Susan Helene Gensemer

Susan Helene Gensemer, 68, died Nov. 10, 2021, at her home. She was born in Savannah, Ga., May 20, 1953, the daughter of George John and Alice (Barinowski) Gensemer.

Susan graduated summa cum laude from Capital University 1975 with a BA in mathematics. She received her master’s in economics 1978 and Ph.D. in 1984, both from Purdue University and in economics. She was a graduate and undergraduate economics professor at Syracuse University for 30 years.

Susan was a world traveler, an avid gardener and a renowned economist. She took the torch from early feminist economists such as Virginia Perry and published many works related to women’s rights in the workplace, economics and gender. She loved Maine, boating with John on the ocean and sharing pictures and stories with friends of her granddaughter, Ava.

She was a member of the American Economic Association, Econometric Society, Society for the promotion of Economic Theory, Mathematical Association of America, St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Ellsworth and the Franklin Veterans Club.

She is survived by her life partner, John Popka of Sorrento; son, Jake Popka, and his wife, Sasha; granddaughter, Ava Popka, all of Syracuse, N.Y.; brother, John Gensemer, and sister, Gretchen Banks, both of Ohio. She was predeceased by her parents and brother, Mark Gensemer.

A celebration of life will be held in the spring with date to be announced later.
