ELLSWORTH AND GOULDSBORO
Barbara Bryce Herrington died peacefully on Monday, June 4, surrounded by her family. She was born on April 9, 1932, in South Portland, to Clara (Winnie) Davis and Charles Bryce.
Barb was predeceased by her loving husband, Charles (Ray) Herrington, originally from Oklahoma. Barb and Ray met in Oklahoma, where Barb was serving in the Air Force and Ray was attending university. They married on July 4, 1952, and returned to Maine in 1955.
Barb and Ray raised four sons in Orono. Barb was active in the Church of Universal Fellowship and the American Field Service. In 1976-1977, the family hosted a Chilean exchange student, Rene Bastias. He has become a part of the family and Barb referred to him as her fifth son.
The love and support for her sons was remarkable. She was the heart of the family. In tight times she kept the family organized, engaged and within budget. A great shopper and cook, Barb always served a delicious meal as the family sat down together at the kitchen table.
Barb was genuinely interested in the lives of friends and family — young and old would be seen through the picture window having coffee with Barb. This easy connection with people continued throughout her life. Her open, giving nature and warm smile endeared her in the hearts of many and those who met her will miss her.
Making puzzles, playing cards and working on crafts were activities Barb enjoyed with the companionship of others. She looked forward to her annual trips to Florida to visit family and lifelong best friend Lois Adams. Barb enjoyed the community of friends made at Friends in Action and Leonard Lake Senior Housing.
Barb was preceded in death by her brothers Charles (Chuck) Bryce of Massachusetts and Elliott Bryce of Maine.
Barb is survived by her sons Charles (Chuck) and his wife, Eileen, of New Hampshire; David and his wife, Denise Hue, of Maine; Donald of Maine; Mark and his wife, Lisa Tilden Herrington, of Maine; her AFS son Rene Bastias and his wife, Kristyn Bastias-Butler, of Connecticut; her sister Beverley Lunt and her husband, Richard, of Massachusetts; her sister-in-law Audrey Bryce of Massachusetts; her eight grandchildren (Dale, Jill, Henry, Phoebe, Dasha, Sofia, Elizabeth and Andres) and two great-grandchildren (Oliver and Piper).
Funeral services will be Sunday, June 17, 2018, at 1 p.m. at the Franklin United Methodist Church followed by a reception at the Franklin Veterans Club.
Condolences can be sent to Pyramid Studios, 10 State St., Ellsworth, ME 04605. The family suggests sending memorial contributions to Friends in Action, P.O. Box 1446, Ellsworth, ME 04605.
