John Rockwood Somes, 77, of Surry died peacefully March 11, 2021, after a brief illness. John was born and raised in Somesville, the youngest son of Chauncey D. and Ethel L. Somes and grandson of Harry and Eva Somes, both of Oak Hill Road.

After leaving MDI, he graduated from Higgins Classical Institute in 1961, finding the “greener pastures” he was asked to find. John joined the U.S. Army, where he was stationed in Germany, was graduated from Airborne School and attained a crypto security clearance, which inserted him into events surrounding the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962.

John returned to MDI, began working for Bobby Ray, married and began a family before leaving home for the next 38 years. He went on to build a hospital for the King in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and several skyscrapers in Houston, Texas. John built in Hartford, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Montego Bay and South Beach, among many other locations. In later years, John remained proud of his history with the Masons and was an active member of the Ellsworth First Baptist Church.

He is survived by his children, Adam, Ellen and Laura Somes and finally, Giovanni. He also has nine wonderful grandchildren.

A graveside service is planned at Brookside Cemetery later this spring.

Arrangements by Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth.
