BAR HARBOR — Barbara Janet Richardson, 84, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 18, 2017, in Bangor. She was born on Aug. 12, 1932, in Bloomfield, N.J., the daughter of Frederick G. and Dorothy (Mills) Hadley of Town Hill.

Barbara graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1949. As a child Barbara would spend summers in Town Hill. That is how she met Ralph M. Richardson, whom she would later marry on Dec. 15, 1951, after he had returned home from the Korean War. Ralph stayed in the Navy for 22 years and Barbara was a quintessential Navy wife, raising two children and seeing the world one Navy base at a time. During that time she also kept busy working various jobs, which included working three years as a Red Cross volunteer in Groton, Conn., running a nursery school of 80 students in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and being a Brownie troop leader as well as a Cub Scout leader.

After retiring from the Navy in 1969, Barb and Ralph came back to Maine, to their beloved camp in Trenton. In 1970, they built a house on the Oak Hill Road on MDI. Barb volunteered and conducted the Patient Care Volunteer Training Program for the MDI Hospital Auxiliary. She and Ralph owned and operated the Town Hill Country Store for a few years. She worked at Connors Emerson School from 1986 to 1995 as a teacher’s aide. She also worked at the Thompson Island Information Center for several years.

Barbara had many interests and was involved with many organizations on MDI, including the Book Club, the Literary Club and Ladies Aid, and she volunteered at the Somesville Library. Barbara had many friends who she socialized with and always looked forward to an evening with the Jersey Girls. Barbara loved family get-togethers, especially at camp, and socializing with friends. Barbara loved to travel and meet new people and she was fortunate to visit many wonderful places in the world.

She is survived by her son Steven H. Richardson and his wife, Ann Gibbs, of Vienna, Maine; her granddaughter Stephanie Fountaine and her husband, David A. Fountaine, of Bar Harbor; her grandson Sam G. Richardson of Salt Lake City, Utah, and her great-grandson Wyatt J. Fountaine. Barbara is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents, Barbara was predeceased by her husband, Ralph, and her daughter, Lynne F. Richardson.

A 1 p.m. funeral service will be held Saturday, May 6, 2017, at the Congregational Church of Bar Harbor. Arrangements by Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert.

Those who wish may donate in her memory to the Somesville Library, P.O. Box 280, Mount Desert, ME 04660 or The Bar Harbor Congregational Church, 29 Mt. Desert St., Bar Harbor, ME 04609.
