WINTER HARBOR

Larry E. Smith Sr.

Larry walked through the garden into the arms of Jesus, Sept. 3, 2018, while residing almost two years with care from Narraguagus Bay Healthcare Facility. Larry was born Aug. 31, 1939, in West Bay, the son of Esther and Woodrow Smith; they had a brief marriage. Esther remarried to Walter Coombs and Larry was raised in Winter Harbor.

Larry attended and anxiously left Sumner High School to pursue a career in construction with Alvin Whitten. Larry loaded dump trucks by hand, did mechanic work, welding, truck driving until finding his comfort and niche in the seat of a bulldozer.

Larry had another dream: to marry and raise a family. His eyes and attention focused on Ann Workman. He convinced her to toss aside her plans as a hairdresser to marry him, and she did on July 18, 1959. Together they raised a family and took in anyone who needed a meal, to an extended place to stay. Too many to count were blessed by their hospitality and generosity.

Larry had another dream of lobster fishing. He came home one day in 1967 and announced his plan. He bought a boat and for 40 years enjoyed catching lobster, dragging for fish, shrimp, scallops, quahogs, making his own dragging gear, repairing, selling and helping finish off boats in his garage.

In the latter years, Larry and Ann enjoyed wintering with family and friends in Lakeland, Fla., and building their retirement lakeside retreat on Graham Lake. Alzheimer’s disease started chipping away at Larry, forcing this dream to end.

Soon after their lakeside home was sold, Ann unexpectedly passed on March 30, 2014.

Larry was predeceased by his mother, Esther Coombs, and stepfather Walter Coombs; father, Woodrow Smith, and stepmother Mary Smith; great-grandson, Seth Tracey; and son-in-law, John Andress. Larry is survived by daughters, Lori Andress of Bay Minette, Ala., Lisa Tracey of Gouldsboro, Melaney Lundy of Theodoere, Ala.; son, Larry E. Smith Jr. and wife, Karen, of Winter Harbor; grandchildren, Kristy Tracey and husband, Troy, Lori Rainer and husband, Billy, Josh Timmons and wife, Nancy, Andrew Smith and wife, Ashley, Mark Smith and wife, Cheyenne, Lee Smith and fiancée Michaela, Ashley and husband, Josh, Brandon and wife, Kasey, Kayla Johnson and fiancé Raymond, and Kyle Depew; great-grandchildren, Tristan, Brooke, Adam, Caroline, Finn, Clara, Connor, Annabelle, Collin, Kowen, Isaac, Madison, Jason, Cora, Malachi, Kenzie, and Masyn; sisters, Barbara Attmeter and husband, Jim of Bradenton, Fla., Cathy Witham and husband, Arthur, of Sebring, Fla.; brothers, Guy Coombs and wife Gail of Sullivan, and Billy Coombs and wife, Narda of Clifton.

A service of remembrance will be announced.

Arrangements by Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth. Condolences may be expressed at www.jordanfernald.com.

OAKFIELD

Cynthia Diann Bauersfeld left this world Aug. 22 at the age of 83 following a life filled with dear friends, loving family and countless experiences. Diann was born in 1935 to Harry and Thelma Jones in Harrisburg, Pa. Eventually the Joneses settled in the farm land of Catawissa, Pa., where Diann attended the local schools, participated in church activities and became familiar with raising chickens and the egg laying business. Following high school, Diann enrolled in nearby Bloomsburg State College, where she obtained her degree in special education and later on taught in Hershey, Pa. While teaching in Hershey, Diann met her husband to be, the late Dr. John C.W. Bauersfeld, a veterinarian. In time, John and Diann landed in the suburbs of Philadelphia and began raising their family of three boys, Kurt, Kevin and Kristopher.

John introduced Diann to the beautiful Maine coast via summer vacations to Friendship. Ultimately the couple purchased land and relocated to Ellsworth in 1973. Mountain View Veterinary Hospital, located in Trenton, is where John practiced with Diann at his side for more than 25 years. Needless to say that oftentimes the discussions around the supper table were colorful concerning the day’s events and their animal patients.

Diann was a member of the First Congregational Church of Ellsworth. As a member she served on many committees and was an active participant in countless church functions in addition to being a member of the choir for many years. She took to the stage occasionally lending her beautiful soprano voice as a cast member of several community theater Gilbert and Sullivan productions. Diann and John square danced for several years in the Ellsworth area, sewing her own square dance dresses from time to time. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, and crocheting. She could play the piano, bridge, most board games and Rummy 500. Her day usually began with completing the Bangor Daily News crossword puzzle.

Diann was an attentive mother and supported her children in their various endeavors. A loud ringing cowbell would clearly indicate where she was located along the sidelines of her boy’s soccer games. She swatted many mosquitoes watching Little League baseball games and attended her boys’ graduation ceremonies from high school and college. She was always there for her boys.

Following John’s death in 2001, Diann returned to school as a substitute teacher in the Ellsworth area. Having a last name that was difficult for young school-aged children to pronounce required Diann to make a transformation to the woman known as Mrs. B! Mrs. B enjoyed being with the students very much, and they loved her in return. Oftentimes she recalled hearing “Mrs. B! Mrs. B!” while out shopping coming from one of “her” students.

Diann had the good fortune to travel with John out West to Yellowstone National Park, Yosemite and through the magnificent Redwood trees of California. She saw a bullfight in Tiajuana, Mexico, toured the Parthenon in Greece and took in the sights and sounds of Italy. Vacationing with her son Kris and his family afforded her the opportunity to visit Florida, Las Vegas and Disney World, to name a few. When she took a vacation to visit Kevin, she was able to see the world famous Biltmore Estate in Asheville, N.C. No matter what, Diann was up for new adventures.

Failing health required Diann to leave her lovely home by the pond in Ellsworth and settle in with Kurt and Shelli in Oakfield, on the shore of Spaulding Lake. Lake life was a good fit for Mrs. B, as she made new friends and was welcomed to the “neighborhood.” Diann, aka Mrs. B., will be missed not because she died, but because she lived.

Diann is survived by her brother Charles Jones and wife, Nadine, of Port Matilda, Pa.

Three sons, Kurt Bauersfeld and wife Shelli of Oakfield, Kevin Bauersfeld and wife, Karen, of Greensboro, N.C., and Kris Bauersfeld and wife, Sydney, of Naples.

Seven grandchildren: Ian, Tyler, Kody, Korey, Zachary, Billy and Lindsay and two great-grandchildren: Avery and Waylon.

A service will be held at the First Congregational Church in Ellsworth on Sept. 22 at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow.

BANGOR AND HANCOCK

Clarence R. Snyder Jr. &

Patricia J. Snyder

A love story … Clarence and Pat Snyder were married for nearly 70 years and passed within hours of one another at the Veterans Home in Bangor.

Patricia J. Snyder was born in Caribou in 1930, daughter of Levi and Vera (Watson) Russell. She passed away on Sept. 14, 2018.

Clarence R. Snyder Jr. was born in Bangor in 1927, son of Clarence R. Snyder Sr. and Helen (Montgomery) Snyder. He passed away on Sept. 15, 2018.

Pat worked many years in the Bangor school system (keeping an eye on her children) and retired from Bangor Mental Health. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends as well as being an avid reader.

Clarence left Bangor High School to join the Navy, serving in the Seabees in the Pacific during WWII, returning to graduate like many veterans and finding his bride. He worked many years in the Bangor school system, beginning by shoveling coal into the boilers that served the old high school and library. His responsibilities grew to lead the maintenance activities of the school system, and he was one of the first to receive state master licenses for electrical, plumbing and oil burner. He was the clerk of works for what is today the Eastern Maine Community College, becoming the first maintenance superintendent, from where he retired. In addition to his numerous positions, he was known to assist family and friends with home improvement projects as well as finding time to build four homes and one summer home for his family. In his retirement, he ran the Swan’s Island Lobsterman’s Co-op. Clarence enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting and fishing.

Pat and Clarence lived most of their lives in Bangor, and more recently in Hancock. They also enjoyed being snowbirds in Dunedin, Fla., for 12 years during their retirement, where they enjoyed making many new friends, various activities and the warmer weather.

They are survived by their children: Clarence III and his wife, Jane, of Brookfield, Mass.; Ronald and his wife, Katherine, of Dedham; Lewis and his wife, Debra, of Palmyra, Pa.; Beth Smart and her husband, Tim, of Ellsworth; and Jeffery of Hancock and 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. They were preceded in death by a son, Robert. Pat is also survived by sisters: Paula Dwelley; Susan Laffey and her husband, Richard; Peggy Hewes and her husband, Louie, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, George, and a sister, Jacqueline.

They were most proud of the accomplishments of their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren … Jeff and his work at Jackson Lab; Beth and her work at Cancer Care; and to be one of the only three families to have graduated three sons from Maine Maritime Academy.

There will be a private graveside service at the convenience of the family. Relatives and friends are invited to a time of remembrance from noon to 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 29, 2018, at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor.
