BAR HARBOR
Milton Averill Hutchins, 92, died Aug. 4, 2017, at his home. He was born June 27, 1925, in Milbridge, the son of Roy G. and Lottie (West) Hutchins.
Milton was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during WWII in the Pacific Theater as a coxswain on LCT-1263. He was a member of the American Legion post and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Milton worked for many years for the State of Maine Highway Department, Harold MacQuinn Construction Inc. and Cianbro as a foreman and in other positions. Milton also worked a few years for and retired from Dragon Cement.
In his younger years, Milt enjoyed dances at local Granges and would walk many miles to work and visit friends.
He had many interests over the years, hunting, fishing, lobster fishing and tending his gardens, which he shared with friends and family. Milt loved the Red Sox and the Patriots.
Milt married his beloved wife, Daphne, in 1980. They were married 36 years until her passing in July 2016. They spent 25 winters in Florida and developed good friendships lasting to this day. He took up golfing when in Florida.
Milt was always personable and welcoming to anyone who stopped by and enjoyed company.
He would stop whatever he was doing to share a story and a laugh. He was a man of few words and as a friend said, “He said what he meant, and meant what he said.”
Milt braved white water rafting in his later 70s, lobster fished to age 87, conquered cancer at 89 and tended his gardens to age 91.
