Obit- Norma Cousins Smith_ELLSWORTH – Rev. Norma Cousins Smith, 82, passed away on Thursday, May 5, 2016, following a battle with cancer. She was born on March 22, 1934, in Northeast Harbor, the daughter of Elmer H. Cousins and Geraldine (Bradbury) Cousins.

Norma was a 1952 graduate of Mount Desert High School, and following studies at Boston University married Richard L. Smith of Southwest Harbor in 1954. After raising her family in Malvern, Pa., and Northeast Harbor, Norma completed her studies at the University of Maine and the Bangor Theological Seminary, from which she graduated in 1994.

Following her years of ministry with the Maine Sea Coast Mission, Norma retired to Ellsworth. She traveled to Rome and the Holy Land, and continued to be active with the Christian Fellowship Organization and the First Congregational Church of Ellsworth.

Her favorite hobby was creating and displaying miniatures; she was a member of the National Association of Miniature Enthusiasts, enjoyed the company of her fellow hobbyists, and traveled often to national miniature shows.

Norma is survived by her daughter Jeannie Dombrowski (Barry) of Brighton, Tenn.; and sons Timothy Smith (Laurel) of Arlington, Va.; Glenn (Hyun) of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and J. Lazarus Hawk (Sharon) of Memphis, Tenn.; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. In addition, she is survived by her sisters Yvonne, of Hamden; and Amy, of Old Orchard Beach, as well as brothers Don, of Southwest Harbor; Lee, of Lewiston; and Rae, of Portland. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brothers Allan and Lawrence.

Norma’s life will be celebrated at a May 12 memorial service at the First Congregational Church of Ellsworth, and a private interment will take place at the Forest Hills cemetery in Northeast Harbor. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made in her memory to the Maine Sea Coast Mission or to Hancock County Home Care and Hospice.
