Marie J. Hall

Obit- HallBAR HARBOR – Our mother, Marie J. Hall (1920-2016), has died. At an early age she lost her own mother and had to learn to live with this loss. She grew up to be a strong woman and a woman of strong convictions.

She believed in herself and in her children; she was energetic and determined to do everything she could to ensure that she and her children did the very best that they could in everything they attempted.

A teacher, translator, traveler, gardener and loyal wife, an avid reader, ever curious about what was going on in the wider world, her interests ranged from art, literature and poetry to politics and natural history. She was open to the beauties and wonders of nature, in which she saw the hand of a higher power at work.

She gave a great deal of thought to a great number of topics; she was an articulate woman who could be counted on to have something well considered to say about whatever she turned her mind to. She truly and strongly believed that there was a right way and a wrong way to do things. She has now found her peace. She is survived by her children Mark, Michael (Judy), Molly (Lori), Thomas (Shelley), Peter and Kateri (Tom), thirteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, August 20, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Casimir’s RC Church, 502 New Jersey Avenue, Riverside, New Jersey 08075.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Marie’s name may be made to South Jersey Food Bank.

Condolences may be expressed at www.chadwickmemorialhome.com or www.jordanfernald.com.

Joellyn Toler Duesberry

Obit- ISL & EA- DuesberryMOUNT DESERT ISLAND – Joellyn Toler Duesberry, age 72, died at her home in Greenwood Village, Colo., on Aug. 5, 2016, of pancreatic cancer. Born and brought up in Richmond, Va., she eventually matriculated to Smith College, graduating in 1966, with highest honors. En route to her career as a landscape painter, she acquired a master’s degree from the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University.

Joellyn Duesberry’s ties to Maine began in Acadia with its lily ponds, forests, bogs, hills, gorges, and creeks. These have always been the subjects Joellyn Duesberry wished to capture in her own peculiar fashion of painterly abstraction, which consistently revived her with a visual jolt every year. Over the years, “Joly” bicycled, hiked, walked everywhere on Mount Desert, Big Cranberry, Schoodic Point and as skill and confidence emerged, shock of Maine’s beauty never failed to accelerate her productivity, identifying with all its waters and hard rocks.

A New Yorker transplanted to a Colorado farm with an NEA grant of 1986, Joellyn Duesberry fed her abstract language with the jolt of the geometry and abstraction she rediscovered in Maine, whether the subject be the red rock flats of Schoodic, the tide at Thunder Hole, the crashing sea at Wonderland, or the angular patterns above and below the windless water in Hall Quarry. Because she was a completely self-taught artist, except for a month in 1986, with Richard Diebenkorn, Joellyn Duesberry was aware there was no influence on her whatsoever. Rather her instinctual search of the Maine coastal landscape in the past five decades for subjects en plein air relating to aesthetic elements fascinated her, giving Duesberry peak experiences unattainable anywhere else.

Many exhibitions followed her development as a painter. In addition to being represented by The Gallery at Somes Sound, her work resides in museums in New York, Virginia, California, Denver Art Museum and others in Colorado, and innumerable private collections.

A retrospective show of Joellyn Duesberry’s Maine collection of work will be featured in July of 2017 at The Gallery at Somes Sound.

Besides her husband, she leaves behind her sister Pat Washko, stepdaughters Rebekah Kowal (David Bullwinkle) and Jessica Kowal (Blaine Harden) and grandchildren Lucinda and Arno Harden and Noah and Isaac Bullwinkle. A memorial service will be planned in the future. Contributions in Joellyn’s name to Compassion & Choices, an organization Joly strongly believed in, would be welcome.

flagTOWN HILL – Roland Sans Salsbury Jr., building contractor, veteran, public servant, friend, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home in Town Hill on Aug. 19, 2016, at the age of 89. Roland was born Jan. 16, 1927, in Otis, to Erma (Jordan) and Roland S. Salsbury Sr.

Roland lived on the farm with his parents and nine siblings until high school. During his senior year of high school, he joined the U.S. Army and served during World War II in the Philippines and Japan. Following the war, he met Allison M. Smith of Town Hill. They eloped May 6, 1947, and left for the West Coast for a “honeymoon” that lasted 10 years. During their time in Washington state, Roland attended Olympic Junior College and Bremerton Business College. He and Allison operated “Salsbury’s Let’s Eat Café” in Bremerton until they returned to Maine with two young children in 1957. Roland worked for Fred Beal Co. in Ellsworth before starting his building business, Salsbury of Town Hill. He and his crew built many homes and businesses on and around Mount Desert Island and were caretakers for numerous seasonal homes.

Always interested in public affairs and policy, Roland entered the arena of “elected official” as a member and chair of the Bar Harbor Town Council in 1969. Following three terms serving the town, he was elected to four terms as state representative for Bar Harbor and surrounding communities. A conservative legislator, he treated all constituents with concern and fairness and brought the same integrity and work ethic to this job as he did to his business endeavors.

Winding down his construction business and political obligations in his 70s, Roland continued as project manager for refurbishing the Sea Coast Mission building in Bar Harbor and the construction of the Municipal Building in Northeast Harbor. He also became an avid fan of MDIHS sports, where he watched his grandchildren participate on the field, on the court or in the band. As his physical health began to fail, he was content to continue to follow the Red Sox with great anticipation and keep up with many televised sports and national politics. He also became a voracious reader, making it difficult for his family to keep him supplied with the latest biography or history book. His wit, sarcasm and signature cigar stayed with him until his final days at home where he was comforted by family, friends and the wonderful ladies from Hancock County Hospice and Home Care.

Roland is survived by his wife of 69 years, Allison (Smith) Salsbury; his sons, Roland S. Salsbury III of Town Hill and Robert T. Salsbury of Lamoine; his daughter and her husband, Kathleen and Gary Stanley of Lamoine; grandchildren, Rebecca Salsbury of London, England, and her mother, Vicki, of Lamoine, Tyler Stanley and his wife, Allie, of Gorham, Margaret Stanley and Emma Stanley of Portland, Brandy Brasted of Fort Meyers, Florida, Frances Salsbury of Town Hill, and great-granddaughters, Natalie Camilia of Florida, and Luzetta Stanley of Gorham, his brother and his wife, Richard and Virginia Salsbury of Ellsworth, sister-in-law Clara Salsbury, and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Roland, Sr. and Erma; brothers and sisters and spouses, Robert Salsbury, Kenneth and Arlene Salsbury, Marion and Horace Sargent, Eleanor and Donald Coffin, Lysle and Amelia Salsbury, Raymond Salsbury, Errold and Peggy Salsbury, Laurice and Kenneth Lorenz; and grandson Aaron James Salsbury.

Services will be held at Lamoine Baptist Church, 24 Lamoine Beach Road, Lamoine on Sept. 2 at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Brooks Linde officiating.

Friends and family may donate in Roland’s name to Hancock County Home Care and Hospice at EMHS Foundation, P.O. Box 931, Bangor, ME 04402-0931.

OBIT-KatesTRENTON Eleanor Clare Kates passed away on Aug. 18, 2016. She had battled Parkinson’s disease in her final years, but she died peacefully at home in Trenton, surrounded by loving family members. She was 89 years old.

To the many who loved her, including her beloved husband, Bob, who survives her, she was known simply as “Ellie.” Ellie was born in 1927 in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Sam and Mary Hackman. Her father, Sam, whom she loved very much, was an immigrant from Eastern Europe. Sam would have been amazed to see how his daughter’s life unfolded. Throughout the many opportunities of her life, Ellie was always excited but humble, as she had known a harder side of life growing up.

Ellie and Bob started their family in Gary, Ind., where they were active in union and racial equality movements. From there they moved their family to several locations, including Chicago, Worcester, Mass., Tanzania, East Africa, Providence, R.I., and finally Trenton. Through Bob’s work they had the opportunity to travel widely around the world and Ellie’s adventurous spirit and love of arts and culture were reflected in her many stories. Recognizing her natural compassion, people loved talking to Ellie. Even while in the line at the grocery store she would have several conversations with clerks and other customers.

In each of the places that Ellie lived, she led projects aimed at improving people’s lives. She started the Elm Park Center for Early Childhood Education in Worcester, Mass., still running more than 40 years later. Ellie earned her master’s degree in counseling at the age of 50, and for 20 years specialized in gerontology. She provided clinical support to the Emmaus Homeless Shelter in Ellsworth.

She had three children who will miss her very much: Katherine Kates and Barbara Kates of Bangor, and Jonathan Kates of Worcester, Mass. Truly the center of Ellie’s happiness in her later years, and the reason she moved to Trenton, was her grandchildren: Sara Kates-Chinoy of Portland, Ore., Sam Kates-Goldman of Olympia, Wash., Jesse Kates-Chinoy of El Salvador, Hannah Shepard presently of Bangor, Miriam Kates-Goldman of Bangor, and Shanyu Kates, presently of San Francisco, Calif. Their love for her can be seen through their many Grandma stories.

Ellie’s two sons-in-law, Dennis Chinoy and Sol Goldman, were very dear to her and she was so pleased to welcome into the family her grandchildren’s spouses, Wade Shepard, Eric Nelson, and Mariemm Pleitez. Ellie felt blessed to enjoy three wonderful great-grandchildren: Petra, Jack and Rivka. She loved her times with her sisters, Lee and Hinny, her brothers-in-law Leo and Lou and nieces, nephews, cousins and their families.

A memorial service is being planned for the fall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ellie’s name to either the Elm Park Center for Early Childhood Education, 284 Highland St., Worcester, Mass., or the Emmaus Homeless Shelter, 51 Main St., Ellsworth.

Obit- GuthrieELLSWORTH – Thomas J. Guthrie Sr. passed away peacefully and with his wife of 65 years, Diane, at his side on Aug. 25, 2016, in Ellsworth. He recently turned 91 and lived a happy, productive life. He was born Aug. 8, 1925, the last of 11 children born to Ada and Mark Guthrie Sr., in Bar Harbor.

After graduating as an engineer from Maine Maritime Academy in 1945, Tom went to sea with the Sprague Steamship Co. and traveled the East Coast as well as across the Atlantic, typically hauling coal. Some of his most memorable cross-Atlantic trips were onboard “Liberty Ships” that brought solders home from the European continent following the end of World War II. It was during one of his visits home to Ellsworth that he met the former Diane Chase of Winter Harbor and on another visit he purchased a share of the former Carl’s Grocery on High Street. Diane and Carl’s would soon bring Tom home from sea for good. Tom and Diane were married June 29, 1951, and soon Tom was an ex-shipmate and a full-time High Street grocer.

Tom later teamed with Hollis Hamilton, also an independent grocer, and moved down High Street a couple doors from Carl’s to open Park and Shop. Years later, Tom and Hollis sold the business to Doug Brown and became associates at Doug’s Shop and Save. In 1966, they moved several more doors down High Street to a much larger Doug’s store. Later, Tom would move down High Street again, and managed what is now Hannaford. In total Tom was a grocer on High Street for nearly 40 years, worked with hundreds of people that would become life-long friends, and greeted thousands of customers with a smile and a “thank you for your business.”

He was also very giving to his community, serving as a deacon of the First Congregational Church, 50-year Mason, and as a Cub Scout Master.

After his retirement, Tom and Diane moved to a new home on Union River Bay, traveled around the world, enjoyed golf, entertained friends and lovingly hosted their family and grandchildren (and more recently, their first great-granddaughter and first great-grandson). He was an avid gardener and reader, and a fan of Boston sports teams and his beloved Notre Dame Fightin’ Irish.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his 10 siblings: Beatrice, Margaret, Helen, Mark Jr., George, Lucille, Ann, John, Jean and Richard. He was also pre-deceased by a son, Thomas Jr. of Thibodaux, La., and his in-laws, Francis and Florence Chase of Winter Harbor.

In addition to his wife, Diane, he is survived by his children and their families: daughter Christine and her husband Joe Beres of Milo and Cape Canaveral; daughter Emily of New Orleans and her children, Steven, Sebastian, Ethan and Morgan (and her son William); daughter-in-law Grace of Thibodaux, La. and her children, Chase, Chris and Dianne; son James and his wife, Shelia, of Sullivan; son Stanley and his partner Lise Desrocher of Trenton, his children, Jasmine (and her daughter Maya) and Thomas, and their mother Linda of San Francisco; and son Steven, his wife, Jennifer, and their daughter Raessler of Melrose, Mass. The large family he belonged to blessed him with many cousins, nieces and nephews, and particularly close friendships with his brother Dick’s family from Ellsworth and Diane’s family from Winter Harbor.

The family invites relatives and friends to celebrate his life. Visiting hours at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 31. Funeral services will be on Thursday, Sept. 1, at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be at Woodbine Cemetery. The family will host a celebration at 20 Raymond Way, Ellsworth, following a brief graveside service.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in his name be sent to Bangor Hospice, 42 Cedar St., Bangor, ME 04401, or Open Door Recovery Center, 8 Old Mill Road, Ellsworth, ME 04605.
