Dede Paine, 82, died July 14, 2022, after a brief bout of cancer.
Dede Rose Jeffers was born on Sept. 22, 1939, in Bar Harbor. She was the first child of parents Doris “Dot” Smith of Otter Creek and Alder Blair Jeffers Jr. of Milbridge.
She attended Mount Desert Island High School and was elected to the student council. She also participated in drama, cheerleading, softball, basketball and yearbook and glee clubs. She earned a nursing degree at Waterville College of Nursing and worked as a nurse at Mount Desert Island Hospital and Humana Hospital (in Florida), where she ran her own endoscopy unit. Dede had an adventurous side and was particularly proud of her drag racing trophies won in Winterport.
Dede was a loving mother to her four children, Kimberly Ruth MacQuinn, Michelle Martha MacQuinn, Ronald Paul MacQuinn Jr. and Stacey Elizabeth Crowley. In 1990, Dede married her husband, David Bryant Paine, of Bar Harbor and retired from her nursing work in 2002. Dede adored children and relished her role as a grandmother. Her upbeat attitude and soft hugs were available to anyone who visited her home above Jordan’s Restaurant, where she was always ready to welcome visitors. She and her husband, David, spent winters in Jupiter, Fla., where they hosted family and visited friends. A few years back, she and David adopted a spirited coon cat, Jewel, who brought her endless amounts of joy. Dede overcame many health challenges over the years, but recently was diagnosed with advanced cancer. Her family was with her at her bedside in her final days. She was preceded by her father, mother, husband Ronald Paul MacQuinn Sr., daughter Kim Sargent and granddaughter Jessica Kane.
She is survived by her husband, David Paine, sister Connie Jeffers, daughters Michelle and Stacey, son Paul, niece Jennifer Jeffers Shulman, daughter-in-law Lacey Peterman MacQuinn, ex-husband Carl Crowley, sons-in-law Jerry Kane Jr., Luiz Gabetta and John Cuskelly, stepdaughters Kelly Gabetta and Carie Cuskelly, stepson Dean Paine, grandchildren Jennifer Sargent, Finn Teach, Hildie Bunker, Chelsey and Morgan Dawicki, Alexis Lily, Sierra Tapley, Mandy, Marlee and Matthew Cuskelly, Cleo and Quinn Paine, goddaughter Giselle Brown, great-grandchilden Sawyer Dunlop, Aspen Eisworth and Brailee Bunker, grandnieces Lucky, Ava and Gigi Shulman and many cousins and friends.
