LAMOINE/LARGO, FLA.

Alison Marie Moon was born on March 18, 1982, and graced the world with a beautiful presence until she passed away on Aug. 14, 2017.

Those who knew Alison remember the blond-haired child, always twirling her hair and carrying her special white blanket. They remember the cheerleader with the brightest smile. They remember the woman who always chose her own path in life, who spread her wings to make a home in Florida while always holding true to her Maine roots.

With a smile that seldom left her face, Alison was the first one to lend a hand or offer a kind word. Alison’s life was full of a complete and true happiness that reflected in every person fortunate enough to cross her path.

Alison was a natural caretaker and she took great pride in nurturing her clients. As a licensed nail-tech and esthetician, continuing education and self-improvement were a priority. She had many accomplishments in life, but she was most proud of her successful, ever-growing business in the beauty industry.

Alison is survived by her parents, Leonard Moon and Jamie Compton. Her love for them was so evident in the special relationships they shared. She also leaves behind her fiancé Rick Ruggiero, a man who made her shine in a way that only true love can.

The love of a family is one of life’s greatest blessings and Alison’s family was indeed one of hers. On the maternal side, she leaves behind grandparents Jim and Cookie Patten, uncles and aunts, James “Putt” and Pamela Patten, John and Barbara Patten and Joe Patten and their children. On the paternal side, she leaves behind uncles and aunts Lee and Jane Moon, Elliott and Beth Moon, Mike and Val Griffin, Alvin and Lauren Hall and their children. Godparents Nick and Marie Pierson also survive Alison. She was preceded in death by paternal grandparents Barbara and Leslie Moon.

Friendships make life more beautiful and with such an incredible personality and caring nature, Alison had many, but held closest to her heart dear friends Melissa Chakirelis and Briana Garrity. The family and friends who will miss Alison is too long to list.

Her celebration of life was held on Aug. 19, 2017, at The Acadia Event Center in Trenton. Those who wish to make contributions in Alison’s name may do so to the SPCA of Hancock County, 141 Bar Harbor Road, Trenton, ME 04605.

Arrangements by Acadia Burial & Cremation Direct, 248 State St., Ellsworth.

BANGOR

Alston Alley Beal Jr. died at EMMC after fighting a valiant battle against multiple myeloma and kidney failure. He was born in Southwest Harbor to his parents, Alston A. Beal Sr. and mother Frances Fernald Beal.

Al (junior) graduated from Pemetic High School in 1953. Later that year, he became a proud Marine. He spent his three years as a Marine RECON. He loved the Marines, always wearing a Marine hat, and driving on a Recon 53 license plate until the day he passed. Al married his wife, Patricia Johnson of Tremont, in 1956. They began their marriage by moving to Hartford, Conn., where he worked for Pratt and Whitney Aircraft for four years. He moved back to Ellsworth and worked at L.S Thorsen for 28 years as a tool and die maker. At the age of 53, after Thorsen’s closed, Al started college at UMO for a degree in horticulture and landscape management. After graduation, he started his own landscaping business and worked for the Smithgall family estate for 28 very happy years. He had a family of four children, and with wife Pat they enjoyed taking the Pat-C-Lynn (lobster boat) on many weekends to camp on the offshore islands of MDI. He retired at the age of 81 only because of illness; he loved his work. He and Pat then made Sun City Center, Fla., their permanent home. They enjoyed traveling, cruises, and of course he loved his poker. He was an avid reader, and probably read every James Patterson book ever published.

Al was predeceased by his daughter Linda at her early age of 19, his mother, Frances, and his grandparents, Dana and Margaret Fernald, whom he lived many years with while growing up. Al and Pat were married for 61 years. EAST BLUE HILL

Robert, “Bob,” Charles Marville, age 88, passed away peacefully Aug. 22, 2017, at home in East Blue Hill, surrounded by family.

Born in 1928 in Germany, Bob and his family immigrated to the United States in 1940 as war refugees. He lived in Kennett Square, Pa., and shortly thereafter moved to New York, where he resided until retiring to the coast of Maine in 1984.

Bob began his working life in the King’s Kitchen Bakery at age 12 but also managed to graduate from high school at 15. Bob attended night school at New York University to complete his undergraduate degree in business while working full time as a salesman for the Johns Manville Corp. While working for Johns Manville, Bob and his wife, Jan, moving from Long Island to Pocantico Hills, N.Y., where Bob served on the Board of Deacons along with David Rockefeller. Impressed by Bob’s leadership, Mr. Rockefeller offered him an opportunity to work for one of the Rockefeller companies. Bob chose Rockefeller Center, where he spent the rest of his professional career. After joining Rockefeller Center in 1955, he rose through the ranks to become vice president of operations, executive vice president and finally acting president until his retirement at age 56. As Bob said, “I got an early start working and it was time for the next chapter in my life.”

Bob was fully engaged in his community of Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., and served on numerous boards and committees, including the Village Planning Board and Board of Deacons at the Congregational Church. His love of community continued in retirement. From conceiving and building, Thirty Love, an indoor tennis facility, to his vision that led to the creation of Parker Ridge, a model retirement community in Blue Hill. Bob’s passion for community and philanthropy guided his life on the Peninsula. Other contributions include: fostering development of the Friendship Cottage, a day program for individuals with Alzheimer’s; donating the new home for the Bagaduce Music Lending Library; and supporting local schools, including the Harbor School, Bay School, George Stevens Academy and The Liberty School. He was especially pleased to have established college scholarship funds for local students. In addition, he helped create a firm foundation for the Tree of Life and Turn-Style and served on numerous local boards including the Blue Hill Memorial Hospital, The Grand, Bagaduce Lending Library, Collins Center for the Performing Arts, Bar Harbor Bank and Trust and HydroPhoton.

Bob met the love of his life, Jan, while working at Johns Manville Corp. He knew she was “the one” right away and they were happily married for 67 years. Together, they raised two daughters, Nancy and Lee, while living in Westchester County, New York. Early in his career, Bob was captivated by the beauty of Maine while fulfilling his job of locating the annual Christmas tree for Rockefeller Center. At that time, Bob and Jan brought their young family to Maine for summer vacations with one day set aside to select the “perfect” tree with the help of local forest rangers. Their love of Maine now firmly established, they found their “heaven on Earth” on Blue Hill Bay in the town of East Blue Hill. Here, they built their dream home, “Loons Landing,” together and resided there full time for almost 40 years.

Soon after settling in Maine, Bob began a second career as an accomplished wood carver. His birds and “feather pins” were sold at local shops with proceeds supporting college scholarships for local students. Bob’s love of people, his generosity and sense of humor earned lifelong friendships. He was a dedicated mentor, offering thoughtful advice and support to many. He was known for his spontaneity, quick wit, kindness and his passion for helping others achieve their dreams.

His life was centered on family and he enjoyed many shared interests with Jan including tennis, canoeing, gardening, music and reading, she with her novels and he with the New York Times. Together, they were avid supporters of the arts and generous hosts at Loons Landing. He was the family tour guide leading outings in his sporty convertible and raconteur at the dinner table with a funny story for every occasion.

Bob was predeceased by his parents, Paul and Dora Marville, and his sister, Helga Roth.

He is survived by his beloved wife and best friend, Jan; his daughters, Lee Marville and Nancy Miller and husband, David; grandchildren, Lindsey Erin Miller and Jennifer Megan Bonneau and husband, Ron; great-grandson, Trystan Robert Bonneau. His family is especially grateful to caregivers, Merle Bisberg, Greta Hooper and Quint Bixby and to Scott Heney for his many years of help.

A service celebrating Bob’s life will be held at the Blue Hill Congregational Church on Sunday, Aug. 27, at 1 p.m. A reception with family will follow, details to be provided at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to one or more of the following organizations:

  • Bob Marville College Scholarship Fund.
  • The Bagaduce Music Lending Library.

  • Blue Hill Schools — Bay, GSA, Harbor.

SURRY

Robert Francis Hodgkins Jr., 71, died Aug. 22, 2017, at the Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth with his daughter Kinnane at his bedside. Bob was born July 20, 1946, in Weymouth, Mass.

Bob graduated from Bar Harbor High School in 1965 and, following graduation, joined the Army. He was stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, attached to the 173rd, 101st 82nd Airborne Division. He did two tours of duty in Vietnam. Bob made several combat jumps into Vietnam, most notably during the Tet Offensive. Bob received an honorable discharge and pursued a career in law enforcement. He trained at the Police Academy in Maine and was employed with the Bar Harbor Police Department. A transition to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department in the role of detective was the next step in Bob’s career. In the line of duty for the Sheriff’s Department, Bob sustained a back injury that left him 100 percent disabled for the rest of his life, cutting short what would have been a wonderful career in law enforcement. Bob also suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and was 100 percent disabled through the Veterans Administration. Thus, Bob’s life was not easy due to these two significant factors.

Bob was loved by all who knew him for his larger than life presence, his sense of humor and for his unrelenting selflessness and generosity. Bob was devoted to his two daughters, Kinnane and Bobbi, and always wanted the very best for them. Bob was the happiest when he was on his beloved Frenchman Bay. The love affair really started when he was the tour guide on the Frenchman Bay Sightseeing Boat in the 1960s. He loved talking on the loudspeaker, pointing out the geographical wonders of MDI. As an adult he spent many hours fishing for mackerel and cod, cruising around Penobscot Bay in his various boats.

His death has left his family and friends in deep sorrow. He will be dearly missed and remembered with great fondness. We will all remember the light in his eyes and the joy he expressed when seeing each of us.

Bob is survived by his two daughters, Kinnane Hodgkins of Surry and her two daughters, Nevaeh and Serenity, and Bobbi Hodgkins of New Bedford, Mass.; four sisters, Luere Hodgkins Glover of Bar Harbor and her children, Peter York of Napierville, Ill., James York of Hattiesburg, Miss., and Sara York of Hoffman Estates, Ill.; Mary Hodgkins Banfield of Bangor and her children, Kimberly Devanney of Chester, N.H., and Christopher Carter of Durham, Maine; Katherine Hodgkins McMullen of Fairhaven, Mass., and her children, Jessica Pierce of Chester, N.H., Rachel McMullen of Fairhaven, Mass., and Stanley McMullen of Martha’s Vineyard, Mass.; and Rebecca Hodgkins Jordan of Phenix, Ala., and her children, Dana Haynes of Trenton and Richard Haynes of North Carolina, and all his sisters’ families. Bob also is survived by his sister Deanie’s children, Greg Linscott of Mount Desert Island, Jeff Linscott of St. Agatha, and Susan Linscott of Brewer. Bob was predeceased by his parents, Robert F. and Fredonna Hodgkins of Bar Harbor, and his friend and sister, Geraldine (Deanie) Hodgkins Linscott. Bob also was predeceased by his former wife and mother of his daughters, Mary (Buffy) Curtis Hodgkins.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1, at East Lamoine Cemetery, 363 Lamoine Beach Road, Lamoine. A reception at Lamoine Beach State Park will be held immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the VFW Post No. 109, P.O. Box 281, Ellsworth, ME 04605.

HARRINGTON

Dorothy (Dottie) Wester Plummer passed away on Aug. 22, 2017. She was born on the Hagen farmstead west of Horace, N.D., on April 22, 1925, to Oscar D. and Agnette M. (Hagen) Wester and was the youngest of their five children.

She attended school in Horace, N.D., and then moved to Minneapolis, Minn., to live with her sister, Helen, while attending high school. She graduated from Edison High School in Minneapolis. After graduating, she worked with her sister Tessie at Northwest Airlines, later moving to Portland, Ore., to live with her brother Martin Wester. While living in Portland, she met and married, Ralph (Bud) Plummer, a ship’s captain. She and Bud moved to Baltimore, where he was at sea for months at a time. While he was away, she raised chinchillas and sold them for their fur. After a few years in Maryland, they moved to Panama, where Bud piloted ships through the Panama Canal. They enjoyed their life there for 26 years. After retiring, Bud and Dottie spent many years traveling between Texas in the winter and Maine in the summer, always stopping to spend time with her family living in Minnesota and North Dakota.

Dottie was a gracious woman. Always so welcoming and friendly to everyone she met. Her “job” was taking care of Bud. Watching over his health and serving him salt-free ham he discovered on post! She loved the people of Panama, often driving around looking for patio sales and seeking local treasures. She was a collector of antiques, shells, beads and molas. She and Bud enjoyed digging for buried glass bottles, resulting in an impressive collection.

Being a very family-oriented woman and not having any children of her own, she cherished each and every one of her nieces and nephews, and they were always thrilled to see her. She was fun loving and silly, charming and warm, truly an amazing, loving person. She will be sadly missed by everyone.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Bud, her parents, three sisters (Helen Magnuson, Sylvia Flint, Tessie Gran) and one brother (Martin Hagen), one niece and one nephew.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews, her loving caregivers, and many friends.

A graveside service at Forest Hill Cemetery, Harrington, Maine will take place at a later date. Donations may be made in Dottie’s name to The Cass County Historical Society, Bonanzaville, USA, for benefit of the Hagen House, 1351 W. Main Ave., West Fargo, ND 58078. Arrangements entrusted to Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home in Ellsworth.

After graduating from Bowdoin College and Alfred University, Stanley worked as an educator for more than 40 years, serving as a teacher and principal in several New York school districts.

He is survived and remembered by John Ruger and Dee Knisley, Rodney Ruger, Katie Ruger and Rob Zondervan, Charlie and Sarah Ruger, Zach Provonchee and Mary Kachnowski.

The family is grateful for the support and friendship from his special friends Sally Hall and Boots Buyunski. His last few months were made easier and more comfortable with the supervision of nurses and staff at John Knox Village. His last few days were peaceful in the gentle care of Hospice in Orange City.

Reserved but sentimental, Stanley loved and cared deeply for his family and was also a friend, mentor and enabler to many dogs, including Zabik, Amber, Jayda, Norm via intermediaries, and especially Conrad. A longtime member of the Blue Hill Country Club, he was an avid tennis player and golfer.

As summer residents of Blue Hill, Stanley and Marilyn hosted family gatherings at their cozy, traditional home on Pleasant Street overlooking Blue Hill Bay for many years. Stanley looked after and cared for those around him with quiet but proud concern.

Despite insisting that “the best days having a sailboat are the day you buy it and the day you sell it,” Stanley loved sailing and the sea, especially coastal Maine.

Stanley will be loved and missed. His family is planning a private celebration of his life.
