Barbara Smith Coan

Barbara went home to be with the Lord on Aug. 20 at age 94. She lived in Lincoln, Stonington, Ellsworth and Lamoine in the 1970s-1990s, and she loved Maine. She was predeceased by Edward Coan, her husband of 61 years. She is survived by sons Edward and Michael, daughters Annette, Susan and Alison (Coan) Dibble, their families and her brother James.

Barbara served in the U.S. Naval Reserve during World War II. She helped establish St. Brendan the Navigator Episcopal Church in Deer Isle, was a deacon in the Church of Our Father at Hulls Cove, and a chaplain at Eastern Maine Medical Center.

Barbara was a fine art painter with a bold, joyful style. Her faith, wit and generosity continue to inspire her family and friends. See https://barbaracoan.com, designed by her granddaughter Claire Dibble, for narrative and photos.
