OBIT-WeberLITTLE DEER ISLE — Joan Dorothy Grogan Weber, 90, died Feb. 23, 2016, after a rich life. She was born on Dec. 5, 1925, in Flaxton, N.D., in a raging blizzard. She was delivered at home by her father, Dr. John S. Grogan; her mother was Magna Melby Grogan. The family moved to Wadena, Minn., where she spent a happy childhood with her wonderful parents and siblings. She was active in many extracurricular activities and was valedictorian of her graduating class at Wadena High School. Joan attended the University of Minnesota, where she was elected to the Mortar Board Society (a group comprising the 20 most outstanding women on campus), was a member of Kappa Delta, treasurer of the Pan Helenic Society, and a member of the campus YWCA. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota in 1947 and a master’s degree in 1949 from the Columbia School of Social Work in New York City.

She met her future husband on a train when she was returning to New York from a Christmas visit to Minnesota. When she arrived at home, she told her roommate that she had met the man she was going to marry. She married Robert Evander Weber on the following Dec. 21, 1950, in her New York apartment. Joan and Bob moved to Syracuse, N.Y., where Bob took a teaching position at Syracuse University and Joan worked for a social services agency. After several moves and the births of three children, they settled in Long Valley, N.J., where they raised their family. Joan stayed at home with her young children and for several years was largely a single parent when Bob was working for the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare in Washington, D.C. During this time, Joan was instrumental in establishing a local library and she acted as a volunteer when it opened. She served on the PTA and with her husband she helped found the Association for Children with Learning Disabilities. After her children were well established in school she resumed her social work career and worked at Welkind Neurological Hospital, in Chester, N.J., until her retirement. While at Welkind, she supported patients and families, and was ahead of her time in navigating the insurance bureaucracy to get her patients the services they needed. She also pioneered programs for independent living for her wheelchair-bound clients.

In 1945, Joan volunteered in a summer program for children in Stonington. She fell in love with the place and the people, and the family vacationed there each year. When Joan retired, she was finally able to find her house by the sea in Maine and she moved to Little Deer Isle in 1990. She immediately immersed herself in the community and used every moment of her time to serve others. She began as a volunteer for Healthy Peninsula, Growing Up Reading, and as a mentor in the elementary school. Joan also became a hospice volunteer and helped families in this capacity for about 20 years, then remained active in an advisory capacity. She joined the board of the Washington-Hancock Community Agency and was helpful in the development of the Incubator without Walls and Machias daycare center. She also helped to found Friendship Cottage, in Blue Hill, a center that provides vital daycare services for dependent adults. She continued her work with WHCA until her death. Joan was also on the board of the Eastern Agency on Aging and believed in the agency’s vital work. Joan was also a mentor, role model, and cheerleader for many people in our community. She touched countless lives with her kindness, acceptance, lack of judgment, and belief in the inherent worth of every person.

Joan was grateful for the gift of getting to live each day and appreciating all that was contained within it. She took great joy in the natural world and was awed and delighted by her observations and those of others. She sought to learn something every day: she recently completed her last Senior College course and was active in a book group.

Joan was predeceased by her husband, Robert. She is survived by her children Robert and his wife Nancy of Boston; Virginia, daughter Jill and husband Rick Mack, of Bar Harbor; and son John, of Bangor. She is also survived by grandchildren Jill, Erin, Tristan, Devin and Maeve, and great-grandson Henry, all of whom adored their Grammie. She leaves behind many, many other people who loved and respected her. A celebration of her life will be held this summer; an announcement will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hancock County Healthcare and Hospice and Hospice Volunteers of Hancock County or to the charity of your choice.

OBIT-HaywardSTEUBEN — Dwight E. Hayward, 57, of Gouldsboro and Steuben, passed away unexpectedly on Feb. 19, 2016, at Eastern Maine Medical Center surrounded by loved ones.

Dwight was born May 30, 1958, in Ellsworth, the son of Morris Hayward and Loretta Schulz. Dwight attended Sumner Memorial High School and settled into a career as a mechanic and construction worker in Gouldsboro.

Dwight spent his life in Downeast Maine. He was a devoted father and grandfather, giving all he could to his family. He was happiest spending time with his children, sharing his knowledge and love of all things mechanical with his boys, and supporting his daughter with all of her life’s adventures and accomplishments. His life was lit up by the addition of a grandchild, James Hayward, two years ago. He was proud of being a Grampy to his grandson, who he adored.

Over the years, Dwight became known for his uncanny abilities as a competent mechanic with many a local claiming “there wasn’t an engine he couldn’t fix.” Dwight’s love of mechanics led to a passion for car racing as well. He spent many a year racing at Speedway 95. He participated in stock racing, as car #16, and the “Bomber” races. He was always ready to volunteer to lend a hand to others racing, by working on their pit crews when he wasn’t competing.

Dwight is survived by his four children; Dwight (Dwighty) Hayward and wife Kristen Burke; James P. Hayward and Taylor Wallace and their son James S. Hayward; Katrina Hayward, and Jessob Hayward. Dwight is remembered by his significant other, Rachel Newenham, and her family, and many extended family and friends including Janean Joy.

OBIT-PhilioflagGOULDSBORO — David R. Philio, 67, of Gouldsboro passed away peacefully at home on Feb. 28, 2016, after a courageous battle with brain cancer. Born May 17, 1948, in Troy, N.Y., he was the son of Robert T. Philio and Florence Higgins Philio.

David graduated from Shenendehowa High School in Clifton Park, N.Y., in 1966. He attended Lakeland College in Sheboygan, Wis., where he earned a B.S. in biology and was a member of Mu Lambda Sigma. Drafted into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, David was deployed to Walter Reed Army Medical Center, where he spent two years working in the pathology department.

David’s 20s were filled with hard work and adventure. His jobs included working for a hot roofing company and refueling nuclear tanks. He also took a special road trip across the country and through British Columbia, Canada. In 1977, David met his soul mate, Amy, and they were married on June 17, 1978. They fell in love with Maine while on vacation, and they moved into their home in Gouldsboro in 1982. David cut wood and did whatever he could find for work to provide for his wife and three young daughters. Anyone who knew him could attest to the fact that he was an incredibly hardworking and resourceful person. One small roofing job led to more carpentry work. David had found his passion, and over the next 30 years he built around 80 houses in the Gouldsboro area. He never needed to advertise; word got around about his beautiful craftsmanship, honesty and fairness.

Perhaps David’s most defining quality was his blend of strength and kindness. His smiling eyes and boyish grin seemed contradictory to his crushing handshake. David was a patient, humble and honest man who was always willing to lend a helping hand. He impacted many people during his lifetime and will continue to do so for many years to come.

David was a modern day Daniel Boone — he felt at home in the woods and was extremely knowledgeable about and respectful of nature. Spending time in his beloved Adirondacks every summer as a child helped to foster his love of hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed gardening, doing projects in his workshop, jigsaw puzzles and spending time at the cabin. David’s ultimate joy came from spending time with his family, whether it be harvesting pumpkins or teaching his four grandsons how to fish.

David is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Amy (Petter) Philio; beloved daughters, Rebecca Philio of Cambridge, Mass.; Meghan Scott and her husband Aaron of Gouldsboro; and Rachel Umphrey and her husband Matt of Bar Harbor; and four adored grandsons — Deegan and Dalton Scott and Garrett and Spencer Umphrey.

David leaves his loving sister Ellen Philio Bresnahan of Southington, Conn.; and his special nieces Kelly Coulter, Heather Roy, and Erin Bresnahan; also great-nieces Ashley and Sarah Mafale and Emma and Dakota Roy, all of Connecticut.

Also surviving are his sister-in-law Pamela Petter; brother-in-law Jeffrey Petter and his wife Donna of Schenectady, N.Y.; nephews Aaron Hack of Seattle, Wash., and Conor and Mark Petter of Schenectady, N.Y.

David is also survived by his beloved aunt, Mae Renzi, of Waterford, N.Y., and many special cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his parents and his stepparents Frederick Palmer and Dorothy Philio.

The family wishes to acknowledge the wonderful care that David received at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Lafayette Family Cancer Center. They are also thankful for the wonderful care and work provided by Hancock County HomeCare & Hospice.

Per David’s wishes, there will be no calling hours. There will be a celebration of David’s life in the spring. If so desired, memorial contributions in David’s memory can be made to the Lafayette Family Cancer Center in Brewer c/o EMHS Foundation, P.O. Box 931, Bangor, ME 04402. Alternatively, contributions may be made to Hancock County HomeCare & Hospice, 441 Main St., Ellsworth, ME 04605.

Arrangements in care of Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth. Condolences may be expressed at www.jordanfernald.com.

OBIT-RichterNEW YORK, N.Y., SORRENTO and GARRISON, N.Y. — Patricia (Patty) Ewing Richter, a lifelong resident of Manhattan and Sorrento, and Garrison, N.Y., passed away on the morning of March 1, 2016, just a few weeks short of her 90th birthday, at Kendal on Hudson in Sleepy Hollow, N.Y. She passed peacefully following a brief but valiant struggle with sudden and complex health issues. She was surrounded by family, dear friends and expert professional caregivers throughout the last month of her decline.

Patty was born in New York City on March 17, 1926, to William F.C. Ewing and Emily Fordyce Dodge. She was a proud New Yorker whose grandmother told her that the St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Fifth Avenue was in honor of her! She loved music, and until recently was able to enjoy monthly trips to the NY Philharmonic with her lifelong friend, Edie. She was also an unwavering Yankees fan!

Patty met the love of her life, Peter, after World War II and they were married in June 1949. She is survived by her three devoted sons and their wives: Eric (Amy) and Peter (Kathy) of Garrison, N.Y., and Curt (Jaana) of Helsinki, Finland. She is also survived by her four beloved grandchildren, Paul and Elizabeth of Garrison, N.Y., and Marianna, and William of Finland; and by her sisters, Fordyce Van Winkle and Jennifer Ewing, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Patty was intensely proud of her three sons and she loved each of her grandchildren unconditionally, and delighted in their unique interests and talents. Patty was also like a “second Mom” to the Roy and Perkins families, and during her summers in Sorrento, she befriended many young people who have become adult friends. Patty worked as Rep. Bill Green’s chief of staff, and also as Mayor John V. Lindsay’s commissioner for volunteers. She began life as a Republican but later in life became a Democrat and was fiercely political.

Kendal was a place where Patty thrived. There she enjoyed the company of the many dear friends she made, and rarely missed her weekly games of Mahjong. She also attended a variety of activities including conferences, musical events, and participating in the “bell choir.” She will be fondly remembered at Kendal for her sincere interest in the staff, and for her love of grilled cheese sandwiches, coffee with a lot of milk, and chocolate, particularly Hershey Bars.

Memorial services are planned for May 21, 2016, at St. Phillips Church in Garrison, N.Y., and also in Sorrento, Maine on July 23, 2016, at the Church of the Redeemer.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations in Patty’s memory, to: Doctors Without Borders, P.O. Box 5030, Hagerstown, MD 21741; or the Maine Sea Coast Mission, 127 West St., Bar Harbor, ME 04609.

A graduate of Sewanhaka High School, Floral Park, N.Y., in 1950, her early adult life on Long Island, N.Y., was spent raising her son, Steven, and daughter, Mary. Joan had a knack for making the simplest of times the best of times. She was very involved in the community and was a Den Mother of Cub Scout Pack 300 in Valley Stream, N.Y., for several years.

Joan moved in 1976 from East Islip, N.Y., to Hancock with her husband, Armando Boccia. She loved the quiet, laid-back lifestyle that coastal Maine offered, spending time gardening, taking trips to the lake with friends and family, and hosting wonderful dinner parties in their cabin in the woods. Among her many creative talents, her cooking was unsurpassed. She shared this talent with countless people after opening an Italian restaurant with her husband and for over 20 years had put her all into the local business known to many as Ristorante Armando’s.

Joan was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Armando, and her two sisters, Harriet Demott and Margaret Burmester.

Joan is survived by her children: Steve Montague of Franklin; Mary Montague of Lakewood, Colo.; Ed Montague and his wife, Jennifer, of Sullivan; and Rosemarie Boccia-Young and her husband, Colby A. Young Jr., of Hancock. Joan is also survived by her five grandchildren, Cassandra, Annie, Julia, Savannah and Victoria as well as three step-grandchildren and her dearest friend, Mary Welsh of Sullivan.

A celebration of life will be held on March 26, 2016, at 1 p.m. at the former Armando’s restaurant on Route 1 in Hancock.

Roice Saunders, photographed for an interview with The Ellsworth American in 2006.

flagELLSWORTH — Roice Everett Saunders, 93, died unexpectedly March 15, 2016, at his home. He was born in Sedgwick, July 20, 1922, the son of Austin E. and Alta (Gray) Saunders.

Roice went to Gilman High School and then trade school in Somerville, Mass. He joined the 15th Air Force on March 7, 1944, and was shipped to Italy during WWII to be a top turret gunner aboard B-24 bombers, which he called “flying boxcars.” After 24 combat missions, he returned to Massachusetts in 1945. Roice married Helen Kendrick in 1943 and they moved back to Maine in 1947 to raise their family. They settled in Ellsworth and he worked for the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co. and went to work as a produce manager at the A&P store on Main Street. When it closed, he worked for the next nine years at the A&P in Machias until his retirement after 37 years.

Roice bought his first horse in town and rode her to their home on the Surry Road. He never felt that having a horse was a necessity, but they soon became his passion. He learned to shoe horses from Bill Carlisle. It wasn’t long before he asked Roice to work with him part time and when Bill retired Roice inherited his customers. He retired from horseshoeing in 2005 at the age of 82. He could tell a wicked story, loved to fish the Allagash and raised many fine hunting dogs. He lived an amazing life and was at peace with all of it at the time of his death. Roice was a member of the Lygonia Masonic Lodge No. 40, A.F. & A.M. of Ellsworth, various horse associations, and was a past member of the Maine Trapper’s Association.

Roice is survived by his special companion Edie Allen; two daughters, Judith Crowley and Joyce Mitchell and husband, Gary; four grandchildren, Tamara Crowley and partner Andrew Brown; Robin Hennigan and husband, Brian; Kevin Crowley and partner Carrie Reardon, and Tracy Crane; six great-grandchildren, Austin Crowley-Dunn, Declan Crowley, Alexis Hennigan, Brianna Crane, Marina Lint and Morganne Jeffries; two great-great-grandchildren, Tyler Parsons and Lydia Stanwood; many nieces and nephews; and one beloved horse, Mr. T. Roice was predeceased by his wife, Helen, in 1991 and by his brother, Ray Saunders.

Calling hours will be held 5-7 p.m., Friday, March 18, 2016, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St. Ellsworth, where a memorial service will be held 10 a.m., Saturday, March 19, 2016. A private graveside service will be held in Woodbine Cemetery in the spring.

Contributions in Roice’s memory may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Condolences may be expressed at www.jordanfernald.com.

Barbara Jo Peppey

Obit Barbara PeppeyWherever a beautiful soul has been there is a trail of beautiful memories.

SILVER CITY, N.M. — Barbara Jo Peppey died suddenly in an accident involving black ice on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2016. She was a loving and much loved wife, mother, sister, aunt and grandmother. She is fondly remembered by her many loyal friends as a vivacious person and eager advocate always available and ready to help in person. She was dedicated to getting things done in many large or small humanitarian causes. Barbara was a highly regarded, gifted social worker fully engaged in the lives and challenges of many people. She was also a devoted teacher of social workers who helped many others carry on her life’s work.

In addition to her many dear and grieving friends, Barbara leaves bereft and behind her loving husband, Gerald (Gerry) Bryan; her son, Liam McSweeney and his wife, Sarah Staples; Sarah’s parents, Peggy and Dick Staples; her daughter-in-law, Dr. Heather Bryan and her husband, Patrick Gillen; and their children Clodagh, Annie and Finn Bryan-Gillen. Also, her sister Lynda Wiltse and dear partner William Webber; her brother, Mike Peppey; Peppey nieces and nephews, Amber, Robyn, Dylan; and Wiltse nephews, Brian and Steven. Also, her sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Paul Raffensperger; and her former husband and Liam’s father, Edward McSweeney. Barbara’s private live was dedicated to her family, starting with her treasured son, Liam, born in Bangor, on Feb. 26, 1984. Connecting with her wonderful family and many friends filled her up. Lovely visits, cards and phone calls to them filled her spare moments and her heart.

Barbara was born April 3, 1950, in Detroit, Mich., to the late Robert and Gloria Peppey. She graduated from Albion College with a BS in biology, also gaining a master’s in rehabilitation counseling from Bowling Green State in Ohio and a MSW, Masters in Social Work, from the University of Maine.

Barbara ran Head Start in Aroostook, Washington and Hancock counties, a large sector of rural Maine, for many years. She also taught graduate classes in social work at the University of Maine in Orono. In 2001, she was hired to create, direct and shape Healthy Peninsula, which she did for more than 10 years. Her many achievements set standards of excellence throughout the state and beyond. Even while retired, Barbara wasn’t done. Western New Mexico University, in Silver City, hired her to teach social work part-time statewide. She is fondly remembered by all who worked with her as the person who could get things done brilliantly. She cared! Her loving work sparkled and inspired all around.

Barbara and Gerry were delighted to be married on Aug. 21, 2009, in Silver City, N.M., and built a sweet cabin on Cross Mountain in beautiful Pinos Altos next to the Gila National Forest and a few miles from Silver City. They loved holding each other in awe of surrounding beauty, stunning wilderness, curious wildlife, eye-popping sunrises and sunsets. Their time together in the New Mexico, at the Lords Cove cottage in Brooksville, and in Berry Cove in Lamoine nurtured them and filled them with gentle joy and fun. They loved sharing with each other and others and just kept grinning, walking, jogging trails, floating in the ocean, climbing mountains, biking, paddling, watching sunsets and cooking delicious meals together and sharing it all with friends and family.

Barbara was a twinkle. She built sweet and colorful flower gardens accented with subtle and surprising shrines that peeked out of corners, nooks and crannies. These mimicked the twinkle in her eyes when others noticed them. Eye twinkling was a trait of Barbara’s that made everyone who knew her want to twinkle back. What a joy was Barbara Peppey to all her family and friends!

“Amelie” was Barbara’s favorite movie. The main character and Barbara shared quiet do-gooding, sweet grins and shy twinkling glances.

Barbara loved many people and many things. She had fun with family and friends in person and on the phone. She loved to share dreams, play Scrabble to win, watch the weather everywhere, connect with ideas, tides, stars, art and every curiosity in sight. She adored sitting still with a good novel or just sitting quietly and mindfully at dawn and dusk. In New Mexico, she loved being with friends and Gerry, making beautiful pottery in the ceramics program and learning to weave at WNMU. She was an avid student there for several years.

Our beautiful, slightly or slyly shy, sometimes enigmatic and quietly private Barbara is terribly missed and greatly loved by those she left behind in the prime of her life.

There will be celebrations of her life. The first will be in Silver City, N.M: a christening of the urn that is being created by teachers and close friends Jessica Wilson, Blythe Whiteley and Phoebe Lawrence. The celebration will be Saturday, April 16, 2016, at the ceramics studio of WNMU in the McCray Art Building (next to the tennis courts) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. It will be moderated by Claude Smith who got her started with making pottery. There will be finger foods and an open mike for those who care to share Barbara thoughts and stories. The family requests in lieu of flowers that friends consider a donation to Friends of Clay and/or its scholarship program. Send to Western New Mexico University Expressive Arts Department, Attn: Jessica Wilson, PO Box 680, Silver City, NM 88062.

A second celebration will be in held in Brooksville at David’s Folly Farm on Sunday, May 29, 2016, from 2 p.m., 1390 Coastal Road, Brooksville, ME 04617. Anne Ferrara and Gary Vencill will moderate. Many preparations are under way thanks to Healthy Peninsula and the Reversing Falls Sanctuary. There will be snacks and an open celebration as we share memories, reflections and stories about Barbara. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Healthy Peninsula and/or Reversing Falls Sanctuary and their efforts to help everyone thrive in place.

As per her request, Barbara’s ashes will be in beautiful places she cherished here and abroad, especially in Maine, New Mexico and Michigan, where she lived. Many little celebrations will accompany the scatterings conducted by Gerry and her loving family.
