Sara S. Smith died unexpectedly at her home in Ellsworth on Oct. 5, 2022. Sara was born Dec. 18, 1942, in Miami, Fla., the daughter of Jack and Miriam (Morrison) Stine and sibling of William “Bill” and Robert “Bob” Stine. Sara spent her formative years in Miami, Fla., where she graduated from Miami High School and subsequently attended the Northwestern University School of Dentistry, where she received her diploma in dental hygiene in 1962.
Sara returned to Miami and began her career as a dental hygienist, where she met her husband, Elmer F. Smith III, through a mutual friend and a chance circumstance. Elmer was serving in the United States Army at Homestead Air Force Base when they met, and they were married in June of 1965. After Elmer separated from the Army and accepted a position with the United States Geological Survey, the couple moved to Silver Spring, Md., where they celebrated the births of their children, Tres Christopher, Geoffrey Scott and Courtney Rebecca.
Elmer’s work soon after took the family to Golden, Colo., for 12 years and then back to Reston, Va. Sara’s flexibility in working as dental hygienist supported the family’s moves. She later retired alongside her husband while living in Reston, Va., where the couple began their adventures in retirement.
Together, they built a vacation home in Duck, N.C. The devoted couple spent summers at their family property in Surry and spent winters in Duck, N.C., while enjoying their golden years of life. After 20 years in retirement, the couple decided to simplify and moved permanently to Ellsworth to be near their children and grandchildren.
Sara, a loving mother, is survived by her husband; her eldest son Tres C. Smith of Springfield, Va., and his four children, Westley, Gillian, Bennett and Everett; Geoff and his wife, Kelly, of Clifton and his son Parker; Courtney Weaver, her husband, Greg, and their three children, Tulas, Arden and Monte, of Surry.
The family will hold a private celebration of life in remembrance of Sara and are planning a memorial service at a later date.
Arrangements by Jordan-Fernald Funeral Homes, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth.
