Rosemary T. Sargent, 96, born June 15, 1924, started her life’s journey at an orphanage in Pennsylvania and ended it Nov. 25, 2020, at her home in Ellsworth
peacefully with family by her side.
Rosemary graduated from J.W. Hallahan Catholic Girls School. She served eight years in the U.S. Navy, where she met her husband, Edward “Bill” Sargent, and had 70 years of adventure with him.
During her Navy career from 1944-1952, she worked at the Pentagon as a secretary for a scientist who was working on special weapons for atomic bomb testing in the Bikini Islands. While stationed in London as a secretary for the captain in charge of the 6th Fleet, she and Bill were married in 1951, and in 1952 returned to Ellsworth, where they raised their family.
Because of her strong Catholic faith, she spent her life involved at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Ellsworth, where for 10 years she taught Sunday school preparing children to receive First Communion. For seven years she and Bill spent six months volunteering at a Franciscan mission in Guaymas, Mexico, and one winter at a Navajo reservation in New Mexico. She also volunteered at Collier’s Nursing Home for 35 years.
She enjoyed sailing the Maine coast on their boat the Double Eagle. She loved spending time with her many friends and family.
Rosemary is survived by her husband, Edward “Bill” R. Sargent, of Ellsworth; her daughters, Michelle Sargent of Tequesta, Fla., Nora Garland and husband, Bob, of Fletchers Landing and Maryellen Lozano and Augie of Bar Harbor; two sons, Gregory Sargent and Robert Sargent, both of Fletchers Landing; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was predeceased by her daughter Rebecca Sargent and her brother Paul Porter. The family would like to thank Kindred Hospice for their care.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2020, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 231 Main St., Ellsworth, with Father Emile Dube as celebrant.
