Lawrence Mace, 85, of Amherst passed away Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at his home after a lengthy illness.
Born Nov. 28, 1936, in Portsmouth, N.H., Larry was the youngest son of Hanson and Marie (Hutchinson) Mace and grew up in Eliot. He was a student athlete at Eliot High School and Gorham State Teachers College, graduating in 1958.
Larry began his career in education teaching in Milford, Conn., and received his Masters of Education from the University of Bridgeport.
After marrying Pamela A. Raymond in 1962, the couple moved to Milford, where they resided until 1970, when they moved to Bangor. Larry enjoyed teaching woodshop at Old Town High School from 1970 until his retirement in 1991.
In 1972, the couple moved to Amherst, where they raised their three children. Larry purchased a tractor and began working the farm at the house, planting gardens, logging the land for firewood and keeping bees.
In his spare time Larry was an avid hunter and fisherman, often taking trips to Labrador, Alaska and other remote locations with his friends, relatives and former students who shared his passion for the outdoors. He had great times hunting with his nephew, Norm Clough.
In his later years, Larry looked forward to visits with his children and grandchildren. Together they enjoyed annual camping trips and time in Baxter State Park and Acadia. Larry loved playing cards and following sports teams like the Patriots, Red Sox and UMaine hockey. He also enjoyed spending time with his good friend Donnie Jordan, whether they were capturing bee swarms, working on projects or checking out the blueberry fields.
After receiving his cancer diagnosis, his family fulfilled his bucket list wishes by traveling to over a dozen national parks across the country from California to Florida. They are all very thankful for the memories.
Larry is survived by his wife, Pamela; his son Earle and his wife, Cindy; his son David and his partner Ruth; his daughter Jennifer and her husband, Claudio Scremin; his five grandsons Ian, Andrew and Seth Mace and Matthew and Jacob Scremin; and his sister Mary Main and her partner Rod Vaillancourt. He was predeceased by his brother Earle and sisters Blanche Clark, Polly Bowden and Barbara Clough.
At his request, there will be a private family celebration of his life.
