Clik here to view.SURRY – Keith R. Heavrin Jr., 69, of Surry, died April 12, 2016, after an eight-month battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer.
Born Dec. 20, 1946, to Mary (Palkovich) and Keith R. Heavrin Sr., he was the eldest of his father’s nine children. He grew up in Youngstown, Ohio, graduated from Boardman (Ohio) High School in 1964, and attended Youngstown University before enlisting in the Navy Seabees, serving from 1966 to 1969, including two tours in Vietnam.
In 1972, he bought land in Harborside on Cape Rosier from Helen and Scott Nearing, where he built a homestead, worked as a carpenter and fine woodworker, and where his daughter and son were born.
Keith served as a planning board member and town constable for Brooksville in 1985, as Boy Scout Master for Brooksville in 1986 and for Blue Hill in 1992. He was a volunteer for the Maine Search and Rescue Dogs starting in 1995 and served as president from 1996 through 2002. An avid dancer, dance instructor and founding member of DownEast Dancers, in 2006 he moved to Toddy Pond in Surry, where he joined the Toddy Pond Association and continued his furniture-making in a new shop.
He is survived by his partner Donna Foster, daughter Rebecca of Seattle, son Dagan (wife Galen), and grandson Peter of San Francisco, three siblings, Cassandra Hamrick of Houston, Texas, Judith Kupec and Darryl Heavrin of Struthers, Ohio; four half-siblings, Tim Heavrin of Winslow, Ariz., Tammy Heavrin of Cherryfield, Tanya Snow of Sedgwick, and Teresa Limeburner of Brooksville. He is also remembered by his former spouses Jean Hay Bright and Chip Wadsworth.
A memorial celebration of his life will be held on May 29 at the Bay School, South Street, Blue Hill. Please bring a dish for a potluck meal at 5 p.m., followed by a dance with a live band at 7 p.m.
