Limestone
Steven Nelson Herrick passed away Dec. 11, 2020, after a valiant and hard-fought battle with multiple myeloma. Steven courageously lived five and a half years after his diagnosis with the help of medical staff at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, the Lafayette Family Cancer Institute and the AR Gould Hospital in Presque Isle. The family are very grateful to all and especially the staff at the Aroostook House of Comfort who watched over him in his last days.
Steven was born March 25, 1956, at San Diego Naval Hospital, the middle son of Thelma Dean and William Nelson Herrick. After several years in Southern California, the family moved to Florida, where they lived until 1972, when they returned to the family home of Tremont. Steven met his future wife, Marion “Jay” Carter, in high school, and they married in 1985 and made Tremont their home.
Steven had excellent mechanical abilities and learned electrical work while employed at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Fla., while he was still a teenager. In Maine, Steven joined the Youth Conservation Corps, building trails at Baxter State Park and Camden Hills State Park. He worked for numerous construction companies for many years before joining Walmart as an associate, where for more than 20 years he was the primary person assembling bicycles, furniture and equipment and became known as Mr. Fixit.
Steven was known for his strength and was an all-state wrestler who also enjoyed football. As a youth, Steven often protected other students from bullying; he looked out for others and was always willing to help. He put his strength to work as a young man when he rescued a Bangor Hydro lineman who had been electrocuted and left dangling from a wire. At his own risk, Steven climbed a ladder and carried the man to safety, saving him from a serious fall.
Along the way, Steven pursued many interests, including making beautiful handmade wooden birdhouses. He enjoyed working in his shop and had excellent mechanical abilities, fixing bicycles and cars. He was a man of many talents; he even made beautiful quilts.
In his later years, Steven and Jay enjoyed living in Bucksport, and finally in Limestone, where they moved to be nearer to extended family. He is survived by his wife, Jay, and her daughter Jenny (Greg), whom he considered as his own; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his brothers, William of Bar Harbor and David (Aimee) of Franklin, along with numerous cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Thelma.
