BAR HARBOR

John Coolidge Sweet, 93, died July 29, 2017, at his residence in Bar Harbor. He was born Dec. 20, 1923, in Hulls Cove, the son of Henry Colman and Lena Emily (Hoyt) Sweet Sr. on Elm Tree Dairy Farm, where the milking was done by hand. He is the last of his siblings: Jerome, Hoyt, Isabelle, William and Marcus.

He often told tales of life on the farm, with pigs escaping and horses pulling logs out of the woods to be used for the winter’s wood stove and cutting ice on Lakewood.

He left the farm, as so many young men did at that time, to join in the war effort. During the war, John was stationed in Dunkeswell in Devonshire, England, and flew in B24 Liberators from Murmansk, Russia, to Port Leodi, Africa, in search of Nazi U-boats with the VB103. He told a story of when on a weekend pass he experienced the Blitz in London, and had to run for the air raid shelters. He had left his dog tags on his bunk, and his family was just about to be notified he was MIA when he turned up alive and well for duty.

During the Korean War, he was called back into active duty. In the early 1950s, he was a member of the George Edwin Kirk Post 25 American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps. From 1943 until 1970, the Navy was his lifetime career. He spent time on the USNS Michelson, with the Oceanographic Detachment, mapping the North Atlantic sea bottom. Time was spent at the U.S. Naval Station in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where he revitalized the Boy Scout troop. He also was on the staff of Commander Operational Test and Evaluation Force. He was proud of his top secret clearance and of being a courier for the U.S. Navy. John received many medals and commendations for his outstanding service.

In 1948, he married Geraldine Baker and started a family, raising two sons, John Jr. and David. They were together until her death in 2010.

After retiring from the Navy, he had the opportunity to manage the Jordan Pond House until moving on to the Kimball Terrace Inn in 1975. In 1977, he and Geraldine purchased the Harbourside Inn in Northeast Harbor. He was proud to spend time developing his cherished raised-bed organic garden at the curve of the road at Harbourside Inn. Green beans, tomatoes, potatoes, rhubarb, kale, lettuce and cucumbers, to name a few, were things grown in his small but intense garden. Naturally he was kept busy repairing and upgrading electrical, plumbing and the building itself at Harbourside Inn. Many passers-by, plus his children, learned all about composting, companion planting and French raised beds. “A Plan for a Wonderful Garden” was a talk he presented to the Woman’s Club of Northeast Harbor in 1996. Sharing his gardening knowledge was one of his favorite pastimes.

He is survived by his extended family: Son John and wife, Ann; Son David and wife, Gretchen. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren: John III and son Seth; Christine and husband, Steve Dmitrieff, and their children, Alex, Nicholas and Ivanna; Mike and children Kaden and Phoenix, and their mother, Heather Evans; Megan and husband, Ian Leies, and children Isaac and James; and many nieces and nephews.

A special thank you to all the caregivers who enabled John to die in the comfort of his own home: Megan Sweet, Christine Sweet, John Sweet III, John Sweet Jr., David Sweet, John Evans, Ruth Falt and Nurses Emma Lansing and Betty Mitchell. Also a thank you to Hospice Volunteers of Hancock County who supplied many nurses and volunteers.

A burial will be held Sept. 9, at 11 a.m., at Forest Hill Cemetery in Northeast Harbor. Donations can be made to either Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association, 294 Crosby Brook Road, Unity, ME 04988 or Hospice Volunteers of Hancock County, 14 McKenzie Ave, Ellsworth, ME 04605.

Arrangements by Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert. Condolences may be expressed at www.jordanfernald.com.

SEDGWICK

Peter Greer Osgood, 76, of Sedgwick died in peace Saturday, July 22, 2017, at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Peter was born Dec. 26, 1940, in Waltham, Mass., to Katherine (Greer) and Ernest Osgood.

With his younger brother Ernest, who predeceased him, he enjoyed the quintessential New England childhood in Sudbury, Mass., filled with Boy Scout adventures and not a little mischief. He attended The Fenn School, Belmont Hill School and Lincoln-Sudbury High School, from which he graduated in 1959.

After high school, Peter enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Korea. While there as a 19-year-old, he saw a need and, with support from his hometown of Sudbury, started an orphanage for children of war victims. Later, he served in Vietnam as an information officer. After discharge, Peter attended Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, graduating in three years (1965) with a B.S. in political science and journalism. Subsequently, he served as chairman of the Syracuse University Communications Advisory Board.

Peter Osgood was a pioneer and leading authority in the field of global communications and investor relations. His 50-year career in public relations began in Boston with Newsome & Co., becoming a major shareholder and CEO. He was past director and national president of the National Investor Relations Institute and a member of the NIRI Roundtable, as well as former chairman and president of the Public Relations Society of America. After selling Newsome and assuming the presidency of Carl Byoir & Associates Inc., he served as Byoir’s CEO. When Byoir merged with Hill & Knowlton Inc., Peter served as vice chairman international of H&K. He left the agency to found Osgood, O’Donnell and Walsh. At the end of his career, Peter was owner of Osgood Global, Ltd, with a passport that reflected a lifetime of world travel.

Peter’s skills as a strategic thinker benefited the many nonprofit organizations for which he served. Most notably, over the course of his life he sat on the boards of the Joslin Diabetes Center, Junior Achievement Worldwide and the Business Council for the United Nations. As a director of The Sky Club, atop the then Pan Am Building, he enjoyed a chilled gimlet, followed by Dover sole, overlooking the Manhattan skyline.

Professional accomplishments aside, Peter loved skiing and sailing, building anything from a dollhouse to garden trellises, a postprandial hand of gin rummy with a cold Heineken….and, most of all, his family.

He is survived by his wife, Carol, of Bridgeport, Conn., and Sedgwick, two daughters and their spouses, Greer (Taryn) McCarthy of Darien, Conn., and Blaire (William) Bernard of Wenham, Mass., two stepsons Brooks (Enzii) Jessup of Berkeley, Calif., and Alex Jessup of Los Angeles, Calif. Peter also leaves behind four adored grandchildren, Marley, Stewart, Osgood and Evelyn.

PENOBSCOT

James Theodore Climo Sr., 74, died Monday, July 31, 2017, at his home in Penobscot after a courageous fight with cancer. Jim was born on Oct. 18, 1942, in Wakefield, Mass., the son of William and Eleanor Climo.

Jim was an independent, free-thinker who was deeply involved in the AA community. He was often known to be cantankerous when it came to politics and the establishment. The FBI can now stop monitoring his phone and Facebook. He coached many a stranger and friend to take “one day at a time.”

He was an avid sailor throughout his life. He began sailing and racing sailboats with his older brother, Billy, as a teenager throughout Boston Harbor. He introduced his wife of 26 years, Elaine, to sailing, first on Inshallah, a 29-foot sloop, and later on Colancer, a 50-foot Ketch. He sailed the Colancer to Florida single-handed. With his wife, they sailed off New England, Florida and the Gulf of Mexico.

He could easily sketch anything at any time on any material. He painted ocean scenes with lighthouses, vases of flowers for his wife, and drew many an illustration of water scenes on the back of Unitarian Universalist Congregation Sunday programs. He was known for “recycling” all things metal and reinventing possibilities. His motto was “You are only limited by your imagination.” His family and friends will always remember him as a creative, challenging and deeply loving person.

Jim is survived by his wife, Elaine Gerard-Climo; sons James T. Climo Jr. of Houston, Dana L. Climo and his wife, Kay, of Houston, and Bryan K. Taylor; brother Donald Climo and his stepdaughters, Sheena E. Whittaker and her husband, Richard, of Penobscot; Sherri L. Whittaker of Honolulu, and Lisa L. Haynsworth and her husband, Scott, of Atlanta; and his grandchildren, Julia N. Climo (his text-mate), Taylor S. Climo, Reagan K. Climo, and William G. Climo, all of Houston, Texas, and  his step-grandchildren, Cole and Emma Larson-Whittaker of Penobscot, Lance Tauvela of San Diego, and Spencer and Morgan Haynsworth of Atlanta. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his son, Scot Michael Climo, of Houston, Texas and one brother, William Climo.

Jim traveled extensively as a truck driver. He worked as a supervisor in an American plant in Mexico for many years, worked in construction in the greater Boston area and various positions in welding, painting, and carpentry. As a young man he was the caretaker at a Catholic retirement home for nuns, which left him with many favorable memories.

His memorial service is scheduled for Thursday on the 3rd of August, at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Castine at 4 p.m. with a reception to follow. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Jim’s life. The family would like to thank Beacon Hospice for their compassionate care. Memorial contributions in Jim’s memory may be made to: The Ark Animal Shelter, 60 Barber Lane, Cherryfield, ME 04622.

Townsend Mills “Ted” Cass

SULLIVAN/SUMNER, IOWA

Townsend Mills “Ted” Cass, born in Waterloo, Iowa, in 1934, died peacefully July 30 at a health care facility in Brewer. He spent part of his childhood in Tulsa, Okla., and was for many years a resident of Sumner, Iowa, where the family owned the Cass Family dairy and crop farm. He and his former wife, Nuna, moved to Sullivan in 1986 from Clermont, Iowa.

Ted was a remarkable individual who left a strong impression on everyone who knew him. He spent at least one college summer as a merchant mariner (oiler and wiper), working as a deckhand on a Texaco oil tanker, little knowing that a coasting trip from Texas, which included jumping into Portland Harbor on a dare (and getting out of the water as fast as possible) and a stop at Brewer, would be first glimpses of his last home state.

A Spanish teacher by training, with a degree from Trinity College in Hartford Conn., and a master’s degree at the Middlebury Language Schools in Vermont, he traveled widely in Spain whenever he could. Ted taught at the Minnesota School for the Blind in Faribault, Minn., the Mount Hermon School in Massachusetts, at the Pomfret School in Connecticut, the White Mountain School in New Hampshire and at St. Marks School in Massachusetts. He was a Peace Corps volunteer in Chile, later agricultural program manager in Uruguay, a crew member on the Antarctic research vessel Hero, a philosopher, a traveler, a talker and a vegetable gardener (“I’m going down to talk to the cabbages.”) He was an ardent fan of the Iowa NCAA Hawkeye wrestling team. Locally, he worked at Sorrento’s Blink Bonnie golf course and for Clayton Nowell Plumbing and Heating in Hancock. He and Nuna also ran Green Hill Farm B&B for 10 years.

Ted read widely, was a history buff and had a fascination for people’s’ stories from all walks of life, with good tales of spending one summer working with a Basque shepherd out west. A relative once said, “Ted could hold an intelligent conversation with a fencepost.” He was a good correspondent, who wrote by hand with a fountain pen on yellow paper, or clacked away on an ancient upright typewriter. He was known for his strong convictions and fully engaged friendships.

A series of strokes forced a move to the Brewer Center for Health and Rehabilitation, where Ted lived courageously for 13 years.

He was predeceased by his parents, Richard S. Cass and Jane Pratt Cass, of Sumner, Iowa, and Tulsa, Okla., his sister Lee Cass Carter, and his brother Richard S. Cass Jr. He is survived by his sister-in-law Sandra Cass, nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also remembered by many friends locally and abroad. He will be missed.

Special thanks to Ted’s loyal local and from-away friends, the caring staff at Brewer Center for Health and Rehabilitation, and to his team from Brennan-Alley Associates of Bucksport for their years of continuing care and attention, which made Ted’s last years bearable.

Bragdon-Kelley will host a memorial gathering (informal) for friends to be held from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2017, at 215 Main St., Ellsworth, ME.

Interment will be in the Cass family plot in the Union Mound Cemetery, Sumner Iowa, at Ted’s request.

Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Sumner Public Library 206 N. Railroad Street Sumner, IA 50674 email: library@sumner.lib.ia

BROOKLIN

George L. Allen, 95 of Brooklin died peacefully on Aug. 4, 2017, in the home where he was born. He was a proud Navy veteran of WWII. Over his lifetime he wore many hats — sea captain, boat builder, woodsman and folk art toymaker. George loved to tell stories and entertained audiences of all kinds from tourists to strangers on the street. But his favorite audiences were at the kitchen table or around a stove in a workshop. He had a will to live fully even when challenges made life hard.

He was predeceased by his loving wife, Georgene Allen, and is survived by a son, David Allen, and wife, Sue, daughter Judy Allen and daughter Kathy Allen and her husband, Bob Weldon, and two grandchildren, Jason Pierce and Helen Allen-Weldon. In lieu of flowers and cards, PLEASE go on a boat, tell a story and dream big. A June 2018 celebration is planned.

WINTER HARBOR/MOUNT DESERT

Wesley A. Shaw, 76, died on Aug. 13, 2017, at his home in Winter Harbor after battling diabetes, cancer, heart disease, Pick’s disease and kidney failure for many years. He was born in Cambridge, Mass., Feb. 24, 1941. He was a direct descendent of Mary Chilton, the first woman to step onto Plymouth Rock from the Mayflower in 1620. He was the great-great-great grandson of Frances Shaw, who owned much of the land now known as Winter Harbor and Gouldsboro. He was the eldest son of Malcolm Thoreau Shaw and Phyllis May Shaw, who spent the early years of his life growing up on the family’s tree and horse farm in the small farming town of Plympton, Mass., at the head of the Winnetuxet River and where the Plymouth Pilgrims grazed their cattle in the summers.

After securing his initial bachelor’s degree at Defiance College in Northwestern Ohio, he returned to Southeast Massachusetts and resided in Bridgewater with his wife, Gail Wells Shaw, where they raised their three children. After early years in publishing a small newspaper and working in his father’s land surveying company in the mid-1960s, he entered the education field and with subsequent degrees in counseling psychology (BA, Med, NCC, CAGS and Ph.D.), directed the summer residential program of advanced studies for gifted and talented high school students at Bridgewater State University. He concurrently served as counseling school psychologist and administrator of federal programs for the Bridgewater Public Schools for 28 years. He also worked in a part-time capacity as a therapist for many years at the Massachusetts Correctional Institution for the criminally insane located in Bridgewater.

During this period he also operated part-time real estate and marine/boating businesses, became a USCG-licensed 100-ton master and operated his sail training sloop out of Marion Harbor on Buzzards Bay. (This business was later “moved” to Northeast Harbor on Mount Desert Island in the early 1980s). During this period he also lectured in sailing and seamanship at yacht clubs, libraries, and schools throughout Southern New England and served as the assistant district staff officer in charge of sail education for the Coast Guard’s First CG District. He continued as a visiting lecturer at Bridgewater State and was subsequently accorded professor emeritus status.

Also, throughout this period he remained quite civically active and served as president of the Jaycees, elected member and chairman of the Bridgewater Planning Board for 13 years, chairman of the Industrial Development Commission, Appeals Board, and was active in the First Congregational Church.

In 1976, while living for the summer aboard their small cruising sloops for 60 days, he sailed to Maine and set up his mooring at the head of Somes Sound, purchased land in Somesville up by Long Pond, and subsequently built a small seasonal home. In subsequent years he created the very successful MDI Water Taxi and Tours business out of Northeast Harbor. He also created, under contract from the town of Mount Desert, the present mooring rental system used in Northeast Harbor and served as the town’s mooring rental agent for many years.

Wes retired from his education positions in Bridgewater in 1990, moved full time to Maine, and turned the Long Pond property into his year-round home. Once fully relocated, he remained civically active and served for many years as the treasurer and then president of the Mount Desert Chamber of Commerce, a director of the Southwest Harbor Chamber of Commerce, vice president of the Joint Island Chambers of Commerce, treasurer of the Great Harbor Maritime Museum and member and trustee of the Somesville Union Meeting House, United Church of Christ.

His retirement from the education field in 1990 coincided with the advent of “desktop publishing” and emergence of Apple’s Mac computers. He created a small publishing company in Somesville, Ripples Graphic & Publishing, and created the Northeast and Southwest Harbor’s Port Directories, publishing 40,000 copies annually. He also proudly conceived and created the very successful MDI Business Location Maps — publishing 250,000 copies each year for over 20 years — of what became the “largest distribution map in the state of Maine.” For many years he was considered a “Mac guru” on Mount Desert Island and was happy to help and advise so many others to venture into the computer and digital age.

Health problems forced Wes to sell his Port Directories in 2001 and MDI Water Taxi service in Northeast Harbor in 2006. The Business Location Maps were sadly sold in 2014 prior to his death.

In 2006, in accord with his “downsizing” due to health issues, Wes relocated to a small home adjacent to his beloved ocean at the head of Henry Cove in Winter Harbor. Unable to adjust to a “retired” lifestyle, he created the Winter Harbor Water Taxi & tours service with yet another new boat. Shortly he assumed part-time management of the Winter Harbor Marina and Bar Harbor Ferry dock and also served for a few years as the Winter Harbor town harbormaster. He became an active member of the Schoodic Chamber of Commerce, was an active member of Winter Harbor’s First Baptist Church and studied with the Jehovah Witnesses.

He is survived by his first wife, Gail Parsons Wells Buckingham, of Bridgewater, Mass., and second wife, M. Louise Young Shaw of Winter Harbor; three children, Christopher A. and David W. Shaw of Raynham, Mass., and Candace Shaw Glendenning of Redlands, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Ryan, Karyssa and Kendyll Shaw and Madison and Bryce Shaw, all of Raynham, Mass., Lyam and Logan Glendenning of Redlands, Calif.; brothers, Winston B. Shaw of Bar Harbor and Trenton and Wayne C. Shaw of Stotts City, Mo.; two stepdaughters, Lisa Mechaley Revkin of Cold Spring on the Hudson, N.Y., and Sharon Mechaley of Greenwich, Conn.

Per Wes’s request, no services will be held. His ashes will be scattered on the waters he so loved off the Winter Harbor Marina in Henry Cove, in Somes Sound, and off his beach in Long Pond on Mount Desert Island, and in the family plot in the Brookside Cemetery in Somesville.

Donations in Wes’s memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 15829, Alexandria, VA 22312, or American Heart Association, 51 U.S. Route 1, Suite M, Scarborough, ME 04074, or American Cancer Society/ Maine Cancer Foundation, 107 U.S. Route 1, Suite 250, Falmouth, ME 04105.

Arrangements by Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert, ME 04660.

Condolences may be expressed at www.jordanfernald.com.
