Hattie E. Piper

Blue Hill

Hattie E. Piper, 97, peacefully passed away at Northern Light Blue Hill Hospital April 23, 2022, with her daughters and granddaughter at her bedside. She was born in Blue Hill, April 15, 1925, the daughter of Ernest E. and L. May (Robertson) Nevells.

Hattie attended schools in Blue Hill, graduating from George Stevens Academy in 1943. She traveled to Beverly, Mass., where she lived with her sister, Nellie, and worked at the Beverly High School. While in Beverly, she married her life partner, Kendrick S. Piper, in 1943. She traveled with her husband for a few years, residing at military bases. They returned to Blue Hill and moved into Hattie’s grandparents’ house and raised their family.

Hattie attended the First Baptist Church in Blue Hill and was a member of Harborview Ladies Club. She enjoyed embroidery and other needle crafts. She also liked being outdoors watching for robins and her gardens. She will be missed, especially for her homemade fudge.

She is survived by her daughters, Chris Lamb of Brooksville and Nancy Bates and husband, Donnie, of Blue Hill; grandchildren, Wendy Dow and husband, CJ, of Brooksville, Mathieu Leach of Bethel, Dawn Bates-Nason and husband, Rick, of Blue Hill; great-grandchildren, Bode, Evan Leach of Bethel, Zack Dow of Brooksville, Dylan Nason and partner Deanna of Penobscot and Blake Nason of Blue Hill; brother-in-law, Thomas Piper of Clermont, Fla.; sister-in-law, Gail O’gilvie of Kittery; nephews, Virgil Wood of Millinocket, Edwin Wood of Connecticut and Peter and wife, Judy Nevells, of Eastbrook; nieces, Elaine Wardwell of Windsor and Sherri Nevells of Eastbrook; other family members, Carol and her children and Kelsey and her children; and many other nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Kendrick S. Piper; sisters, Nellie, and Eleanor Wood; brothers, Phillip, Paul and Aaron Nevells; and sons-in-law, Kerry Leach and James Lamb.

A memorial service will be held May 14, 2022, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, Blue Hill. Kendrick and Hattie will be laid to rest at a private service in Mountainview Cemetery, Blue Hill.
