Dr. Augusta Foster Law, who spent her childhood in Ellsworth, died after a short illness at the RiverMead Retirement Community in Peterborough, N.H. She was 98.

Born in Sargentville on Oct. 19, 1922, to Mildred (Sargent) Foster and Charles K. Foster I, she attended Ellsworth High School, the University of Maine at Orono, Tufts Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health. Augusta and her husband, Dr. Alexandre G. Law, settled in Milford, N.H., in 1954.

A remarkable trailblazer in the medical field, her long career in public health included positions at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, the Harvard School of Public Health and the New Hampshire Division of Public Services. In addition to her work in public health, she assisted her husband and other area physicians in general practice.

Dr. Law was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and her beloved brother, Charles “Pat” Foster II, of Ellsworth.

Dr. Law is survived by her son and three daughters: Ian Law (Wanda) of San Diego, Calif.; Marjorie Law (Joe) of Crawfordville, Fla.; Susan Fleisher (Adam) of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; and Aimee Heru (Michael) of East Greenwich, R.I. In addition to her four children, Augusta is survived by seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Gus deeply appreciated her friends, both old and new. She loved being a doctor, piercing ears, hiking, riding her mountain bike, driving and swimming.

Her family would like to thank the RiverMead staff for their most attentive care of Gus in her final days.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association or Souhegan Home and Hospice Care in Milford, N.H.
