OBIT-CraryBOSTON, MASS. and BLUE HILL — Margot Crary was many things to many people. To her parents, she was everything. To her fiancé and his family, she was a future full of love and happiness. To her grandmother, she was pure joy. To her namesake aunt and uncle, she was their child, too. To her aunts and uncles and cousins, first, second, removed and otherwise, she was the fun one. To two boys growing up on Forbes Stream, she was like a sister. To her girlfriends, she was a confidant, a clothing consultant, and most of all, a true and loyal friend forever. To her many friends from school, she was an intelligent and sharp classmate.

Margot’s outlook was most unique; a girl dressed in high heels and Diane Von Furstenberg, but ready to talk sports amongst the most avid of fans. A woman who yearned to travel the world, but also found happiness in stretching out on the couch with a beloved animal, cat or dog. She loved the Beatles but also boy bands and modern country music. Margot was happy to take a hike in the woods, or a hike on Boston’s Newbury Street. She wasn’t thrilled about winter, but somehow was completely adept at dropping straight down Sugarloaf’s Narrow Gauge.

Margot was born in Bar Harbor, and raised between Prospect Harbor and Blue Hill. She attended the Bay School and GSA. In her pursuit of higher education, Margot attended the University of San Diego, graduated from Northeastern, and received a master’s in journalism from Boston University. Boston was her town. She loved learning and at the time of her death was pursuing a Master of Social Work degree at Simmons College.

Dealing with breast cancer for the past two and a half years brought continuous, massive challenges — though she always brought the best of herself to the task. Despite these challenges, however, Margot was happy. She had found the love of her life, Beck Strah. And she had found her path, helping others. She never lost hope or her dreams. They were with her and are still.

There will be a gathering in Margot’s memory at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 9, 2016, at the Congregational Church, 22 Tenney Hill,  Blue Hill, followed by a reception at the Bay School in Emlen Hall, 17 Bay School Drive, Blue Hill.

Donations in Margot’s name may be made to The Bay School, P.O. Box 950, Blue Hill, ME 04614.

Condolences may be expressed at www.jordanfernald.com.

Ernest Haskell Brooks

OBIT ISL-Ernest BrooksflagBAR HARBOR — Ernest Haskell Brooks, 78, died quietly on March 22, 2016, in Bangor, after a life of creativity and inspired problem-solving. Ernie was born Sept. 5, 1937, in Lynn, Mass., to Earl and Dorothy Brooks. He graduated from Merrimac High School in 1954. Coming from long line of New England artists, he knew he wanted to pursue his passion of art, and enrolled in the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston from 1955-1956. His education was interrupted when he left Boston to serve in the US Coast Guard from 1957-1960.

He made his life’s career designing and building restaurants, bars, the occasional home kitchen and his own home in Tremont. His signature work has defined dining establishments from Gloucester, Mass., and New Orleans, La., to Bar Harbor. His trademark, in addition to his stubby cigar and cocky Confederate cap, was repurposing salvaged wood and architectural details. Old paneling was refinished to build the British pub-style bar at the Thirsty Whale, his hand-carved signs advertised the once popular restaurants Duffy’s Quarterdeck and The MaryJane, and his craftsmanship is still seen in what is now the Black Friar Inn and Pub and Galyn’s Restaurant. Fiercely independent, he worked for clients he liked, and would walk away if not treated with the same respect he gave. His design sense and ability to assess a space and find the best use for it assured he had no shortage of customers, and he became known as the man who put the bar in Bar Harbor.

Conversation was another art to him. He was well-read, and his home had hundreds of neatly organized books on art, history, cooking and philosophy. He thrived on lengthy arguments and well-defended debates.

He also loved to pass on all the things he found so delightful and interesting about the world to his children, and encouraged them to always look at things from every side.

En route from Merrimac to Bar Harbor, his longtime home, he designed and built interiors along the way, and raised three families. His early specialty was Chinese restaurants. A foodie before that was a word, he would watch the chefs at establishments he was designing, and they gladly taught him how to chop and sauté. Food, along with art, were constant elements in Ernie’s world.

There is remarkable circularity to Ernie’s life. When he first came to Bar Harbor, he stayed at a rooming house. The landlady told Ernie she would trade the secret of her blueberry pie filling for his perfectly domed apple pie recipe. That rooming house has since been transformed into Galyn’s Restaurant. Ernie’s woodwork and design create the atmosphere in the upstairs lounge where he first laid his head in Bar Harbor, filled with visions of antique molding, and rebuilt English pubs.

In another full circle, when in his 60s he decided to reach out to his high school love, Dianne. He courted her with letters, and soon they choose to share a life, cruising Marden’s and dining around Bar Harbor at the restaurants Ernie had helped create.

In addition to a legacy of fine craftsmanship Ernie leaves behind a recipe for his killer fish chowder, and a host of loving family and friends.

Ernie is survived by his sweetheart Dianne Ross; sisters Marge Allen and Rhoda Brooks; sons Haskell Brooks and Andy Barker; daughter Bronwyne Hostettler; son Brandon Brooks and his wife Danielle; daughter Morgan Brooks and partner Christian Fitzgerald; daughter Kymry Brooks and fiancé Christian Todhunter; five grandchildren, Indya, Isaac, Julian, Rhianna, and Paisley, and cousin Charlotte Gulezian. Longtime friends include Karen Zimmermann and Dennis Smith, Frank Ryan, and Ray “Fuzzy” Carbone. Ernie was preceded by his dear friend Nathan P. Hall.

A celebration of life for Ernest will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 26, 2016, at Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Somesville, with a gathering to celebrate Ernie’s life to follow at Galyn’s Restaurant, 17 Main St., Bar Harbor.

The family wishes to thank the staff at MDI Hospital and Eastern Maine Medical Center for their kindness and care.

Those who desire may make contributions in Ernie’s memory to a local children’s art program of their choice.

Condolences may be expressed at www.jordanfernald.com.

OBIT-NowlandEAST BLUE HILL — Nicholas Penn Nowland Sr. died after battling lung cancer on Tuesday, March 29, 2016, at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital. He was born July 1, 1942, in New York City, and his parents were Roger Lovett Nowland and Rosaline (Schladermundt) Nowland. Nick grew up in Stamford, Conn., attending New Canaan Country Day School through ninth grade. He then attended Stamford High School and moved to East Blue Hill in 1960, finishing his senior year of high school at George Stevens Academy. He attended the University of Maine at Orono, taking night classes from 1967 to 1970, while working at A.B. Hendrick and Son from 1960 to 1977. The UMO campus closed due to the Vietnam War demonstrations in 1970 and he never returned to classes there. Nick worked at E.L. Shea for six years and with Jon Woodward for two years. He then operated his own businesses, Blue Hill Carpentry and Building, from 1987 to present, as well as caretaking for Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Morgan of East Blue Hill for many years.

Nick summered in East Blue Hill from age 2 at the home “Lee Shore” on York Road. He loved the water, boating and went lobstering with Happy Long and later on with Cecil (Mott) Long. Nick bought his own Sisu inboard engine boat in the mid-1970s and named it Sand Dollar. He was the happiest while on the water, exploring islands in Blue Hill Bay and many happy days were spent on the Sand Dollar with his family and friends. He enjoyed clamming, hunting, cookouts and always had a bountiful garden. He also helped out all the old timers in East Blue Hill, especially in his younger years; checking in on them, bringing in wood, doing odd jobs and making sure they had everything they needed. Folks truly looked forward to his visits and many homemade donuts or cookies were usually waiting for him.

Nick was predeceased by Donna Self Nowland, the mother of his three children. He is survived by his son Nicholas P. Nowland Jr. and his wife Amy of Sedgwick; his son C. Martin Nowland of Northwood, N.H.; his daughter Lisa Nowland Roccaro and her husband, Joe, of East Moriches, N.Y.; six grandchildren: Benjamin, Abigail, and Megan Nowland; Spencer and Isaac Nowland; and Isabel Roccaro. He is also survived by his sister Rosaline (Schladermundt) Moore and her husband, Tabb, of Washington, D.C.; and nephew Jonathan Moore of Montvale, N.J., and Ann (Moore) Villano of Lakeville, Conn.; his cousins Susan (Schaldermundt) Ulseth of New York, N.Y., and Joan (Shladermundt) Osborn of Riverside, Conn. Nick is also survived by his caring longtime partner, Donna (Abbott) Ingalls, known by his family as Dee. Nick and Dee traveled together and wintered in Texas, Alabama and finally Bluffton, S.C. She has been a caring and supportive partner, friend and confidante. She is also and avid scrap booker, documenting family happenings, milestones, birthdays and holidays.

There will be a private interment for family only at Seaside Cemetery. We hope to have a gathering for family, friends and neighbors in the afternoon on Saturday, July 2, 2016, in East Blue Hill at the family home. The family would like to thank the nurses, physicians’ assistants, doctors and staff of Blue Hill Memorial Hospital for all of their exceptional personal care. We appreciate all of their time, patience and kindness.

Nick’s wishes were that donations be made in lieu of flowers to the American Red Cross of Maine, Donation Processing Center, P.O. Box 9802, Portland, ME 04104 or to the East Blue Hill Village Improvement Association (EBHVIA) Boat Ramp Fund, c/o Dennis Moran, Treasurer, P.O. Box 59, East Blue Hill, ME 04629.

FRANKLIN — Rosabel Wells Clark passed away March 30, 2016, in Ellsworth. She was born March 4, 1928, in Shelton, Conn., the daughter of William Bennett and Lottie May Wells.

She attended schools in Stratford, Conn., the Danbury Teachers College, and she also received a master’s degree from the Divinity School of Drew University. She made a trip to Communist Russia, taking Bibles to the people there, a dangerous mission in 1970. Wanting to be a missionary, she became an English correspondent at the Casa Materna Orphanage in Naples, Italy. She later returned to the United States to care for an aunt who had adopted her and her siblings when she was orphaned at the age of 6. At that time, Rosabel returned to teaching in the Stratford school system. She married Hoyt Clark in 1973, and soon moved with him to his ancestral home in Franklin. Rosabel loved people, and the Lord, Jesus Christ, to whom she devoted her life. She conducted home Bible studies, and never ceased teaching and encouraging others in their love for Jesus.

She is survived by her husband, Hoyt; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her three brothers and a sister.

If she had been able to know the care, the compassion, and the overflowing love of the doctors, nurses and other caretakers for her at the Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, she would have been overwhelmed and overjoyed.

A memorial service celebrating her love for Jesus will be held at 1 p.m., April 10, 2016, at the United Baptist Church, 28 Hancock St., Ellsworth. No flowers, please.

Arrangements by Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St. Ellsworth.

Condolences may be expressed at www.jordanfernald.com.
