. Indicative of her lifelong love of education, she later received a certificate in landscape design from Radcliffe Seminars in Cambridge, Mass., and studied art history, English literature and Canadian history and culture as a graduate student at the University of Maine-Orono, as well as poetry at the College of the Atlantic.

While an undergraduate at Mount Holyoke, she met William M. Wise Jr., a senior at Amherst College. The attraction was instant; their romance blossomed. She and Bill were married at her parents’ home in Toronto in August 1941. They spent part of their honeymoon in the Katahdin area and at Petit Manan — for Marion the beginning of a deep affection for Maine, its mountains, coast and people that lasted for the rest of her life.

After their wedding, Bill and Marion settled in Cambridge, Mass. In 1943, Bill was commissioned an ensign in the U.S. Navy and soon left for the Pacific War; Marion returned to Toronto. Their son, Bill III, was born while Bill Jr. was at sea. After World War II, Bill and Marion lived in Hingham, Mass., Chatham, N.J., and again in Hingham. Two daughters, Sally and Ellen, joined the family. They all spent part of almost every summer in Maine. Bill and Marion moved full time to Sorrento in 1976 after Bill retired from the Travelers Insurance Co. in Boston.

Marion was an extraordinary mother of three children. She was also quite attuned to the changing role of women in American society. She began working in the Art Department of Wheaton College, Norton, Mass., in the mid-1960s where she also taught art history. Subsequently Marion fashioned a career lecturing on the relationship between art history and landscape design. She traveled throughout New England and as far south as Richmond, Va., giving talks to garden clubs, civic and other groups in which she presented visual comparisons of landscape paintings to actual landscapes. Many visitors to Sorrento enjoyed her beautiful gardens at “Windfall.” Marion’s interests were limitless and she pursued them with skill, grace and style.

Marion is survived by her husband, son William M. Wise III and wife, Ronna Freiberg, of Washington, D.C., daughter Sally Wise of Sorrento and daughter Ellen Sivon and husband, James Sivon, of Bethesda, Md., grandson John Wise and wife, Maryanne Wise, of Fairfax, Va., grandson James Wise and Sara Bauleke of Arlington, Va., granddaughter Marguerite Allen and husband, Greg Allen, of Brooklyn, N.Y., granddaughter Julia Murillo and husband, Christian Murillo, of Washington, D.C., and great-grandchildren Caroline and William Wise of Fairfax, Va.

Burial was at Doane’s Point Cemetery in Sorrento on Sept. 17. A memorial service will be held at the Church of the Redeemer, Sorrento, in August 2019. Contributions in Marion’s memory may be made to the Mount Holyoke College Art Museum, Lower Lake Rd., South Hadley, MA 01075.

STOCKTON SPRINGS

On Sept. 11, 2018, Patricia Ann (Hutchins) Flannery passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family at the age of 82 in a Belfast nursing facility after a valiant battle with congestive heart failure. Patricia was born May 4, 1936, in Castine. She was the daughter of Dorothy Hutchins and adopted daughter of Pearl S. Hutchins.

Patricia attended Penobscot Grammar School, where in the sixth grade she met the love of her life and future husband, Kenneth S. Flannery. They were married Nov. 19, 1955, and enjoyed 63 wonderful years together. Pat went on to attend George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill and graduated as secretary of her class in 1955. Pat was always a hard worker and held several jobs in the local area during her life. She worked for many years in the food service program in the Searsport schools and frequently commented that she greatly enjoyed and missed the camaraderie she shared with her fellow workers and being able to interact with the school kids every day.

She took great pride in her home and although she participated in many activities during her lifetime Pat most cherished her role as a loving wife, mother and homemaker. She set a great example for her children and grandchildren as to what a mother should be. This was never more evident than when, nearing the end and perhaps sensing that her time was getting short, she called for her four sons to come to her bedside, so she could see them all together one last time.

Pat enjoyed watching her children play in sporting events and later in life liked traveling to Fenway Park to watch the Red Sox in person; she did her best to never miss a Sox game on the television. She was never more content than when she could settle down for a game in the evening with her husband at her side and one of her beloved cocker spaniels, Dusty or Blackie, snuggled in her lap. Patricia and Kenneth took pleasure in many activities during their time together. A few examples of some of the pursuits they enjoyed include motorcycling trips in the United States and Canada, snowmobiling in Maine, dancing almost every Saturday night in one of the local dance halls, and going on bus trips with family and friends to Branson, Mo., and Nashville, Tenn.

Patricia is survived by her husband of 63 years, Kenneth S. Flannery, of Stockton Springs; her four sons: Kenneth P. Flannery of Searsport and his wife, Sunny; Michael Flannery of Belfast and his wife, Carol; Steven Flannery of Northport and his wife, Terri; Bradley S. Flannery of Hampden and his wife, Wendy. Pat is also survived by several cousins, 13 grandchildren, and 29 great-grandchildren, whom Pat loved very much. She also will be greatly missed by sisters-in-law, Helen Varnum of Penobscot, Donna Flannery of Ellsworth, Margot Flannery of Penobscot, Betty Tweedie of Bucksport and her husband, Brian; Hildred Emerton of Blue Hill and her husband, Linwood; brother-in-law Edward Flannery of Orland; special second-cousin Sylvia Tapley, and Sylvia’s father, Robert Tapley of Penobscot. She was predeceased by her mother, Dorothy Hutchins; grandfather, Pearl Hutchins; daughter, Joanne Trefethen; a very special uncle, Oakley Hutchins; and her cousin, Marilyn Tapley, whose relationship with Pat was so close that she always thought of Marilyn as a sister rather than a cousin.

Family and friends are invited to a graveside service that will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 7, at Hillside Cemetery in North Penobscot. The service will be immediately followed by a celebration of Patricia’s life at the Orland Community Center at 21 Schoolhouse Road in Orland. In consideration of Pat’s great love for animals, family and friends are encouraged to donate in her memory to a local animal shelter of their choice. Arrangements are under the care of Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home and Cremation Services Bucksport. (mitchelltweedie-young.com)

Robert Dalzell Sweet Jr.

ELLSWORTH

Robert Dalzell Sweet Jr., 81, died peacefully at home among family and friends on Friday, Sept. 21, 2018. He is survived by his wife of nearly 39 years, Margie (Mary V. Frear), and four children, Perci (wife of Jim Fungaroli), Amy (wife of Mike Petrus), Rob (Robert Dalzell Sweet III, husband to Stacie Waltz) and Stephen Edward Sweet (husband to Bailey Grandy), nine grandchildren, Conor and Cole Fungaroli, Matthew Petrus, Jessica, (wife of Jesse Hoffman), Bradley, Nicholas and Eric Sweet, and Margaret and Robert Sweet, one great-grandchild, Janae Petrus, and a sister, Ann Sweet Dupar (wife of Kenneth Dupar). He was preceded in death by one brother, Thomas Grebe Sweet.

Since retiring to Maine in 2008, Bob has been an active member of Church of Our Father Episcopal Church in Hulls Cove, and also the singing group, Gospel Gents.

Bob was born on May 27, 1937, in Midland, Mich. At the young age of 15, he was stricken with polio just months before the Salk vaccine became available. Refusing the usual treatment of placement in an iron lung and transferring him instead to Sister Kenny Hospital in Los Angeles, his father made it possible for Bob to regain his strength to walk again, finish his education at College (now University) of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif., and go on to become a successful businessman. In 1973, after working several positions with Dow Chemical and then Westinghouse Corp., Bob started his own business, Creative Pultrusions, in Bedford, Pa., to fulfill an order with General Motors Corp for fiberglass dunnage bars. He used his own truck, materials he assembled and seven young high school employees, four of whom remain with the company today. From that small beginning in a garage, the company grew over the years until it employed 250 people and was a multimillion-dollar business at the time Bob retired.

Bob was always very involved in his community, sharing generously both with profits as well as his time as board member or leader of many organizations (hospital, school, airport authority, United Way, church, Rotary, community foundations). He even created his own Foundation to give away grants to local church groups and scholarships to young students to further their education. Because he felt a need to tell others the story of his fight and survival over Polio, Bob made himself available as speaker to many Rotary Clubs to raise money for their effort to eradicate the disease around the world.

He was honored with many fine recognitions, most notably as local Man of the Year for Elks, Citizen of the Year for Rotary, an Alumni Distinguished Professional Service Award from his alma mater, University of the Pacific, and then, within his own industry, he was inducted into the national Composites Institute Hall of Fame as well as named the global Pultruder of the Year at an international Pultrusion Industry conference.

Bob and his wife, Margie, loved to sail and in 1993, they launched their beautiful 43-foot Hinckley sailboat, Spirit Wind, which began a series of adventures at sea, both here in the waters along the coast of Maine and then, off shore to Bermuda, the Virgin Islands and the whole Caribbean Island chain. In 2008, when the company Bob created was sold to a British firm, it seemed only natural to bring Spirit Wind home to Maine, where she remains today under new ownership. It was here then that the struggle to overcome polio resumed and Bob slowly began to lose his mobility, but never his spirit. And now, that spirit and Bob are finally free to join many loved ones who’ve gone before him to be with Jesus. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Sail on, beloved, under the wings of your mighty Creator.

Funeral and celebration memorial will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2018, at Church of Our Father Episcopal Church in Hulls Cove. A memorial service is planned for Bedford, Pa., in October. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Church of Our Father, P.O. Box 186, Hulls Cove, ME 04644 or Imago Dei Anglican Church, 56 Center St., Bangor.

Arrangements in care of Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth. Condolences may be expressed at www.jordanfernald.com.

TRENTON

September 19, 2018 – Our dad, George E. Bursey of Trenton, went home to be with the Lord. George was born in Cambridge, Mass., on Jan. 1, 1927, the son of Herbert and Annie Bursey. At 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was trained as an Airedale. Upon finishing his service with the Navy, Dad embarked on a career in aircraft maintenance at Hanscom Air Force Base in Massachusetts. As a civilian employee of the U.S. Air Force, Dad became a supervisor at an early age and eventually ran the jet engine overhaul and test facility at Hanscom. In the latter years of his career, he helped to oversee government contractors working on projects for the Air Force. In addition to working full time at the base, for many years he had a side business that took up many nights and weekends.

In 1982, George retired from his career at the base and moved to Trenton with his beloved wife, Gloria, and their two youngest children. He took great pleasure in landscaping and maintaining their retirement property. He had always loved the water, so being near the ocean in Maine was a special treat for Dad. While retired, Dad and Mom also traveled a lot in their RV. They found a home away from home in Titusville, Fla., where they spent over 25 winters and developed lifelong friendships.

Dad was a tireless worker, even in retirement. He always had a project to work on, and he even went back to work for a while helping a friend who was a carpenter. He also served as a volunteer firefighter for a number of years. As his children, we all benefited from the lessons of hard work taught by Dad.

Dad did love his home and his projects, but he had a special love for his wife Gloria. They were rarely seen apart. She died in 2014, and he missed her greatly. We are going to miss them both so very much. Dad also loved his children and grandchildren.  When asked how he wanted to be remembered, he wrote: “That I loved my wife Gloria dearly, and that our children and grandchildren meant more to me than I could wish for. God bless them all.”

Dad was predeceased by his wife, his son George Bursey, his daughter Linda Bursey, grandson Ryan Parsons, and all of his siblings. Dad is survived five children: Robin Parsons and her husband, Kenny; Scott Bursey and his wife, Terri; Debbie Jones; Michael Bursey and his wife, Shelly; and Mark Bursey and his wife, Kimberly. George is also survived by granddaughters Shauna Parsons, Caitlin Parsons, Madelyn Bursey, Emma Bursey, Keri Lavoie, Kristen Pierce, Melissa Oliveira, Dale Horsman and Christine Webb, as well as grandsons George Bursey Jr., Michael Bursey, Alex Bursey and Evan Bursey. George is survived by several great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind longtime, cherished friends.

A graveside service will be held in the spring. We love you Dad, and we miss you.

SOUTHWEST HARBOR

        James R. Carroll

February 5, 1939 – September 30, 2018

James R. Carroll passed away at his home in Southwest Harbor on Sept. 30, 2018. Jim was born in Bar Harbor on Feb. 5, 1939, to Richard T. and Mary (Harriman) Carroll of Southwest Harbor. While growing up on MDI, our Dad gleaned great pleasure in hunting, fishing, playing ball, exploring and spending time at the family camp on Rum Island.

He graduated from Pemetic High School in 1957 and then from Maine Central Institute in 1958 as a postgraduate. Jim proudly served his country for three years in the United States Army as a member of the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, N.C. He was a lifetime member of the Eugene M. Norwood American Legion Post 69 and of the 82nd Airborne Division Association. He attended college at both the University of Arizona and then Washington State Teachers College in Machias, where he met and married his wife, Maxine Savage, and her two daughters Wendy Jo and Wanda Sue.

Jim began his law enforcement career with the Maine Warden Service in 1964 and was assigned patrol duties in the Clayton Lake District of Maine’s North Woods. In 1967, he took a coastal warden position with the Department of Sea and Shore Fisheries and enjoyed a rewarding career with Maine’s Marine Patrol, retiring in 1988 as a division lieutenant. Maxine and Jim’s career with Marine Patrol moved them to various places along Maine’s coast including Harrington, Freeport, Corea, Gouldsboro, Prospect Harbor and eventually back to his hometown of Southwest Harbor. During that journey, they added two sons, John Wesley and Jay Richard, and a third daughter, Jennifer Lynn, to the family. Upon entering retirement from law enforcement, Jim soon embarked on a second career driving a truck for Doug Gott and Sons construction company, where he worked for nearly 25 years and made many friends.

Jim Carroll’s life was infinitely blessed and he understood and appreciated those blessings throughout his life and at the end. The stories told at hunting camp or during Friday afternoon “tea” in Maxine’s kitchen were made special by those who shared, listened and joined the debate. Friendships undoubtedly enriched Big Jim’s life and none more than those enjoyed with his brother Johnny Carroll, sister Marilyn LaHaye, cousin David Carroll, Wayne Smith, Harold Billings, Bunny Parady, Red LaHaye, Doug Gott, Colby Young, Walter Moore, Charlie Davis, Gib Dow, Merle Cousins, Bob Burns, Cinder, Hannah, Ralph, Thor, Bill, Jessie, Niall, Sami, and most of all, Maxine.

As we reflect on our Dad’s life, we will surely fail to capture all that he meant to us, but his passions have always been apparent. Jim loved sea duck hunting with cousin David, going to hunting camp at Slide Bank with the boys, Model 12 Winchesters, Carroll family reunions, Model 70 Winchesters, his dogs, chainsaws, snowmobiles, Western movies, WWII documentaries, being Airborne and not a “leg,” Waylon Jennings, hitting 40 hours and going on overtime, his grandkids, Varney GMC, C.M. Russell paintings, Louis L’amour books, Pemetic’s Gold Basketball in 1957 and then winning the New England Prep School Championship in 1958 with MCI, MDI’s Gold Ball in 2017, his children, and of course and most of all, Maxine and her cooking.

Anyone who knew Jim Carroll heard him say, more than once, that the two best decisions he ever made in life were, marrying our mother and becoming a coastal warden. We affirm that declaration and additionally contend that one of life’s greatest gifts to us was having him for our Dad.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Joan and Marilyn, in-laws George and Edna Savage and many dear aunts, uncles and cousins. He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and brother John; as well as Sami, Niall and many special nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jim’s memory can be made to: Marine Patrol Benevolent Association 22 Coaling Station Lane, Lamoine, ME 04605.

A casual celebration of Jim’s life will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 7, at the Kebo Valley Golf Club, 136 Eagle Lake Road in Bar Harbor, where light refreshments and stories can be shared.

FALMOUTH

          David F. Pollard

             1919 – 2018

David Frank Pollard, age 99, of Falmouth, formerly of Millinocket, Bucksport and Orland, passed away on Sept. 25, 2018, with family at his side, after having lived a full life.

David was born on Jan. 3, 1919, and raised in Lynn, Mass., the son of Stanley I. and Anna (Berko) Pollard. He attended Lynn English High School, where he was an accomplished student, athlete and Boy Scout. He matriculated to Tufts University, graduating magna cum laude, Class of 1940, with a major in chemical engineering. At Tufts, Dave was recognized for his academic accomplishments as a member of the Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society; he was captain of the track team and held longstanding school records in shot put and javelin. He was named “Most Typical Tufts Man” and the Jackson College co-eds voted him “Most Liked by Jackson Women.” During summers, Dave was a camper and waterfront counselor at William Lawrence Camp in Center Tuftonboro, N.H.

Upon graduation from Tufts, Dave served his country stateside, as an employee of the DuPont Chemical Co. His responsibilities took him to Oak Ridge, Tenn., Chicago, Salt Lake City and other sites in the country for duties that were never fully disclosed or discussed with his family. After WWII, Dave traveled throughout the Western U.S., enjoying life as a single man, exploring the great outdoors and practicing photography. He eventually returned to New England and settled in Millinocket, where he worked for Great Northern Paper Co. During his years in Millinocket, he explored Mount Katahdin (in all seasons) and acquired a deep love of the Maine wilderness. Dave briefly left GNP to work as a counselor and canoeing instructor at Camp O-At-Ka on Sebago Lake. While at O-At-Ka, Dave led a canoe trip for the “sister” Camp Fleur de Lis. It was on this trip that he met his future wife, Betty Ann Traynor. Although Betty was engaged to another man, he won her heart and they were married on Patriot’s Day, April 19, 1952.

Dave returned with Betty to Millinocket, where he resumed his responsibilities as chief engineer for GNP and where his five children would be born. It was in Millinocket where the family formed lifelong friendships and solidified their love of the state of Maine. The family moved to Bucksport a year after the birth of their fifth child, where he became resident mill manager at St. Regis Paper Co. They traded their Ambajejus Lake camp for a wooden-hulled sailboat, Prowler, the first of three boats on which he and Betty enjoyed years of sailing the coast of Maine and beyond.

His professional accomplishments were many and his dedication to his community culminated with the Ray H. Cross Community Service award from the Paper Industry Management Association (PIMA) in 1976. He was especially proud of his relationship with the mill’s workers, for whom there was deep and mutual respect.

Dave and Betty retired at their riverfront property in Orland, which became homeport for many gatherings and visits from grandchildren. Dave and Betty took several winter excursions from Maine, on their boats Penobscot and Canopus via the Intracoastal Waterway to Florida and the Bahamas. By mid-spring, they would travel north to Maine, where they would spend summers. It was around this time that Dave was inducted into the Cruising Club of America, an organization of sailors who have voyaged the oceans for adventure and recreation.

Dave was first a family man. His children remember his bedtime stories about Brownie, Painted Feather and Birdcall and his joyous rendition of the German poem “Lorelei”; stories of his experiences as a member of the Washington Senators baseball team (all untrue) and especially saying grace at every family meal. Dave was an ardent fan of the Boston Red Sox and he finally witnessed the Sox winning the World Series in 2004, 2007 and 2013. His BOSOX cap often spurred conversations with strangers and won him an occasional free offering.

Dave was predeceased by his parents, his brothers, Richard and Stanley, his sister, Mary and his beloved wife, Betty. He leaves his five children and their spouses, Stephen Eugene Pollard (Darlene), David Bain Pollard (Rita), Sarah Appleton Pollard Cowan (Tim), Mary, aka Polly, Chadwick Sewall (Arthur) and Samuel White Pollard (Jane) and his beloved grandchildren, in order of age, Becky, Tom, Abby, Jeremy, Cara, Seth, Emma, Helen, Dale, Anthony, Sally, Will and Morgan and great-grandchildren, Madison, Cillian, Lauren, Pearse, Sophie, Benny, Marin and baby Andrew. They all come from “good stock” and there “isn’t a clunkah in the bunch.”

The family would like to thank the compassionate care provided to Dave by the many staff at Falmouth House at Oceanview as he aged in place and the comforting team from Compassus Hospice.

Friends and family are invited to share their memories and offer their condolences by visiting David’s online guestbook at www.jonesrichandbarnes.com.

A celebration of Dave’s life will be held on Monday, Oct. 8, 2018, at 11 a.m. at the Elm Street Congregational Church in Bucksport. In lieu of flowers, gifts in Dave’s memory may be made in honor of Dennen Week at Camp O-At-Ka, a special program that allows deserving boys the chance to experience the benefits of camp life. Memorial gifts may be sent to Camp O-At-Ka, 593 Sebago Road, Sebago, ME 04029. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Jones, Rich & Barnes Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland, ME 04103. 775-3763.
